trade school is 100x better i’m 17 years old in my last year of high school i’ve been working for 3 years with a program from my school. i go to school for 6 days for academics and then i work a HVAC job the next 6 days. i’m being paid wayyyyyy above minimum wage and i got all my certifications. i still planing on going to a community college so i can get a degree with little to none debt
This job is hard. Takes a while to physically get used to lots of climbing, hauling tools, hauling parts, working in direct sunlight. If you have a record it complicates things even more. It’s also being turned into one of those jobs where you need 3-5 years of experience but nobody will give you a job. I’m being more of a realist than an optimist and putting my experience out there.
As a Union HVAC Tech, I can say that no non-union HVAC Techs call themselves “Refrigeration Pipefitters”, “Reefer Hands”, etc. It’s time for all of the Union Locals to acknowledge this and to call us what we really are.
