      This explain the sinking of the MS Sea Diamond in 2007, the sinking of the MS Express Samina in 2000, the sinking of the SS Heraklion in 1966, the sinking of the SS Heimara in 1947, the sinking of the Chrissi Avgi in 1983, the sinking of the MTS Oceanos in 1991. All Greek operated ships. All in peace time. Yes, the best in the world indeed.

      @@jamesshunt5123 It´s simple statistics... you mentioned 6 bad accidents in what, 70 years? I mean yes, it shouldn't have happened at all but with the ridiculous amount of travel, and bad weather the Aegean sees every year it could have been much, much worse. Have you ever travelled in any of those routes at all? Even in good weather? It isn't that simple. I once found myself in a 150-people capacity boat south of Crete in a sudden wind storm, nearly 10 Beaufort, the only reason we were ok is the captain. It may be national pride for that guy, but for me it was first-hand experience of how skilled even small boat operators are. Yes, people are stupid and greedy and all that, also accidents do happen. But that shouldn't take away from the fact they are for the most part extremely skilled and renowned for it. One fact does not negate the other. (There are worse things after all, imagine being the fool of a captain of Costa Concordia, though the idion in Samina wasn't far behind..)

    Interesting vid... Imagine Washington State ferries in seas like that. No, they generally park them at that point. Something about having vehicles sluiced off the deck. They're open at both ends, like the Staten Island ferries in N.Y. And yes, the Puget Sound can get that rough at times. Great fun when it does.

    • @johnkruton9708
      @johnkruton9708 4 года назад +1

      Leonard Hopper :yes, but we have multiple sets of large bumper and fixed pilings to assist holding the ferries in place with mooring and engines...as they also are moored overnight at various docks/landings.

    • @leonardhopper857

      @@johnkruton9708 Sounds to me like you have been on a ride or two on the ferry system here. Ever been on the Pt. Townsend - Coupeville run or on the any of the runs from Anacortes out to the San Juan Islands? Get a good swell coming down the Strait with a strong wind out of the north and things can get a bit rough. Have sat in my truck on more than one occasion and watched waves break over the bow and wash down the main deck deep enough to move vehicles. It is enough to make you be thankful to be back on sodden ground again after a ride like that.

    • @johnkruton9708
      @johnkruton9708 4 года назад +2

      @ Leonard Hopper ; yes the same experiences you’ve encountered. As much grief the WSF system gets we don’t have THIS hell raising experience to go through

    • @leonardhopper857
      @leonardhopper857 Год назад

      Yeppers, been on both runs making deliveries. A good wind and a good swell coming in from the strait does make for a 'fun' ride. Have actually talked to the deck crew on whether or not to chain down my delivery truck so that it didn't get pushed back into the vehicles behind me. Actually had to do just that a couple of times on the Pt. Townsend - Keystone run heading towards Pt. Townsend. Was at the very front both times. Yep, when the 'slosh' across the deck is enough to move a fully loaded 23,500 G.V.W. rated truck, you know you are in for a bit of excitement.

    They need more breakwaters. I admire the skills of the skippers though, docking within a few minutes in horrible sea state conditions like that.

    • @buss8009
      @buss8009 3 года назад

      No breakwaters is a no no in Norway with "these types" of ferries... or they will at least have the dock along the whole length of the ship. And people don't share the ramp at the same time. Usually, those who are walking, have their own separate gangway.

I could almost envision the captain vaulting onto the quay and giving a little bow. What is Greek for ta-da?

      Stick to the original. The remake is just another example of "If ain't broke don't fix it." and Hollywood's quick cash-grab formula of re-hashing an old Oscar winning (2 wins and another 5 nominations) film because they're literally out of original ideas. Don't believe me? Then why don't you compare the Imdb score for both films. The people have spoken. So did the critics. And the movie going audience.
      Alas if Hollywood knows your kind is more than willing to watch pointless remakes then they'll happily milk you dry.

    Unsafe mooring at 8:00 in my opinion, not only because those two crew members are at risk, if one of them falls overboard for any reason he's in big troubles behind those jet engines, plus that line can still break pulling right in the middle of the passengers getting off, I've seen bigger lines breaking so easily I could not believe that.

    I'm baffled as to why Scottish ferry Cal Mac cancels sailings when the wind is even less than this! Too much health and safety guff goes on in the UK.

    Why is everyone going on about the craftsmanship of the captains?
    It just shows their stupidity. They risk the lives of hundreds of passengers for no good reason.
    In rough weather the ferries need to be cancelled. But in Greece money goes before safety.

      They are the only connection to the mainland, a lot of the times they are the only way to get food and medicine on the island. Most of these islands don't have airports because they are too small, plus the weather is too bad to fly safely. Especially in winter months this becomes a huge problem. What do you want them to do, die? Sometimes they just can't wait for the weather to get better.
      In summer months there are thousands of people stuck on islands, if they cancel the ferries, what are those people supposed to do? I have travelled in 9 Beaufor weather, it was bad and a bit scary but those ships are huge and most of the ports have some sort of wind buff, it isn't as dangerous as it looks. They do this hundreds of times a year, luckily incidents are minor and very few. When was the last time you heard of an accident? They are more common in transport ships, but these don't carry any civilians.

      @@antinimel People live on islands that experience far worse conditions, e.g. in Scotland, Scandinavia or Finland. They stock up for the winter. They are prepared. There's nothing stopping the Greek from adopting the same attitude.

      Hi there, the cyclades which include Naxos suffer from a weather phenomenon called the meltemi wind. It happens in the summer months from about June to September. It comes from the north[i believe it originates in the north off India,Pakistan]. The wind blows up to force 8,perhaps more. The wind can last for a couple hours,a few days perhaps a week.! Hope this bit of info helps.

      @@colango98 Everything you said is correct except the fact that meltemi is a phenomenon that is created in Azores islands. Every weather phenomenon in Greece is originated from high or low pressure systems created over Azores because all those pressure travel from west to east
