The “300” rule is an excellent one too Brody (although I go 250 depending on the instruments I use). Anything that’s NOT bass kick or 808 goes above 300Hz (250Hz on some snares for phatness and some 808 harmonics).

I don’t do hip hop music most of the time myself (I’m currently doing an industrial music/EBM project) but the principles are the same and I am going to keep this methodology in mind when I sit down to do remixes this weekend. Peace.

Thank you so much brother! Subbed for sure and saved this vid to my music files for later reference!

@@JamaalAbiade its more people in my college and stuff bro. I have seen a couple of tutorials saying that but the idea is you use a gain plugin (eg utility in Ableton) to set ur levels as well as keep the integrity of the sound then after you have gainstaged everything you then use the faders cause it ensures that no individual track is distorted or clipping whereas if you use the faders on a signal that may not be totally clean then you could be turning down an already distorted sound or even on a smaller level if you know its not distorting it makes each individual sound just a tad cleaner but as they say It really is each to their own and ur a much better producer than I am so who knows.

I had some confusion understanding this concept. I would watch a tutorial saying something about using the gain plugin or the gain in the inspector, over using the faders, whereas others said theres no difference. These kind of things really slow down progress right? What I do now is use the gain plugin/option when in the initial producing stage to make sure nothing is clipping coming in. That said, I rarely need to do this if I select good sounding instruments. It's normally for like live recorded samples and such, or plugins that are really loud like some synths. And then i normally just use the volume on the plugin if it has one before even looking at it in the DAW. I'm guessing once you have balanced the volumes correctly initially, then there's no need to fix it further with gain. Another time to use gain plugins over faders, is maybe when someone else sends over stems and they haven't sorted the volumes before hand. I'm totally going of personal experience and what I have gathered while trying to learn. I can produce quite well now, but I'm still trying to learn the mixing and mastering side of things. Hope this helps bro, keep on keeping on!
