      No side to chose read the books, the blacks have the birthright claim… if the greens were in the right they wouldn’t need the Triarchy ☠️ lowest of the low, which basically stamps them as villains in history. Rhaenyra is largely missing from the texts at this point. Also it make sense now how they took kings landing at the perfect time, if they had this back room deal it makes sense.

    • @thez-list6274
      @thez-list6274 Месяц назад +3

      I think this could actually work in some sense if it was done better, because of how biased the maesters are in telling the story in the books, it could be a really cool angle to show those events from a more even light but instead they just did the opposite and painted alicent in a bad light instead of rhaenyra

  • @hayleys-w5q
    @hayleys-w5q Месяц назад +364

    Helena becomes a different character in the blink of an eye in this episode, from cryptic whispered comments to confrontational clarity. Alicent goes from throwing herself in front of a dragon to protect Aegon at his coronation to basically giving Rhaenyra permission to kill him and not a word said about the murder of Helena's son. Rhaena, the daughter of a princess and the sea snake wanders the wilderness alone and no one from her escort party even notices let alone goes after her. Smh. We're well into S8 GoT territory.

      @AlternativPerspectiv Месяц назад +33

      Listen between the lines in this video and you can clearly tell people are not impressed by the whole season (in hindsight) but peer pressure and some cognitive dissonance is at play. They WANT to say this show is nowhere near GoT and is a disappointment, but fear calls their name.
      Viewers were strung along on a barebones thread that could have covered 2, maybe 3 episodes. All the while the war was being dangled at their beak to get them to "tune in next week for the next exciting episode of...!". At the end... no dragon wars. Same happened in the previous season. where there were battles they happened offscreen. What was more important? The aimless, pointless banter that went nowhere, was repetitive and had exposes and reveals that fell flat. Dream scenes and supposed bread crumbs for the desperate fan to nibble on that amount to nothing.
      But hey... did you see that awesome closing scene with the black chick and the dragon? Oooooooh! Man! And and and.. did you see the queen looking fierce and determined looking into the distance? Ooooh and and and that army, daaaaaaamn!
      LOL.
      I was a huge GoT fan (preSeason 6ish) but naah... this whole show is a 2/10 for me. And this episode was a 1/20.

      Yep 100% the "arc" they put Daemon through was all easily derived from season one without being so hamfisted and in your face as in S2. Season two's portrayal of Daemon was done solely to deconstruct his character so the writers fave Rheyneara would be elevated by comparison - since she wasn't liked enough for their satisfaction. It was nakedly obvious and frustrating they were unable to see it.

      This exactly. Besides, if memory serves right:
      - Rhaenys got a lot of smallfolk killed after escaping back in 1.09
      - Meleys, Vhaghar and Sunfyre (not sure about him) roasted an undetermined number of soldiers in Rook’s Rest
      - Smallfolk starved to death thanks to the blockade of the Black faction
      - Vermithor happily feasted on the bastards and Rhaenyra didn’t give a f*ck
      I mean, that “we don’t want people to die” becomes pretty ridiculous and hypocritical given that people are already dying and not only because of the actions of men.

      It was so dumb because Rainares sneaks into King's Landing to have a secret meeting with Alicent. And then in this episode Alicent has some revelation and decides to sneak into her city because poetry rhymes. The guards are like, yeah that's fine. But for some reason she's 180° now and wants a war no matter what. The writing is so stupid written it reminded me of The Last Jedi the way people can come and go so they can have some scenes.

    -Daemons spends a season torn between his hunger for power and the understanding of how hard it is to bear it, only to have a vision of the future and make his final choice based only on that (making the rest of the visions totally pointless)
    -Aemond has to convince haelena to ride into battle and doesn't even mentions how it would protect her kid from the people that killed the first one
    -Helaena has now telepathy and just spoils the future events, like this
    -Rhaenyra going with the "a son for a son" as if they didn't already kill jaeherys and alicent didn't just tell her to kill aemond lol, and of course alicent doesn't reply😂

      It's possible Alicent thinks they are bound to lose now that the Dragon advantage has swapped. Trading a son who is so injured that he has stated he wants to die for everyone else's life isn't unrealistic.
      -Daemon changing plans after receiving new information is super realistic. If you were planning to invade a country, then found out that space aliens were coming to exterminate humanity, of course you would immediately 100% change focus towards stopping the aliens. It would be idiotic to just go back to planning the invasion.

    • @FringeSpectre

      Jumping in front of the dragon was a split second, instinctual decision, as opposed to her slow, tear filled realization that if she wants to end the war, Aegon needs to die. You can't compare the two scenes the way you are and be good faith. Also Jahaerys was Helaena's kid, not Allicent's.

    This show has a massive issue with the writing of the main female characters. The writers' attitude towards Rhanerya, Allicent, and Rhaenys has always been super sympathetic and tempered, as if the things these women set in motion and the the terrible outcomes they are responsible for are somehow never really their fault, or can be explained away by circumstance, or having to live in a world of men, or bad luck or other characters' who benefit from their mistakes. It's the Boogie effect. Somehow, they are always the downtrodden or noble victims caught in a cross-fire, and never treated like the grown adults with agency and accountability that would make them far more compelling as characters.
    Even when called out for their behaviour within the show itself, there's always an out, or the conversation is framed in a way that suggests that the person calling one of them out isn't totally correct or speaking in bad faith or the show will artificially give one of the women a forced win that doesn't feel earned at all. It's really weird, and now we're reaping the sum of this wonky approach to their character writing. The internal morality, logic, and motivations of each character is now wildly off - what the show wants us to think about these characters doesn't line up at all with what it's actually shown us.
    Rhanerya: show wants us to see a committed, cautious, and compassionate leader. Show has shown us a reckless, indecisive, and weak leader who is a horrible judge of character and couldn't inspire a dog to its dish.
    Allicent: show wants us to see a victim forced to operate and survive in terrible circumstances who has had all her agency stripped from her. Show has shown us a woman who has known full well the game she was getting into, chose to play it, played well, until it went sideways, and now wants to infantilise her part in its outcomes. A poor mother, worse leader, and hypocrite.
    Rhaenys: show wants us to see a strong, wise, capable woman who would have been a great queen. Show shows us a hypocritical, opportunistic, elitist who's completely unaware of the lives she has ruined and the mistakes she has made.
    It's pretty wild how it's spiralled this far out of control within the span of 9 episodes.

      I've noticed some of the same discrepancies you've listed here, which is why I don't quite buy this panel's usual defense that the show isn't "woke" because it shows female characters making big mistakes, all the while my gut keeps seeing the actual framing as "these women aren't able to succeed because the men are bad."

      It's what made GoT in its earlier seasons so compelling. The show recognised not only when characters made mistakes but that they were mistakes others learned from and acknowledged in-universe. When Ned trusted Cersei, when Joffrey executed Ned, Tyrion making 1 too many enemies while hand, Rob breaking his oath to the Freys these are all brilliantly handled and the characters errors are examined well. There's so much purpose and intent behind everything GoT shows us. It's hyperaware in those early seasons.
      This show, much less so. Especially this season.

The other issue is, books fans are deeply involved, usually have a higher intellect than the tv show fans. But they are not enough book fans to make such an expensive show profitable, unfortunately. To get enough viewers, you're forced to downgrade the complexity of the show, the number of characters, and to make really nuanced backgrounds more manichean. I would say it was justified as one of her sons has lost his eye and nobody suffered any consequences. She was in all posters promoting this show as the queen of the other side, opposition to Rhaenrya, and she could be completely erased from this season and it wouldn't differ much. The last scene is a complete assassination of her character by making her not only beyond stupid but also ruthless and opportunistic by sacrificing her whole family to escape the consequences of her actions. I refuse to give her any honourable intentions that she wants to protect the realm, if her son is a twat that is solely her responsibility and she cannot just ignore that and take no accountability for it.

      @@Vynesa The fact that she has to comply with her son's death IS the consequence of her actions. She's not doing it for her own peace of mind; that was a happy fantasy at first but it was swiftly crushed when Rhaenyra voices Alicent's greatest fear: Your son must die for me to ascend. This conversation intentionally mirrors the one between young Alicent and Otto in Season 1 Episode 5. Alicent ultimately gives in for the sake of her other children, Helaena and Daeron, the ones who are yet pure. It's quite clear she believes that if the war continues they will either meet a fate as horrible as Aegon's (or worse) or become as monstrous as Aemond. It's a terrible choice either way, and she decides to try and save those of her family who are not yet corrupted, and in doing so make up for her own failings which brought them to that point while also honoring Viserys' last wishes. All of her scenes this season have been carefully building toward exactly this. The questionable logistics of how she's able to meet Rhaenyra aside, it's honestly kind of brilliant and I'm baffled by the degree to which the fandom and this panel seem to want to misunderstand it.
      The actual greatest sin this episode commits is the assassination of Daemon, as it fasts forwards to the end point of an arc that was maybe 40% complete, strips him of all ambition and personality, trivializes his toxic and extremely complicated relationship with Rhaenyra, and instead of providing some semblance of a substantial payoff to Alys and the mystery of Harrenhal just throws in a half assed vision that answers nothing and only exists to bait fans of the books by key jangling things that the original show screwed up but have nothing to do with the story that _this_ show is telling.

    • @Vynesa
      @Vynesa Месяц назад +2

      @@dragonmcmx of course it is a consequence of her actions, but allowing Aegon to be publically executed is not taking accountability for her failings if she asks Rhaenyra to allow her to escape with her daughter. In my opinion, Alicent starts to reflect on everything only when power is slowly taken away from her, not by seeing the consequences of the war. I understand your point of view, but I could consider it if Alicent would give herself to Rhaenyra along with all the “corrupted” family members as she is one of them and way more responsible for everything that has happened than Aegon, who again, never wanted this, was forced by his mother to take the throne and basically dragged back to the castle.
      So personally, I don't see this careful build up. I see a miserable woman desperately holding to the rest of the power she has, and when that is taken away, she tries to save herself and her chosen family members. Pathetic, purely idiotic and completely irredeemable after that for me.

    How can people say there’s no comedy in this show when we have the Rhaena scenes? 😂
    I burst out laughing every time they cut back to a Targaryen princess - effectively if not De Jure - being allowed to wander the wilderness and not once did she meet an Arryn guard, a shepherd or a Vale tribesman.
    All they had to do was show a scene where one of the guards goes to her tent and it’s empty, him panicking because he can’t find her, then cut to her in the wilderness.
    That at least would be somewhat excusable but still not by much because she’s putting everyone in the Vale at risk with her stupidity because if she dies, Rhaenyra is within her rights to nuke the Eyrie for not protecting her. This was just such a dumb, reckless, needless action because they could have just given us Nettles and that would be fine.

Endless yapping, people conveniently teleporting, no action. Gender swapping Lohar because the writers can't help themselves not having another girlboss ordering around, overpowering or intimidating every man in 500m radius because script says so. Alicent suddenly willing to give up her son since the script needs to hammer the point that women are willing to sacrifice everything to prevent conflict while the men are wildly rushing to it.

    a whole season wasted so we can go back to where the show was at the end of season 1 episode 10: The ships from driftmark are still closing the gullet. The greens still have King's Landing. Armies are still just marching. Prophecies have become outright spoken spoilers by characters in the show now instead of vague speeches which can be interpreted in any way (Daemon will die in the gods eye and so will Aemond. Thanks, show, for telling me what will happen two years from now). The only thing that happened in 8 episodes is that Otto seems to be incarcerated (which happened off-screen btw) and that Rhaenys died. Almost 8 hours wasted for this garbage...
    Alicent going from protecting her rapist son from a dragon to selling her sons out and giving Rhaenyra the go to kill her son. Right after Rhaenyra sanctioned killing Alicent's grandson. I have to say the writing of this show is pure garbage.

      @@RAZGR1Z I dont know if you understand what the word "spoiler" means. Let me help you out: according to google the word "spoiler" is synonymous with "a description of an important plot development in a TV show which if previously known may reduce surprise". The opening tapestry is showing things that happened before the show even started (like the collapse of the Valerian empire) and summarizes what happened in previous episodes (such as Vhagar killing Arrax, Jahaery's beheading and Aegon winning over Rhaenys) which to everybody who watches the show in accordance to the date they are released is not a spoiler 🤔 ... with every episode released the next episodes opening credits added a plot point from the previous episode. The tapestry never showed what happened two episodes later as you seem to infer with your comment. So no the tapestry does not classify as spoiler, unlike two characters specifically stating that Daemon and Aemond will die in the god's Eye, which of course to book readers are no spoilers, but to people watching the show definitely are.

    I went into this show like a woman with a high bodycount, unable to get attached no matter how good it is but also able to let go easily if things turn south, like this season of HotD. It's better than Ryan acting like HotD popped his cherry.

    1:56:55 So are y'all gonna ignore/overlook the fact that this scene PROVES that the showrunners/writers purposefully rewrote (& ruined) Blood/Cheese bc they were "saving it" for Rhaenyra to confront Alicent w/the "impossible mother choice"..
    Ep1, we thought they just botched it, they "missed the mark" & then Condal came out to do damage control saying: "We have to abide by Child Acting laws/regulations, we dont have Maelor in our adaptation so we couldn't stay faithful to the source material, etc
    But NO, it was rewritten on purpose bc they knew they were having this finale Rhaenyra/Alicent scene & they wanted RHAENYRA to say the "a son for a son" line.
    Except it fell flat again. It made less sense here after everything that's gone on. This scene was the one that annoyed me the most in this finale.

    I was disappointed by season 2. I won't be watching season 3. The bias towards the Blacks, Mysaria, Rhaela chasing the dragon, the mud fight, Alicent being treated like the villain. I all just overwhelmed me with its stupidity.

    It's actually impressive how fast this show has gone downhill. Not even gradual like Game of Thrones, but falling off a cliff. A whole season of set up, blue balling viewers to make them come back for season 3 is insulting to the audience that gave this show a chance after season 8 of GoT. These writers insist on wasting viewers time so I'm not going to waste my time with the third season. Ciao.

      Thats pretty much sums it up perfectly. Ep 4 was perfect but before and after that was nothing but an edge fest. “Will there be action? Any action? Oooop no action?? How about nudity? Any sex (straight sex)??? Any fighting???? No fighting??” Waaaaaaay too much set up, every episode was a set up for the build up of the next ep

    The season finale was an hour of boring blabla, after which the two queens met and did boring blabla and then the season was over.

    You can’t blame this finale on GRRM wanting 4 seasons Gary. He wanted 4 ten episode seasons. HBO chose to do 8 episode seasons. Same shit they did to him with GoT.

      George doesn’t deserve any grace given the fact that he left the show runners with nothing to work off of when he had more than enough time to finish the story. I normally rag on D&D for how they chose to rush the last two seasons for a Star Wars movie that never came to be, but George left a pair of writers who are excellent at adaptation but terrible at creating new material with little to work from. This show, HotD, was based on a book that George wrote to distract himself from finishing ASOIF.
