    Amazing! It is wonderful to see that the old antique use of doing mosaic is still being taught and not lost, so further generations can learn it also to be around for centuries to come.

    Such a clear and heartfelt account of the technique you've shared with SO many grateful students. As you demonstrate, it's still possible, with skill and devotion, to continue this extraordinary method (even adding some modern refinements) to create beautiful and enduring works, such as this. Mille grazie, Luciana!

    Where can I get the pumice stone you used at the end to smooth the mosaic? Is it the same kind of pumice used at a nail salon for pedicures or is it a different grade of pumice??

    • @MosaicSchool
      @MosaicSchool  6 лет назад

      You can find the pomice stones at the retail buildings or shops that have products for construction and restauration for the house. You can also use the pomice stones that are used for nails. There are different types od pomice stones that are cheaper and stronger.

      The lime for mosaics or fresco painting is called "grassello", and it is one tho most ancient binder in history. It belongs to the category of the air-drying binders.
      The process to obtain it starts from achieving the right kind of stone which has to be a limestone at least 94/96% calcium carbonate (CaCO3), it means it has to be almost pure CaCO3.
      Then it needs to be fragmented or crushed into smaller pieces or finer powder... put it in a kiln and let it get the temperature of 800°/900° until it calcinates.
      The powder after the process in the kiln is very unstable (CaO . Calcium Oxide) ) and it needs to be stabilized thorughout the process of Hydratation.
      The hydratation process is generally done by using water vapour at given temperature to obtain the hydrated lime (CaOH2 - bi-Hydrated Calcium). This kind of lime could be sold in powder, in bags or buckets, or be processed again by adding more water and let it "seasoned" for at least 3 months in a big collection tank until it reaches the creamy consistency we are used to. The thicker is the consistency required, the more time the lime needs to et in the tank.
      When the hydrated lime is mixed with water to make a cream, then it gets the name of "grassello". But this name also depends of the rate of the quantity obtained out of the kiln once the CaO is hydrated: the closer is the final product in quantity to the starting material, the higher is the quality of the lime grassello.
      To prepare the lime putty, the lime needs to be taken out of the tank and placed onto a support to let the access of the water to evaporate and leave the lime in the (right) consistency to be smeard on the support used to make the mosaic on, in a desired/needed thickness.
      Keep the grassello lime moisted and coverd by a plastic sheet until the mosaic is finished.

    Α όχι είναι πολύ δύσκολο, προτιμώ αυτό που κάνω εγώ, την αντίστροφη ψηφοθέτηση. Κολάω βαμβακερό ύφασμα σε ξύλινη επιφάνεια, απλώνω αλευρόκολα και όταν στεγνώση ζωγραφίζω το σχέδιο. Μετά κολλάω τις ψηφίδες Ορσόνι με αλευρόκολα. Όταν τελειώσω απλώνω το κονίαμα.

      Γεια σου Ήριννα,
      Σ' ευχαριστούμε για το σχόλιό σου! Πράγματι, υπάρχουν διάφορες μέθοδοι για τη δημιουργία ενός μωσαϊκού: άμεση μέθοδος σε προσωρινό ή μόνιμο δεσμευτικό υλικό, άμεση μέθοδος σε κόλλα, έμμεση μέθοδος σε χαρτί, σε καμβά κλπ. Τις γνωρίζουμε και τις χρησιμοποιούμε όλες ανάλογα με τη δυσκολία, το μέγεθος, τη θέση και τη χρήση του μωσαϊκού. Κυρίως όμως, επιλέγουμε ανάλογα με τον τύπο της επιφάνειας που θέλουμε να πετύχουμε: επίπεδη, τραχιά, δισδιάστατη, λειαντική κ.α. Στην πράξη, δεν υπάρχει καλύτερη μέθοδος από την άλλη, η επιλογή εξαρτάται από τη λειτουργία που πρέπει να έχει το μωσαϊκό.

    What is the use of the clay stage? Couldn’t you just stick the stones to a paper with the design, then just turn it over onto the cement?

    • @MosaicSchool
      @MosaicSchool  Год назад +2

      Working directly on the final mosaic, involves the use of a quick cement mortar, which hardens in a few hours, sometimes minutes.
      Such a method exists and is called "Direct Technique". The Direct Technique is very fast but has a major disadvantage: it does not allow for minor corrections to the parts created a few days earlier. This often happens with mosaics consisting of thousands of tiles.
      Therefore, the Direct Technique is not recommended in the case of relatively large and complex mosaics.
      The method you saw in the video is called "Ravenna Technique" or "Direct Technique with a Temporary Binder"
      It was developed by Ravenna-based mosaicists inspired by the historical method of making mosaics. Lime/clay was used as a temporary binder due to its long drying time. It can, in fact, stay workable for months if covered and sprayed with water. However, lime is not kept as a permanent binder since, once it has set, it tends to crack. To be used as a permanent binder, lime should be prepared exactly as it was historically and it should have the same base preparation.
      For further study of mosaic techniques, we recommend:
      "The Modern Mosaic Handbook" by Luciana Notturni.
      The book is purchasable at this link:

      @@MosaicSchool I understand now the purpose of a bed that stays soft for a long time, thanks a lot for explaining. Also, your method allows uneven angles and surface level for each stone, while on a paper they will be all leveled - probably good for floor mosaics.,,

    Assolutamente favolosi, tutti e due! Mi piacerebbe saper dove si trova il mosaico che il signor Foscolo Cucco ha donato al NYFD perché ho cercato sull'internet ma non ho potuto trovare niente di certo. Andremo a NYC la settimana prossima e ci piacerebbe un sacco vedere la santa dal vivo!

    Beautiful art work but dang that's a long process, why not just put the adhesive glue on your platform, then grout it, then polish it and be done seems more simpler?

    • @MosaicSchool
      @MosaicSchool  4 года назад

      If you lay down the tiles on a flat surface, using adhesive glue or similar, you cannot precisely adjust the depth of each piece, as it happens by using a layer of lime or clay. The choice is necessary when you use irregular tiles (typically in smalti or marble), cut by hand. Different depth of pieces allows to create light effects due to the reflection, especially for glassy materials.
      It is exactly the same technique used in ancient times. For more information, please feel free to contact us:
