I've been watching pentatonic lessons on RUclips for around 5 years, and I have seen every channel you can think of teach a lesson on the pentatonic scale. This is by far the best lesson I've seen! Thank you so much!
I can’t believe this dude only has 275k subs. This lesson is gonna change everything. If only I’d had this information 20 years ago. Amazing explanation.
Love it. I feel like by showing us this you've revealed one of your secret tricks. I can hear these 2 note pod runs in your music and it's one of my favourite sounds of yours.
I'm sure what Corey meant to say was ' Buy my signature strat & then you can soak up all these techniques by osmosis from the fret board ...' That's what I told the wife - right before she hid my credit card! DANG!
This is an awesome video, however when you show the C major scale, up the pentatonic one string at a time, the diagram on screen you have up is actually the B major scale not the C major scale, just thought you might want to correct that
Hey, Cory! I've been wanting to tell you this but i just want to thank you and for inspiring me to play more funk lines on my band and adding a new twist on our songs! Thank you for making me fall in love with your music! I'll drop the song here once it's been released. Love ya, Cory!
This is rad! I’ve been playing about 10 years and never have learned my scales but it has been a recent goal of mine to go through them and this is a huge help!
Thank you Cory. This is an outstanding lesson. I've been playing the Pentatonic scale for years, but this gives me new ways to think about them. Now if I could just get 1% if your righthand technique, and sense of groove, I'd really be happening! 😃
this is amazing!its like a cheat code to finally be able to them all together. i havn't even tried this yet and i can tell immediatly that this is what i was missing the whole time. Time to pick up ol betsy
Very cool to run into this. Youre a legend and I use your neuraldsp archetype all the time. Cool lesson, definitely got some good pointers out of it to sound less static playing pentatonic scales
You’re known for your timing. And it really is perfect. I was going through RUclips on how to practice my scales and here you come out with this video. Excellent!
this is video and guitar exercise will be my morning routine until I master it bro, thanks so much man you will make me more cooler than before hahahah
Awesome lesson Cory! Thanks for putting into the effort to share with us. One minor feedback, it would be nice if at the beginning you talked a bit about what is the pentatonic scale and when to use it. That would give good context and motivation for the rest of the lesson. But still a fantastic vid!
I got you on this one: The pentatonic scale we use in music is comprised of 5 notes. This is where the name comes from and will only ever utilize 5 notes from the key (in this particular example, of course). In Cory's example the notes for C major are; C,D,E,G,B! In comparison, the standard key of C major uses all the white keys on the piano or C,D,E,F,G,A, and B. Each note has its own position in relation to the key it is in known as the Scale Degree. C would be the 1st scale degree or 1, D would be the 2nd scale degree or 2, and so on until it gets to B(the 7th scale degree or 7) before it flips back over to the 1st scale degree, C. This repeats up and down the entirety of every scale. One will only ever use 7 notes in a key! Switching keys is when it gets spicy but thats for another lecture. By stripping the 4th scale degree and 7th scale degree from ANY major scale, you will have its pentatonic equivalent. You could do this by determining the root of a key, the respective note positions on said key, identifying which are the 4th and 7th scale degrees, and plucking them out like a stray hair. Less is definitely more with the pentatonic scale because of the space being added between notes-- It is universally agreed upon (see: Jaws theme) that semi-tone movements (think C to C# or a natural semi-tone B to C) add tension in some way. A tone or whole step (C to D for example) seems resolute even if a small step up from the previous note. The pentatonic scale removes all of those semi-tone movements and keeps the "foundation" of the key. Because of this, a musician can utilize these 5 notes in melodic lines, solos, etc, with the freedom of knowing there will be less clashing/tension between the harmony being constructed for the song and their sweet, face-melting solos. The pentatonic scale is a powerful tool that can be adjusted and changed to fit whatever idea you are trying to express musically. It also provides a safety net of being "grounded" to the root of a key (1st scale degree). You can still play some squelchy notes if you got Dave Brubeck on the keys playing jazzy extended chords but i digress. I highly suggest taking one of your favorite keys and jamming over a chord progression with a pentatonic scale! You could sing, whistle, roll the keys, slap the bass, etc. Once you have that down then try and break it: what happens if you flatten the 3rd degree? What happens if you add in all the other notes from the major scale? At the end of the day trust YOUR ear. No one else will ever be able to hear music the way YOU do! Have fun and get cracking!
@@Bobzsz this was honestly the first time I was really told what a pentatonic scale was after 11 years of playing, so this guy isn't totally wrong. This technique boutta make me pop off tho
Came to ask the same thing. Unless someone has a better idea, my thought is focusing on note names, which will help reinforce the fretboard memorization. Then focusing on the sound of the notes.
I’m going to step through this but i have one question. Why ? Maybe if i do it, I’ll see it but at this time, I’m not sure how playing the pentatonic on one string or playing two notes at the same time, Helps memorize and understand.
Lost a few opportunities here. 1) you show the shapes but not the starting position. Are you starting at the 3rd fret? 5th? I had to look you playing to find it out.. 2) differentiate E string from e string. I know it is possible to figure it out looking até the sequence, but contrasting E versus e is much faster and intuitive.
Sooo I'm praciticing them horizontally.. how do I decide which fingers to use? On the way back up Cory seems to use only his first finger.. on the way down it's a lot harder to see.
Still finding myself confused. I know the 5 major pentatonic shapes, and then when he plays them in cmajor In the beginning of the video, the 5 shapes are in a different order. can someone explain? what am I missing here?
Very nice lesson. I've been playing for 30 years and have never seen the bottom/top practice method he is showing near the beginning. He is playing pentatonics in fourths, top to bottom. This is a great exercise to apply over all intervals. Too bad you can hear it in his stale playing.
Tried this so i could be as good as you. Or at-least pretend i was as good as you. I sped up the video to be cool. Didn’t realize that a snail was in the fence. Now they’ve tossed me out of the band and signed the snail up for the olympics.
Does NO ONE HERE have the heart to tell Cory that what he's playing here isn't the diagram shown, EVER??? 1:14, 1:24, 1:33, 1:42, 1:51 No one reviewed that the diagram being shown was what was being played! The first person pointing this out, should get a free ticket to a Cory Wong concert, just sayin'!
What a world we live in where Cory Wong teaches guitar on RUclips for free.
...first thing that popped in my head too.
Whilst it is indeed great, it was also a cheap to do advert for his course. I’ll probably buy it myself😁.
…no kidding.
My great grandfather's family name was Rodden. He was born in Manorhamilton in Ireland but worked as a coal miner in Fife, Scotland 😮. 🎸🇨🇵🇪🇺

Love this! Always a good time to work on fundamentals
This lesson is gold✨✨✨
I'm sure what Corey meant to say was ' Buy my signature strat & then you can soak up all these techniques by osmosis from the fret board ...' That's what I told the wife - right before she hid my credit card! DANG!
thanks a LOT for this masterclass on pentatonic scale. I guess it could be applied on every mode, in every key, mayor or minor
This is an awesome video, however when you show the C major scale, up the pentatonic one string at a time, the diagram on screen you have up is actually the B major scale not the C major scale, just thought you might want to correct that
Yeah this had me confused for a minute
I liked and subscribed. This is my gateway out of the boxes that I have been looking for. Practice Practice Practice time. Thanks!

I'll drop the song here once it's been released. Love ya, Cory!
It is sometimes takes some time to finish the song, one year is like nothing)))
Thank you for this lesson!! Perfect for where I'm at with lead guitar right now.
This is rad! I’ve been playing about 10 years and never have learned my scales but it has been a recent goal of mine to go through them and this is a huge help!
I would like to see a video on the musicality part you shared at the end if there isn’t already! Good content
Thank you Cory. This is an outstanding lesson. I've been playing the Pentatonic scale for years, but this gives me new ways to think about them. Now if I could just get 1% if your righthand technique, and sense of groove, I'd really be happening! 😃

Excellent!
I needed this at 14, big time
this is video and guitar exercise will be my morning routine until I master it bro, thanks so much man you will make me more cooler than before hahahah
Nice Job of a Nice Guitar Player.. thanks a lot…
So great. The graphic around the 7:00 minute mark confused the hell out of me for a while

Thank you very much fotr the lesson, Maestro! Really appreciate it! :)
You inspired me to rock out with my wong out!
Really helpful! Thanks!
Hi! more courses! i love it thanks dude! God bless you
Thanks bro, very good
Cool...but isn't B the root on the fretboard graphic starting at 5:20?
My man! Loved this video!
Doooood. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Solidify
Thanks for the cool tips, Cory! Those exercises are tons of fun.
Fantastic lesson Cory. Thanks for posting!!
What is the name of that blue on your Strat? It looks like a satin finish. Really cool.
What are you thinking when you play this? Are you thinking note names? Fret numbers? How do I get this in my head and hands fastest?
Came to ask the same thing. Unless someone has a better idea, my thought is focusing on note names, which will help reinforce the fretboard memorization. Then focusing on the sound of the notes.
thank you.
Thank you for this! It's gotten me out of a practice/creative rut!

Very cool
Hello thank you for this lesson.
What brand computer monitor is in the background, and what size? Thank you
04:40 - 04:46 Evening routine.....

I feel like this is the secret of Cory's whole sound! Lol
Around 1:15 when you first demonstrate playing the scale are you playing the Root (C) first on the A string or the (G) on the low E string?
Sooo I'm praciticing them horizontally.. how do I decide which fingers to use? On the way back up Cory seems to use only his first finger.. on the way down it's a lot harder to see.
How you feel confortable, there isn’t a way
I’m doing exactly same stuff with D minor, cause I’m a Drop D cowboy samurai haha
Which level is the course? Where could a starting intermediate player begin?
the course is perfect for intermediate players!
Can you play the scale on any fret ?
Peace!
Can you help me learn the Penta? “Sure we will make this easy, learn 2 notes at a time instead of one” 😂😂🤦♂️
1:40, 1:50
Still finding myself confused. I know the 5 major pentatonic shapes, and then when he plays them in cmajor In the beginning of the video, the 5 shapes are in a different order. can someone explain? what am I missing here?
wow

graphics all show B as the root (red note) of the scale? I'm a noob but this seems incorrect?
The illustration is short of 1 fret.
NONE of the diagrams match what he plays, huge editing mistake here...
Th bro
Fretboard missing the first case from 5:20 ?
NONE of the diagrams match what he plays... huge mistake in editing this together...
Please why if in c major are you starting on the 4th . Your fretboard is half a step out.
Show NOT tell 👍🎸👍.
The octave notes start on b not c?
4:01
8:37
I know all five shapes and can play them like I robot but I don’t know how to make it sound like actual music if you know what I mean lol
Could you repeat that please?
Tried this so i could be as good as you. Or at-least pretend i was as good as you. I sped up the video to be cool. Didn’t realize that a snail was in the fence. Now they’ve tossed me out of the band and signed the snail up for the olympics.
im the man in the box
buried in my shit
wont you come and save me?
GET OUT OF THE BOX
Dude I think you are the bomb and this video is great, but dude, your fingers are at least 10”s long. Holy crap man that is ridiculously funny.
Cory never moves from position 4...
You did not put there which fret they are
Does NO ONE HERE have the heart to tell Cory that what he's playing here isn't the diagram shown, EVER???

What happened to the lab coat and accent?
Фредгитарист сказал что ты плохо играешь ,так что иди учись сам
Who do you suggest
@SPotter1973 Ross Bolton
2 year old video the scale chart is in B NOT C Threw me off .
First
Last to notice none of the fingering diagrams match what he is playing...
Ive been playing the Amin pent scale on the 5th fret for 10 years and had no idea I was permitted to play it on other frets
A gentleman and a scholar. Thanks Cory
