  • This is the second seminar in my Dialectics of God course. Here I explore the Radical Theologian in William Hamilton's categories of Detective, Assassin and Artist. We look at what it might mean for God to die in a cosmic sense, and touch on the connection between Altizer's work and pyrotheology.

Thank you Peter for throwing me headfirst back into Hegel’s Phenomenology! I read the prologue last week and was blown away by how much is in there, how densely it is packed, and how much I either missed or just didn’t understand when I studied it in university. And that last sentence is 40 to 150 words short of a Hegelian one.

okay, so i'm a Black trans student (undergraduate senior at Howard University). started my scholarship with an interest in gender non-conformity (intentional deviance) in the diaspora and drug use/policy as it relates to the state's neocolonial control over Black bodies...so that led me to anti-work and Freud, of course. so i'm being swiftly radicalized and all this shit is happening (my evolving non-normative gender, politics, relationships, TRAUMA). and soon i get fucking burnt out. it becomes too much for my spirit (mass incarceration, Black and brown house-insecurity, transphobia, white supremacy, etc etc etc).
i get into nihilism real heavily (as one does). realized (sorry this story is so meandering but I don't have time to break it all down) that this is, as you say, "fools gold" and morally irresponsible. like will my existentialism get Black people out of prison or stop Black trans women from being murdered? YES, but my thinking that life is meaningless and that because of this I should be passive bystander in it will definitely not stop Black trans women from being murdered.
so this leads me to like a spiritual awakening (emergence strategy, herbalism, healing-centered justice, ancestral work, etc). And this was all great! But then-May of 2019 happens. In short: the love of my life (at the time) left me and I died, basically. Like on the coattails of what I thought was a spiritual high in life, all this fucking internal work, the universe repays me by literally killing my entire world (at the time) and sense of self/purpose."I lost my life to find it."
anywho, now I am knee-deep in radical theology and finding your work (after encountering all this knowledge: BDSM theory, Yoruba spiritual systems, prison abolition, healing-centered engagement, somatics work, fucking so much shit dude) is like everything to me. finding your work in the midst of a deep depression and desire to die is everything to me. i feel as if i've been lead to this point. (not to mention that i was a practicing Christian for four years and absolutely believed i was going to hell for being gay...and now i am here).
like i'm being written or something is writing thru me as u also said and i can't even explain it. but this video itself honestly is saving my life in the midst of just hating this fucking world. yeah, god is dead? so what am I going to do about it?
p.s. anywho that was a lot but if u ever see this and want to kiki (gay slang for communing and exchanging energy/knowledge) via fucking email or facebook or any forum, even if for only 2 minutes, it would make my life probably. here's my email: brookeloward@gmail.com
p.s.s i am actually competent (altho i try not to base my value solely in Western ways of knowing) and can write coherently without the use of parenthesis, im just too excited and high as fuck.
    p.s.s. respect brotha

Peter, on the issue of Kenosis have you taken into consideration the libation offering language in the text and the structure of the text (Philippians 2)? I can't explain it all here, but I propose that "auton ekenosin" (emptied Himself) refers to the imagery of the libation offering (Exodus 29: 41) which Paul uses to refer to himself in his following of Christ "But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice..." (v. Philippians 2: 17). For Christ the emptying culminates in his death on the cross (Philippians 2: 8). Paul then goes on to use the imagery again in chapter 4 in reference to the sacrifices of the church where he quotes the libation offering in Exodus, "They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God..." (Philippians 4: 18; Exodus 29: 41). I can't go into it here, but there is also a chiastic structure to the text which lends itself to this interpretation. So, far from any notion of God divesting Himself of anything or Christ ceasing to be God in His incarnation, the kenosis is referring to the emptying of a libation offering in the incarnation and death of Christ.
