- The Defense Department will no longer use "official resources" to celebrate "cultural awareness months." This is according to guidance from Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth issued Friday. This came on the eve of Black History month, which began Saturday, February 1st.
The list of celebrations called out include National African American/Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month and National American Indian Heritage Month.
“We are proud of our warriors and their history, but we will focus on the character of their service instead of their immutable characteristics,” the guidance says. It notes that service members and civilians may attend events “in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours.”

Literally the entire point of military uniformity is that you are all cogs in a well oiled machine. This "diversity, everybodys included, youre all special, lets celebrate every single political category of people possible!" is anathema to the very basic working of the military. Its pathetic, encourages our enemies that we are weak, wastes valuable time, destroys cohesion in military units, is an unwanted distraction that nobody likes, and is across the board destructive to a functioning unit, and Im so glad its stopped.
We should celebrate being Americans equally
Black history month, LGBTQ pride, Hispanic pride, Asian pride never hunted anyone. At the end of the day that's what America is. A land of diversity and the freedom to be proud of who you are.

Every time obama or biden would start a new term, there was a new wave of non-military training, combat, or MOS specific training akin to BS paperwork that nobody wanted to have wasting our time that would start. It seriously drew time away from doing actual important stuff, time is extremely important and scarce in the military. This was usually ineffective check boxes that added nothing to the unit but ate up time. It stopped when trump was elected the first time, and it never was anything like what barry instituted prior to the obama admin.
Btw, obama is 110% why afghanistan and iraq were failures (on our side of things, the enemy always gets a vote). These programs contributed to that.

Black history month and the like was a compromise that shouldn’t have appeased anyone but did. Black people have realized that they have to study themselves regardless of what anyone else does. Refraining from mentioning the contributions of all people to include black people and other groups instead of the whitewash we have gotten puts all of us at a disadvantage. That's already built into the new mandate, actually. Service members are forbidden from attending events during duty hours, and service members are not supposed to wear their uniforms during off duty activities.

I remember we had these identity month events back in the 90s. These events were mandatory and often took place after duty hours. And people would waste all kinds of time planning these events, it was like the Party Planning Committee on The Office.

I was secretary and vice president of our Diversity Committee at my first Navy command. Only white guy there, even with a board seat wasn't allowed to say much since none of the celebrations were applicable to me. But being a member helped with making promotion because it fills a block on our yearly evaluation. Glad he got rid of that crap.

I hated being called a Mexican or Spanish American. I am an American, period! My ex-wife was born in Cuba and came here to the US with her family as a legal refugee. She busted her butt learning English and losing the Spanish accent on her English. After high school she enlisted in the Coast Guard and served for ten-years getting out as a YN-1. When she tested for YN-2, she wrote the top score Coast Guard-wide. No help from her being a Latina (a term she hated and still does). She felt she could do it all on her own and didn't need to show the Spanish card or female card to get ahead.

I can't count the number of hours of wasted training time we spent attending different heritage events during my time in the Army. This is a great decision to get rid of that crap and concentrate on the mission.
