    THANK YOU FOR THIS. I'm so often clueless when it comes to sideboarding, preferring to keep an "if it ain't broke" stance on the whole matter.

    I like how the general consensus to the question "why is this one card in the sideboard?" is that it's there specifically to fight off annoying control/blue players. Made me laugh because it's probably true more often than not.

  • @xXNoFateXx
    @xXNoFateXx 6 лет назад

    It should also be noted that one should test the sideboard specifically to understand how to best incorporate that sideboard into their respective deck **without screwing up the decks overall number of win conditions and outs too much** and **with an understanding of how those sideboard choices are going to effect how they should make play choices in game**

    I'd say some of the best advice I can give is, if you struggle against a certain matchup, ask someone who pilots that deck regularly how to handle it better, how to sideboard against it and how to otherwise take advantage of its weaknesses.

    The sideboard is your friend! Know it! Love it!
    I always get exasperated with the netdecking sideboards. Even if you can't name every card in your deck (which really, why not?), you're right, you should know your board in and out. Also, nail on the head with versatility. Very good video, sir.

  • @notyourtypicalcomicreader4805

    I usually put a temporary sideboard together before I finalize it - play at one or two FNMs at my LGS and maybe one or two FNMs at another LGS and fix my sideboard from there.

    Some little tips:
    1) Side in Stony Silence against AdNauseam (modern, not ANT) to shut down their acceleration.
    2) If you win, side against their sideboard, cause you've got their starting 60 beat. Now if you lucksacked a win off the top of your deck, ignore this.
    3) Use versatile SB choices. For example, Baloth is better than Thragtusk if you're expecting discard, but Thragtusk is the better card versus spot removal.
    4) Blood Moon is not the only answer to nonbasic lands.

  • @Marcination
    @Marcination 9 лет назад

    One thing that I might want to stress to new players in modern especially is the following tip: Don't try to hate on an unwinnable matchup. For example, when you are playing a grindy midrange deck (Jund, Abzan, BW Tokens), you do have sideboard options against decks like tron - however those matchups will still be very bad unless you have add an extensive amount of them, diluting your sideboard to the point where they could have tilted other, less decisive matchups in your favour.

    Some questions:
    1. 4-ofs in the SB or singles?
    2. Lands in the SB?
    3. Alt-win cards in the SB?
    I understand the answers to these questions are, "It depends .." but that's what I want to know: what do they depend on?

    • @schlockfather
      @schlockfather 5 лет назад

      After 2 years I don't know if you care, but this is it for me for the first question. Side 4 only if absolutely necessary to the point where you feel like you can't go without seeing it if needed. Run 3 of a card most of the time if you want to consistentially use and utilize the card, but you don't quite need the redundancy of 4 or you have other cards that do similar things on the side/main boards. Run 2 of a card only if you need room for other cards on the side and can't crunch the numbers or it's a niche card like crumble to dust that will be extremely hit or miss in match ups across the board. Lastly, I only ever run 1 of a card on side if it's to fill out the total of 4 cards from cards on the main board or it's just another version of a better card. Like running a tormods crypt with 2 relics of progenitus. Or better yet running a single blasphemous act and Pyroclasm on side because you already have 3 Pyroclasms main board.

    • @schlockfather
      @schlockfather 5 лет назад

      Also I wasn't saying tormods crypt is better than relic or nothing, but that's a personal choice in case dredge hates on relic in game two.

    • @schlockfather
      @schlockfather 5 лет назад

      For question 2, lands are fine, but I would really only say run utility lands like field of ruin or ghost quarter if needed, but only if you don't have room on main board for the land cards.

    • @schlockfather
      @schlockfather 5 лет назад

      And for 3, alternate win cons are fine, I like it more so when they do other utility based things then just push me to win like world breaker in tron or something. Be careful though if your alternate win condition is the same card type as your main win condition because that means potential hate/removal on game two could hit that as well, but that's also still not completely bad because you would have more ways to win and more things needing answers.

    • @schlockfather
      @schlockfather 5 лет назад

      All in all, I like focusing on my defense and personal well being first and foremost in my side. I don't like being prevented from playing the game.
      Secondly, focusing on ways to prevent people from playing the game the way they want to is what I do. Either through removal or hate cards.
      And lastly, I fill in the remaining slots with additional copies of cards or cards with similar effects to bolster my redundancy in the match ups where my initial build is already strong.
      I'm a green red tron player and that's just my take on it all. Hope I helped.

    I liked this vid but I always struggle with what to remove to put in the sideboard.

    • @jadedflames
      @jadedflames 9 лет назад +1

      +theillusionary It's usually a matter of what cards didn't seem to do as well as usual. Something I have found helps is, if everything seems good, take out one of the least good playset. If the card you are putting in really improves your deck, can you make do with slightly less odds of drawing something in your main?

    In Yugioh I will never forget the time someone played 'Prohibition' against me in game 2. 'Probhibition' lets you declare a card and neither player can play it for the rest of the game, and little did he know, the card he prohibited was 'Skill Drain', a card that I side boarded out for game 2 and 3 looool. I never told him that I sided out the card he prohibited either loool. So he negatived himself for nothing XD.

    Whenever I go to FNM, I use my favourite deck, my black/blue controller deck. My sideboard is about twice the size of my actual deck and I have cards against ANY deck. FYI, I value +MTG Degree for being so responsive to people who make comments on these videos, I think it is very good to interact with people who love your videos. Funny how everyone (although there are exceptions to everything) in the magic community is nice and are more likely yo help you than criticise you.
    Please keep up the good work!
    Also one last comment from me, could you do a video on how effective duel decks are. I have been looking for a duel deck to play with my friend, because he sucks at making decks, so if there is a fair and balanced duel deck out there, please tell us!

    • @CodeProvider

      @MTGDegree  9 лет назад

      +leonard ivanov Mmmmm, generally I've felt that the Duel Decks released by Wizards are pretty balanced against eachother. But to be honest, I'm too spiky to play with decks that are designed to be balanced against eachother. Maybe sometime soon I'll look into it, but as of now I'd just say that I don't know the answer :p

    • @thatmadpenguin2024
      @thatmadpenguin2024 9 лет назад

      +MTG Degree Okay thank you. Its just anytime I play with my friend, I always demolish him. I would make him an equally good deck, but I dont have the cards. So a duel deck would probably be the best option, but thank you for pointing out that most duel decks are equal. (The only duel deck I know of is zendikar vs eldrazi, and I heard the eldrazi is not very balanced to the zendikar deck.)

    i got burned pretty bad by a truely honest comment about a card in my deck. i took it like he was being truthful but was giving information he wanted to give me as a bluff and i thought he had a sideboard plan for it but in fact the reason it scared him was that he actually had no sideboard plan for it and was legitimately scared so when i sideboarded the card out to go from a midrange to aggro/tempo strategy i had sideboarded out the better win condition and lost by a turn x.x

    memerizing your sideboard is a great piece of advice I recently played my first fnm sideboarded in lands and couple artifacts because my opponent literitly only won BC of sphinxes tutalige and jace memory adept when I showed the deck to a friend I realized I had some cards in the sideboard that I didn't return to the main deck and I still can't figure out what I put in for them and that was a week ago

    While I agree that Kataki is better than stony silence in a company deck, Kataki dies to galvanic blast, and your opponent can play through it for a few turns. Stony is harder to kill, and more effective. Also, you can chord of calling for Kataki so you only really need 1, and you are going to remove creatures anyway because the deck runs a few situational 1 odd to chord for. For this reason, I run 1 Kataki and 2 stony in my deck

    My strong strong advice is always think in terms of the moment and the current game. I find too many people go into game 1 thinking, urg this is such a bad matchup, I don't care about game 1, my sideboard cards (insert card here) will significantly help this matchup. Or is this sideboard card correct? Should I play this or that?
    Always focus on the game and your outs. Don't think about these thjngs

This way the opponent cant look at my mat and see 4 cards going in and me pulling out 4 cards. They just see a bunch of cards everywhere. Just my personal strategy.

  • @Moshhe19

    I am not sure if you still read comments on this old video, but trying does not hurt, here is my question:
    You mentioned sideboarding to counter an enemy artifact (in your case Mesmeric orb)
    In my case it's an enemy artifact that gives the creature Hexproof, the creature already has Flying-Deathtouch-Lifelink.
    This combination kills me near everytime.
    So my plan was to add some cards that can destroy target artifact because i don't see any other way to counter that combination.
    Am i right in thinking in my case this is the smart choice? or is there a better choice?
    thank you!

    My question is how do you sideboard in game 3, when in game 2 you've already side boarded what's good against the match-up?

    • @MTGDegree
      @MTGDegree  9 лет назад +1

      +MrSonictheOtter If the rest of your sideboard is truly full of non-cards for the matchup, then just pick up your deck and pretend to sideboard a bit. Sometimes though, your sideboard can simply change your role, like from midrange to control. Or famously in Splinter Twin, from combo to control. Additionally, some cards become worse on the draw than on the play, such as counterspells. Consider turn order before the game as well :)
