I just discovered you guys & love this! This is just what I needed to practice listening & comprehension skills. I listen to the podcast every night. I think it's funny you are English & Spanish. I'm from Boston (EU) & studied in Mexico 20 years ago. I had a friend come from Barcelona & we couldn't understand each other's accents! lol. Boston is known for funny accents too. Feliz ano nuevo y gracias para tu trabajo. My apreciado!

Hola! I have a question about a sentence construction. I began reading Harry Potter y La Piedra Filosofal, which like most stories, uses the past tenses to move the narrative along. However, in the midst of one paragraph, there is a construction that reads "como si considerara...." and one a few sentences later that reads "como si esperara...." In my mind, I translated each like this "as if considering..." and "as if hoping..." but I am confused by the use of the future tense. Plus neither verb had an accent mark on the last letter. Can you explain this construction? Thanks!
Hi Jeremy, the tense being used here is the Pretérito imperfecto of the subjunctive, it is used in 'second conditional' grammar constructions, for exampe: Si fuera rico, viajaría por todo el mundo - If I were rich, I'd travel all over the world - Si tuviera un coche, podría evitar el Metro - If I had a car, I could avoid the Metro.
Your translations are right for the Harry Potter texts - 'as if he were considering' or 'as if he were hoping/waiting for' - these are subjunctive sentences in English too, we just don't really tend to know it!
@@NotesinSpanishofficial Right you are! That makes perfect sense. How on earth did I miss that? 😁Thanks!
It would be helpful to add the text of what is being spoken in Spanish to the bottom of the video. I know they're in the notes, which are great, but it would make the video clearer.
Hi Austin, I totally understand. I tend to put the notes into the actual video when they are short and fit along the bottom of the screen as we speak, but when we use lots of longer phrases I usually put them in the blog post. Certainly I'll take into account what you say and consider putting more into the video itself in the future. Un saludo, Ben
