BL stands for boys' love, and, as far as I understand, the genre is not even supposed to be too explicit about the homosexual nature of the characters' relationship. For years BL dramas evaded censorship by telling the stories that could be viewed as intimate friendship between the two male leads if you had an innocent mind. Unfortunately, someone in Chinese government stumbled on AO3 and discovered just how innocent the minds of BL fans were, thus the ban.😅
