  • When it comes to conversations on race and racism, white racial identity and experiences are rarely centered. Instead, it is treated as “normal,” “universal,” and “or un-discussable”. With the ever changing racial makeup of this country and the recent election, conversations around race, racism and allyhood are becoming more important. This conversation explores white racial identity, whether one’s experience is centered around ally-ship, colorblindness, or the belief that race is not a significant factor in people’s lives.

      Depends on the context. White as was explained in the video was a label that white people created and chose for themselves. The reasons and actions taken to create a category of people influence the meaning of the word and their identity.
      White was created to bund a group of various ethnic Europeans together in ideals and goals. You can't be a member of a group and function as a complete individual there is give and take.
      No people are homogeneous but people are often socialized in similar manners depending on their identities. When we speak to white people we often see them draw on similar information, arguments and feelings because they have had similar experiences and education.
      It's not demonizing but simply calling attention to the ways in which we are taught.

      @Ellisar Atranimus
      If you say so. Do you think slaves knew more about the daily lives of plantation owners or vice versa?
      Why do you think this is?
      Is it as important in our society to know the works of Malcolm X and Dubois as it is to learn about Shakespeare and einstein?
      How do we evaluate and measure the impact of a culture without being critical. White culture has historically been left uncriticized in the public sphere. All other cultures were subjected to racial stereotypes by white culture...
      It is completely fair to say that Whiteness comes with ideologies. The reason we have a racial category called white is to elevate some people above others.
      I would suggest an actual reading of history and study into these issues. Knee jerk reactions, dismissal and personal upset are not helpful.
      Nobody is advocating for harming the white race (or if they are they should be condemned) we are simply looking at how history could be so cyclical from slavery up until at least the 1960's.
      How else could you convince all people who share one physical characteristic to make murder of people who do not have that characteristic a public spectacle?
      Lastly, I appreciate your response but I feel that you might be taking the work (about groups ) a bit personally. White people are subject to the same problems as we all are but being told that your problems are the exact opposite for 200 years has an effect. We can't trust the majority of white people to see the writing on the wall when it comes to race and imo it's because all writing they are likely to read on the topic comes from their own Authorship.
      In short trust must be earned and wisdom gained to have an equitable conversation.

      Rabbittavo If a group of white people are being referred to, because they share a different / specific piece of information, then aren’t they being referred to by that piece of information and not race? Also, no living white people gave themself the label white. Obviously, we were born into it. Isn’t it more logical that education and experience are more defined by income? Poor white or black people in section 8 homes have VERY different experiences than rich white or black people who go to private schools, gated communities, etc. I’m not trying to deny things like police brutality, institutionalized racism, etc. I’m genuinely curious.

      That is not the same as racism. There was no scientific basis drawn for cultural or rival differences. Within pre- colonial Africa there was not a skin color basis with which to determine who got resources. The tribal conflicts didn't extend to the entire globe and force people across the Atlantic.

      THEN followed up by assumptions that place you as hypothetically superior, and all-in-one erase you of any accountability of harming others, all in one go. Also lies about the context of your praise of Europeans, again.
      This video on white supremacy entitled hatred and accountability, was made for you. And this post defending this racist discriminatory false comparison that insults people of color in comparison to white people. just proves why this talk is needed - white supremacy violence is still celebrated, excused, justified not mourned, and embraced as a large factor of white peoples identity. Maybe if you have a culture outside of violence, you wont feel like anti-hate speeches are anti-you speeches.

      "Irrelevant....."
      The reason for discrimination absolutely matters. The basis of skin color have ramifications into our modern day and the pseudo-scientific support gave it legs.
      "Africans were far worse..." we actually have accounts of slavery in Africa and most historians agree that African slavery was not as bad as chattel slavery in the west. Africans also did not begin the slave trade or spread the idea that captured slaves were animals. Could you provide primary sources for this?
      "If given the chance" Africans had the chance. The idea of global domination was driven by Europe's scarce resources and terrible climate. Africa didn't have that problem. Again assuming that all cultures would operate like Europeans is eurocentric.
      Other places ended the trade of slaves as well. Not to mention places that had no slave trade.
      Once ended the European empire and the west still used every measure at their disposal to extract wealth from black populations. The windrush scandal was only a few years ago.

    • @Rabbittavo
      @Rabbittavo 4 года назад +3

      @Ellisar Atranimus
      To try and address your other points.
      England participated in colonialism after slavery was abolished. It was also not the first/only place to abolish or refuse to participate in slavery. Mexico fought a war to end the practice after the English expanded it in their territories.
      You are judged by your own actions. Nobody accused you of owning slaves, but the entirety of the white race has benefited from the exploitation of those deemed non white. The only reason for such categories is the unequal distribution of resources and you have been socialized into participating.
      "Any notion..." so you are the real victim here lol.
      Racism is not simply a notion of shame or guilt but a very real outcome for those who endure it. Suggesting that the world is just supposed to exist with people of darker skin colors at the bottom in such obvious metrics is to hint that white supremacy is a natural feature and that the past has nothing to do with the future.
      I feel like you have an inkling of this and are seeking to defend yourself.
      Instead of absolving yourself why not be a positive force?
      I also agree that white culture idolizes a certain ruthlessness that shouldn't be praised. All cultures do not operate the same.

      100% exactly what they are saying. Treat people how you want to be treated. And if white supremacists cannot stop being violent and racist, these talks will continue. The fact that you as a white man felt this anti-white supremacy talk was about you, shows that you identify it heavily with your own identity. I think many white Americans do. That’s why this speech exists. White supremacy is well and alive as a core part of white American identity. If you didn't identify with this violence, you wouldn't feel like it was about you. If you are someone who doesn't like hatred and violence, call it out like they are doing. Don’t cover up the acknowledgement of this violence..that is protecting white supremacy...and that speaks its own volumes.

    I'm a more conservative thinker, and I have some points of disagreement here, but I think I can meet one point of this conversation so far halfway (I'm at 41:44); Tia seems to suggest that over-emphasizing a victimhood mentality in regards to discussing racial topics is harmful. I agree. Perhaps the solution to rising above the victimhood mentality of current culture is where we might disagree. I don't know; I'm trying to be open-minded.

    • @nickmitchell5568
      @nickmitchell5568 5 лет назад

      Another point of agreement. Tia emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility and not pointing the finger at everyone else. Very different from most college age SJW types. Well done.
      Most of my disagreements are coming from the white guys here; one of them says the following (paraphrase): in order to combat racism, you have to "challenge the fundamental narrative of this country"; I disagree. The fundamental narrative of this country, focusing on the rights of the individual, and the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the same principles that made slavery seem absurd in the first place.
      No other nations in the history of humanity abolished slavery until the post-enlightenment west, and it was due to these principles.
      That's the kicker. That's my primary disagreement with any topic of race. I can even agree to certain notions of systematic racism, but the idea that everything to do with our nation, and by extension, the west, is fundamentally racist is where I balk.
      The fundamental nature of every institution is to lean towards tyranny and corruption, which is precisely why the founding fathers, think of them what you will, distrusted their own wills to seek power, hence establishing checks and balances.
      This country has been a work in progress from the start, and maybe I hear this wrong, but whenever more leftist thinkers speak of the problems in this country and in western civilization, they seem to only focus on the negatives, and never the positive aspects of the west.

      Ah. No such thing as an individual. Damn. it's going down hill. You had me at normative workings of the culture. There are always normative workings of the culture; there is definitely a need to address the needs of the displaced members of society, but the answer is not to remove the idea of the individual from the scene.
      Perhaps he's criticizing radical individualism, but we might differ in opinion on what that means.

    • @Rabbittavo
      @Rabbittavo 4 года назад +4

      I think your conception of the argument is being completely influenced by who you are.
      Think about what it means to have a nation founded on the idea of perpetual slavery. How do you keep an economy running as well as you did when you had free labor?
      Imo Sharecropping then chinese factories.
      I encourage you read black authors on the subject.
      People still do not have equal access to the life liberty and pursuit of happiness claimed.
      I would start by reading history of American slavery, works by authors like Carter g. Woodson, frederick Douglass, and W.e.b Dubois. I'd then move on to sharecropping, reconstruction and the lynching era
      Black like me, ida. B wells, etc
      Then I'd read up on the great migration (1920's)
      Then the harlem renaissance.
      Jim crow/Civil rights
      Black power
      And today.
      Those are most of the large arcs to the story.
      Some subjects to cross reference with the time period might be.
      Black disenfranchisement
      How x effected black culture
      How x effected white culture
      Race laws
      Race and social history
      Black inventors
      Black firsts
      Black revolutionary thought
      Black art in x time
      White response to x
      Segregation
      Housing/red lining
      Compensation
      Of course there is more but this research alone would take a lot of investment. I don't think it is fair to have the conversation if you haven't done comparable work though.

    let me enlighten everybody once and for all:
    White people have no racial responsibility that other races don't also have.
    The ONE responsibility we ALL have as HUMANS regardless of race, is to avoid racists in day to day life, and advocate for racial equality.
    A white person has to avoid walking into places full of people of other races who hate white people.
    A non-white person has to avoid walking into places full of people of other races who hate their race.
    It REALLY isn't difficult to understand... everyone has the same duty to advocate against racism, and all races of people have to deal with racism.
    How much is irrelevant. Racism is bad regardless of who it happens to, who is being racist, and how much/how little its happening.
    This is what people mean when they say they "don't see race"... Obviously race exists, but it shouldn't matter in regards to anything, there are FAR more important things you can judge another person with, such as how creative, kind, passionate, ambitious, strong minded, empathetic, generous, intelligent, honorable, the list goes on.

I said that was nice but a few seconds later she took off as if I was racist towards her. Never in a million years I';m not Racist and never will be either. put myself to wonder was she abused by others of her colour. I felt uneasy towards the way she reacted by running off. but it had shown me that not Just white people but Pakistan the new generation can be Racist too towards black people and I find the most disturbing. will it ever change No Not in a million will that ever happen in our world Racism will go on and on. so sad to here to here that too. to get on with your brothers and

    Traditionally, whites are not supposed to have a "racial identity." We are (or rather, were) supposed to be "color blind," to not see race. The prerogative of seeing and being racial was reserved to oppressed groups like Black People and Native Americans. Now, all of that has changed. Whites are expected to overcome their universal "racism" (here interpreted broadly as referring to any inner feelings of nervousness or stereotypical thinking, and not just actual discrimination or prejudice as traditionally defined). So what kind of "white racial identity" do they want us to assume? What kind of responsibility are we to assume? And, most importantly, when is this entire racial divide "solved?" These are questions that anti-racism fails to give any concrete answers to because, likely, there aren't any. Anti-racism, as Black academician John McWhorter said in more or less these words, is a quasi-religion with no real solutions.

There's a wide swath of perspective to absorb.... your only point of reference being McWhorter speaks volumes regarding your real "confusion".

    I’m grateful for this and other conversations like this, that are here on YT and elsewhere, because I’m learning a great deal about my own racism from them. It’s an illuminating, paradigm-shifting experience over the last few years, to understand myself and my invisible programming better. We shouldn’t be afraid of this. It frees one to have more options and helps to heal some aspects of self that are not whole, and which our culture, if not fully examined, will prevent us from even noticing the roots of. One small but potent aspect of this for me has been learning more about the history of racist concepts. What that has done is to illuminate for me where many of my own assumptions about who I am, and what is true about life, the universe, and everything, are actually subtly rooted in these ideologies from which racist ideas also drew support. Assumptions drawn from my cultural milieu as I grew up, which have been almost completely invisible to me, and which pervade almost every aspect of my life, but which are deeply entangled with the racism that also pervades me and my world. When you see the linkages, the reasons and motivations behind the ideas themselves, and the people who gave them life and vitality, you start to have options.

    This is always one sided. How about you discuss interracial crime stats. And "systemic" racism can be due to other factors besides "racism". It could have to do with culture or behavioral traits that occur more frequently among some groups than others. For instance, why do Asians(East or Indian) tend to succeed more in the US than any other racial group? Is that because of systemic racism...that somehow favors them?

      oaxacachaka that’s east to answer. The same reason why Jews during the hitler days had a valid reason to feel like their plight should be favored of the hitlers party. Should we then give favor the oppressors ...? If yes. I’ll give you a nice dopamine hit and listen to how you explain your comment without changing the subject 😏

      discussing the shame behind white supremacy, is a good way to dismantle it. Violence and hatred need to be labelled and called out, not comfortably protected in silence.
