    THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE (1913)
    Songwriters: lyric by Ballard MacDonald, music by Harry Carroll
    CHORUS
    In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia
    On the trail of the lonesome Pine
    In the pale moonshine our hearts entwine
    Where you carved your name and I carved mine.
    Oh, June - like the mountains I'm blue
    Like the pine - I am lonesome for you
    In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia
    On the trail of the lonesome Pine.
    Original verse (Not sung by Brenda and Rex):
    On a mountain in Virginia stands a lonesome Pine
    Just below is the little cabin home of a little girl of mine
    Her name is June and very, very soon she'll belong to me
    For I know she's waiting there for me 'neath that lone Pine tree.

    Hearing a straight version of this beautiful ballad makes you realise the comic genius of Laurel and Hardy who still gave the song the respect it deserved. Little Miss Dynamite lighting the fuse which would blow her career into superstardom. Terrific!

    Brenda Lee is amazing, a fully mature voice, but coming from a cute kid. She's like Country Musics answer to Rose Marie.

      True! Rose Marie had deep contralto voice and could do that throaty sound like Brenda. The other one that comes to mind is Mavis Staples who sort of went unnoticed as a result of being in a group.

      +cluny Don Hicks uses 1957 because it is the date of this video, but, actually, Brenda was on the radio in Atlanta in 1951 at age 6. Most of those listed do not go back that far. Fats was active in '51, but he has not performed in years.

    "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" was a popular novel in 1908 which inspired this popular song in 1913. There were also various stage and screen adaptations. The story is about a Hatfield-McCoy type feud with an outsider falling in love with "June Tolliver". The song's lyrics ("June - like the mountains I'm blue") are faithful to the character name in original novel.

    So your saying she is 13 years old here?

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  2 года назад

      12 yrs old. She was born in December, so it is usually better to think of her birth year as 1945 instead of '44. So 57-45 = 12.

    In this clip, I can hear similarities between Brenda's voice and Jean Shepard

    • @MostlyBrenda
      @MostlyBrenda  6 лет назад +1

      It's probably the accent. Brenda was living in Springfield, Mo, not far from where Shepard grew up in Oklahoma. Brenda admits to being a bit of a chameleon in that regard. She sings in several languages and tends to sound like the area of the country she is in.

      I can recall kids who had big voices, but Brenda, uniquely, had an amazing interpretive skill. She could hear a song and sing it back to you in her own way. Her covers of old songs sound completely different than the originals.

      True. We do have the whole show here: ruclips.net/video/vfOR6laeVTo/видео.html . I never extracted Dynamite as a separate video, but it does give me an idea for some sort of a compilation.

    Brenda must have been around thirteen in this clip yet she is dressed like an eight year old...

      She was 12, but so small that her wardrobe was limited. Later on, they employed a seamstress.

      it was the bible belt and highly controlled her dress and songs. A quick note of then compared to now. Leanne Rimes did "blue" biggest hit of the decade recorded at 12--released at age 13 but was portrayed as the biggest pedophile sex symbol of the century to the glee of the country music industry and even Bill Mack who thumps the bible alive and well to this day in Texas. The video was lustily done and the final scene was the cover of the dvd movie "Lolita" showing her peering out over her sunglasses. So a few decades later from Brenda Lee the girls are marketed as the biggest sex objects of the century at age 12-13--while in the news someone gets caught with a 16 year old and gets life in prison and commits suicide or killed in prison. This country we live in now is corrupt and a septic tank

      Brenda Lee was protected by the mother and was not allowed to be alone or kiss a boy or to be in a car with boy until age 18.. We thus have these icons now to look at but today we have sluts and whores

    It’s just a lovely, rambling cowboy song. Laurel and Hardy did it no favours.
