@@hemming57 I read an interview with him some years back where he mentioned that he struggled getting roles, kind of typecast, folks not really knowing how or what to cast him in. He saw Mad Men as a comeback of sorts.
Kathryn 'Kay' Reynolds in the middle as 'Miss Smith aka Smitty'. She was pushing 40 when they filmed this and looked good even next to 25 year old Michelle Lee!
You make it sound like "pushing 40" is over the hill and a long ways off from 25 when really it's only 15yrs. It's not like Kay was pushing 50 or 60. lol
I searched her up, apparently she was born in 1951 and this movie came out in 1967. She wasn’t pushing 40, she would have been...a teenager at the time. Unless if her birthdate as shown on google is incorrect...she would have been quite young at the time then.
@@apfenn7777 I love this - thank you! She was such a fantastic person all around, and she did indeed have a wonderful life. And it's funny that you have 7's in your user name, because my mom's birthday was 07/07. 😺
I concur. Your mom didn’t have a huge role in this film but she stands out for her beauty and talent and she created one of the most memorable characters with her rendition of “Smitty.”
@@HeidisHereAndThere Haha I know Mad Men came out later. He was just trying to describe what the movie was like to me since he knew I had seen Mad Men, but I hadn't seen this movie.
But Morse himself said working on both How to Succeed and Mad Men felt like a bit of a time warp. He joked that he was the only one on Mad Men who LIVED through the times they were filming.
@@lauramalek3128 That is a highly interesting observation on his part and I didn't learn of that until just now. The Source himself; his credibility is unimpeachable.
My school just did the stage production of this(today was our final show) and I got to be a part of the tech crew! This was phenomenal and I can’t wait to watch the movie!
If it had come out only 5 years before it probably would have fared better...only a handful of musicals at this time were embraced; times had changed, unfortunately...
It made $6.3 million. Not sure of the budget. Nowhere near the success of the play (which was hugely successful and won a Pulitzer and many Tonys), but as many have pointed out, the climate changed a lot from the early 1960s to when the film was released in 1967.
If the film version had kept all the songs from the original show and the dances, that made it a smash hit - it might have had a chance - but they dropped them. It flopped because everyone who had loved the show were mightily disappointed in the film. They didn't actually make a film of it, they just put the camera in front of the actors and hoped for the best. It was screaming out for a director who knew what to do with stage material, but they didn't have one, sadly, and it bombed.
Y'all have to see 'The Loved One', with Robert Morse, Jonathan Winters, Liberace, Rod Steiger, Paul Williams, and Milton Berle. It will bend your brain. You're welcome.
When I first heard this song not to long ago I kinda thought it was annoying and sounded a bit off fast forward and I literally can't stop singing the chorus lol
Pity the film dropped half of the original songs and dances. Robert Morse still shines, and the song is cute, but I always thought Michelle Lee looked as though she could eat Ponty for lunch.
This is literally such a good scene, brilliant in every way
Young singers, learn this song.
RIP, Robert Morse (1931-2022)
Underrated as a versatile comedy actor
Right? I was always a huge fan, from his short sitcom in '68 on, but serious talent in every pore.
Not underrated, he won many awards and was a highly regarded actor.
@@hemming57 I read an interview with him some years back where he mentioned that he struggled getting roles, kind of typecast, folks not really knowing how or what to cast him in. He saw Mad Men as a comeback of sorts.
And to think Robert Morse would end up being in Mad Men. Perfect.
@T.S. T. Miss him? He's still alive.
maybe that's exactly why they cast him as Bert!
lots of nostalgic flashbacks for him I imagine.
Ironic, isn't it?
@@realar In our hearts anyway.
RIP Ponty. I have been a fan of his for decades and since hearing the news of his passing today....NEEDED a Ponty fix. 💕💕💕💔💔💔

@@berrisfueller6221 According to IMDb, she was born 10/6/27 so she probably would've been about 38 or 39 during filming.
Kay Reynolds really puts her back into this scene. "To make a bargain, make a date!" 2:29 is my favorite moment from this great film.
She also played Professor Swanson on an episode of I Dream of Jeannie and was great in it.
@@lisajanebrooklyn Thank you. I will look for that!
That's my beautiful mom, Kathryn Reynolds, who played Smitty!
Your mom was so beautiful. I had a crush on here ever since I saw this movie so many years ago. I hope that she had a wonderful life.

My favorite song from a movie filled with wonderful tunes. This really is a brilliant, happy movie!
This was a great movie, and this is one of the best songs from it!
You mean one of the few songs left in the film version, right?
@@jochenstossberg5427 I'm afraid I never saw the theatrical version. Did it have more songs?
@Greg Elchert Interesting! I guess I still need to see it performed on stage then!
My dad told me this was like a humorous, musical version of Mad men. Reading this comment section, I see he was right.
No, this had nothing to do with this "Mad Men" you speak about. LOL This came out in 1967!!

i love michele lee in Seesaw!! one of my favorite musicals
My fave movie
R.I.P. Union Carbide Building.
There's a reason the musical died in the Sixties.
It was the last GREAT decade in America (so far).
Smithy is actually my crush ❤
Still humm this after a long day!

The actress in the green dress ("Smitty") seems to have vanished after this film... not sure why, she seems to be very talented.
Apparently in the original Broadway production, Smitty had only four musical numbers and her last one was the Second Act opener.

one of shelly longs first roles,,,she could act and sing great as well
Not Shelley, that’s Kathryn Reynolds but I agree with you the resemblance is striking here.
That was...cute as hell!

The great Karen Fairgate MacKenzie aka Michele Lee
I would have cast Jerry Lewis and Janet Leigh to ensure a healthy box-office.
Why not Kirk Douglas and Agnes Moorhead? That would have worked, totally.
