I watched mother just because of this video, man these korean movies are awesome...Oldboy, Memories of murder, New World, I saw the devil, are just a few examples of very good korean movies that I watched recently.
I've seen I Saw The Devil too and it was amazing! More graphic, more suspense, more action in ISTD than Mother…but doesn't make Mother any less awesome.
I really noticed the use of windows for framing in this movie as well, and I think it definitely goes along with the idea of us being witness who can't do anything about it. Such a great film; so many layers of mysteries to solve, and even when the main one is resolved, the mysteries of the characters, and why they do what they do stays with you. Really enjoyed your analysis! I'd be interested in what you thought of Birdman, as I just saw it recently, and absolutely loved some of the things it did with film form.
Just watched Mother on your recommendation (I switched off your video at the spoiler warning). It's a masterpiece. Thank you. Now I watched your excellent video on it, too. Great analysis as ever!
I've gotta say Tony, your videos are some of the most impressive content I've faced within this subject. I think that just by looking at the ratio between likes and dislikes about this video shows how golden these things are
Bong Joon-ho is one of the best filmmakers alive today. Mother, The Host, Snowpiercer; all immaculately-crafted, boldly original, and wildly entertaining films. * * * Still my favorite director 6 years later. 1. Parasite 2. The Host 3. Memories of Murder 4. Mother 5. Snowpiercer 6. Okja 7. Barking Dogs Never Bite
Snowpiercer was by far his weakest though. I just can't being myself to enjoy it, even though it has some solid cinematography. The acting and plotholes just ruin it for me

I believe i did watch the start of the video at least tthree times before watching the movie, and finally seeing the video. Man, I'm happy I waited till i saw the movie before watching the video.
I watched this video a while back. A couple of times maybe, but a year or so ago. So, when I watched it recently, I didn't remember what exactly the spoiler was but I remembered that this movie was great. Wasn't disappointed!
I just binge watched all of your uploads. I regret nothing! These are so well made and informative, it's hard to not enjoy them. I am a huge fan of the things you don't notice right in front of you while watching films. That once explained cause a facepalm and a "I can't believe I didn't notice that!" but that's the point almost. That the first viewing it is all about affect, how "x" shot teleports your point of view into the story. Then on second or later viewings we look behind the curtain to see the levers being pulled. I highly enjoy movies and understanding why certain choices were made. So, please, keep making these. They are right up my alley.
This film is one of my favourites and I couldn't exactly explain why I love this movie in particular but after watching your explanation for this film form in detail, it explains so much! Your analysis is easy with fun and very clear! I think I will be your consistent subscriber from now on. Thanks, Tony!
Such an incredible film. I was lucky enough that my first viewing of Mother was the black and white version originally intended by Bong Joon-ho, it really gives the film a whole other dynamic.
I too watched mother just because of this video. Thank you for making these videos, as a novice filmmaker, they are very informative. If you make a tribute for Miyazaki one day, I will be forever grateful.
I, too, have watched Mother because of this video. I just happened to stumble upon Who Wins The Scene in Silence Of The Lambs and have subscribed to your channel since. I'm neither a professional OR a novice filmmaker but I find these topics very interesting. You allow us to truly see a scene and understand a director's motive in movies. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
+Every Frame a Painting I'm actually glad that you've done Satoshi Kon long before Miyazaki. Kon gets easily overshadowed by Miyazaki in the west because his film content is vastly different. Yet in my personal opinion, Kon's films are superior those of Miyazaki.
Bong Joon Ho is releasing his new korean film since 10 years called Parasite in may. Where have u gone dear channel owner?.. hope u aint dead and watch it too
Had to pause the video and go and watch the film. I've just finished it and can't believe this is my first time hearing about it??! Man I loved it!! The ending surprised me; I certainly did not see that coming. If it weren't for this video I probably wouldn't have seen it. Thank you!
"There's actually a lotta great videos on the Internet analyzing movie content or themes, but I think we're missing stuff about the actual form --- you know, the pictures and the sound." ---> That summarizes most of my qualms with 'Certified' critics on Rottentomatoes as well as amateur movie-reviewers, bloggers, and cinephilia in general. Most people only seem to articulate how they feel about filmmaking in terms of characterizations, story, and screenplay terms. Not that those elements aren't important to filmmaking, but I've always been puzzled as to why people aren't more visually literate given how overwhelmingly dependent humans are on eyesight and visuals to survive.
I think critics is there to analyse the story told. But it's cinephiles where this suffers. If you say you are a cinephile and the first thing you mention about a movie is how good the actors were you have no idea what you're talking about.
@@HermanFalckHow Acting is a visual component quite important of a movie tho... But i get what u mean, if a reviewer doesnt give adequate importance to editing, photogram composition, estructure of a scene and those kind of things they dont know what they are talking about.

I'm another one of the many who began watching this, stopped at 0:37 and only came back upon finishing the film. It took me nearly a year to get around to it, but it was worth it. I'd seen a few of Bong's other films before, so this was always on my list, but now I've finally seen Mother, and your analysis was spot on.
Bong Joon Ho did this as well in Parasite, with some of the conversation scenes and especially the massacre- where the most parts of the movie was shot normally with wide to medium lenses on the Alexa 65.
I think i am in love with your voice. Well, mostly how well you explain things and how clear everything is in your head. Everything you make is filmmaking in itself because verything you say is so well thought out. :) Thank you, it really opens my eyes to the details and helps me appreciate and pick out the good directors from the not so great ones.
OH MY GOD THIS MOVIE! I watched this years ago but could never remember what it was called, only that it was amazing. Thank you so much for doing a video on this, now I can show it to my friends.
You do a really good work which permit me to put words on what i like in movies. You give me explanation and some clues for having a better readability of those movies. Thanks you I love Korean movies !
