There was once the possibility for Rachmaninoff of recording all 32 Beethoven sonatas for Decca. Unfortunately, the negotiations were unsuccessful. The few recordings of Rachmaninoff playing Beethoven reminds us of the treasure we lost.
Thank you for uploading this amazing performance in one video! It may be idiosyncratic and not without errors, but it will always be my favourite of this work...
Rachmaninov was not a confident man but listening to this legendary recording just shows for me he was the best pianist of his time even though he wouldn't admit too it.I think he had a little extra than the likes of Horowitz and Rubinstein (legends in their own right)We will never know how he would have compared to Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin to name a few from the un recorded past but for me he was the best. This was probably his best recording. Amazing and Grade A
Horowitz, who was Rachmaninoff's friend and collaborator, plainly said that Rachmaninoff was the best pianist. Rachmaninoff said that Hoffmann was best, but of course, Rachmaninoff as the gentleman that he was, would never have bragged about himself. I agree with Horowitz's assessment.
Rachmaninoff was of the era of great pianists where there was great freedom and fluidity in their playing. As with all pianists there are parts of their playing I really love, but other pianists I disagree with or wholly loath. In this era of the recording studio, pianists were plagued with having to fit their performance into an allotted time-frame: within the studio where the pianist was playing there was a ball on a frame where it slid down showing how much time was left!! This is the only reason I can see as to why Rachmaninoff played so extremely fast in some sections!
To think that him playing Schumann in 1929 is like us playing Rachmaninov today
Incredible how people can write about genius some worth stuff. Best recording of Shuman carnaval ever! Allso best Pianist ever!
Schumann and Rachmaninoff...oh mio Dio!!!!!!
Incomparable rendition ! Personal, full of contrasts!

Trop fort 💪
He showed us the truest path into the piano music of Schumann forever.
Best version of carnaval ever.
1:19-1:23 : Rachmaninov's typical art in decreasing a tempo. Divine ! tempo in the Finale is insane too...
15:51 Rach's Paganini jumps are just crazy!
With his hands? They aren't even jumps, but mere octaves to him xD
@ yes but jumps in our terms lol
No words... Just ♥ ♥ ♥

Agreed. Listen to his Tchaikovsky’s November (troika), and his schumanns spinning song
Will do thanks

Браво! Браво! Браво!
Mistakes and all, I enjoy hearing him play this more than any of his own works. Thank you, Валерий Айвазян, for sharing this with us.
Nur ein großer Komponist kann so kongenial interpretieren!

ГЕНИИ. ШУМАН И РАХМАНИНОВ.
I can hear the archetype of the peculiar phrasing of Horowitz and Pletnev here and there!
hard af
insane tempo....too fast for my taste...but impressive.
(sergei rachmaninoff plays)..
The worst mistake I have ever heard him make, playing the last part at that tempo.
