First saw VWB at the huge Sunday Break show in Austin, the summer of '76. I was so far from the stage I couldn't really see much but that rocking guitar sound really impressed me. Van has some tricks but isn't overly flashy. Blues rock for the common man, full of energy and emotion. Glad you're still rocking it!
How is it that I've never heard of Mr. Wilks? Someone on my Johnny Winter group posted pic of a show with Van Wilks and Johnny Winter in 1980 so I look him and he's really good.
Great show... brings back memories growing up in Dallas in the 80s... you got me interested in the PRS... to pick that over a box of Les Pauls says allot!
I just learned about Van Wilks from a Guitar Player letter to the editor..It stated that Brian May probably got his idea of fingerboard tapping from seeing Van Wilks way back when. So I had to check him out and I must say I like what I hear alot. Keep on grooving in the free world.
Heck of picker. I first became aware of Van Wilks when I saw him open for Point Blank, and later caught him several more times when he opened for Jay Boy Adams, The Outlaws, and Johnny Winter...all at McFarlan Auditorium in Dallas. I believe played The Binary Star in Dallas and Savvy's in Fort Worth as well. We're talking about the mid-to-late late '70"s...and he was doing fret-tapping, sweep-picking, hammer-ons, pull-offs, whammy-bar dive-bombs WAY before EVH and modern shredders. Always put on a show.
Three great guys making a joyful noise!
Thank you for watching!
