As someone who's been on and off a paid Pluralsight subscriber for a couple years, I gotta say that what this guy offers for free on RUclips is just amazing. As a matter of fact, Pluralsight got nothing on this channel. The only difference is that Pluralsight offers a more structured program, but other than that, this guy understanding and how well he's able to convey his knowledge is spot on. This is content he should be charging money for. It's that good.
It's May 26, 2020.COVID 19, quarantine in Argentina! I never leave comments in videos, I've been trying to learn C4D, and I watched the first 20 minutes and I decided to log in just to say Thank you! Really nice and clear, a clear english, and so far, very useful! To prevent mistakes is the best way to learn. I will watch the rest! Thank you again!! Gracias!!
Found this to be a really great explanation of modelling in c4d. I liked the amount of detail you went through and showed how to overcome some difficult polygons, etc. The level at which you went through is very thorough and very beneficial to anyone beginning modelling. It sets up a really good foundation for new users to keep in mind with future modelling. The length of the video is really good imo. The issue with a lot of tutorials from others is they rush details or very briefly cover something. They also make mistakes due to the rushed nature of them and you'll find sometimes they undo 5 or 6 steps, which is frustrating. Your tutorial is truly excellent, showing in real-time the issues one can encounter. I mostly prefer book tutorials, except they can be restricted with the amount of detail they can go into, so a lot of time can be spent searching the help guide on how certain tools or actions were performed. This video, on this topic is excellent. Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you so much, Dave! I'm happy you liked the video. I wanted to show some practical real-world advice and techniques to help beginners. I tend to make my videos long but I want to be clear and thorough. I am always trying to balance Clear and concise with thorough explanations. I'm a work in progress :)
Hey Michael, thank you so much for taking your time with all these tutorials. I'm trying to go into C4d with the mindset of learning first before rushing in and creating bad habits, which is something I've done with Premiere and After Effects. Your videos force me to take a step back and listen, so thank you :)
can't thank you enough, Sir. I wish you the best. this is the best C4D channel on RUclips ever. you And EJ Hassenfratz are the best C$D artists there. please don't stop.
This an awesome tutorial on 3D modeling in Cinema 4D. You taught me more than you'll realize to do 3D character modeling. Please don't be hard on yourself on what you've accomplished. This tutorial is a very big blessing. Thank you so much.
I got my model finished and im surprised that it actually worked! Going to model with some blueprint soon! Thanks for this Video it really helped. Thanks!
Thank you. the best i've see and have learned a lot. please make more, don't worry about he length because you go through many menus, tools and technics so it takes time. love it!
Hi, thanks for taking the time to make this videos. You are a great help! My question is... Why do it this way that takes so much time and not just import the lines from illustrator and just do an EXTRUDE? That has always been my question!
Great question. You certainly can use illustrator or splines for very basic modeling. And in some cases it would that would work just fine. But you quickly learn, when modeling, that using illustrator and extrude object will become extremely limited in what you can model. You will not be able to use deformers because the way the Extrude object makes the cap. The mesh will also become a mess under sub-division. UV mapping will become a nightmare when adding textures. Illustrator and the extrude object can only do the most basic models. The example I made in the video isn't the best and you could use the Illustrator and extrude object method. I think I will redo the video with a better example and more concise video. Thanks for the comment!
@@MichaelBalchaitis Thank you so much for helping us understand this because it's very easy to do the pen tool and stuff which we beginners mistake as easy but then it's gets messy when we apply deformers Thankss
Thanks for putting this together man. I use a lot of the online training services like Lynda and Pluralsight to learn software like Cinema 4D, but not many of them go into the basics of modeling like this. Great job.
Excellent tutorial, clean and concise (just like the model!). Got no problem with it taking longer than you hoped, that's kinda par for the course. This is the first video of yours I've seen, looking forward to watching the rest.
Mike, thank you so much for your work. Digging all your C4D modeling tips, one by one. I´ve got so confused with the massive numbers of tutorials online and yours were the clearest and most didactic by far. I´ve some basic doubts about a personal project and I´ll be so glad if you could give and idea on how to handle those issues. How can I reach you? Best, Mario
Hello Michael, I really appreciate your tutorial and I loved it, I just have one question. This video concerning modeling, does this also applies to 3d max. Cause I'm still confuse what software I will purchase in the future for my architectural project.
Good video. Do you have tips for avoiding splitted points? I'm modeling a car in c4d and repeatedly I have to rectangle select certain points and then move them. Because intersecting points are on each other but not connected.
In your video you are manually ctrl cloning edges. What if I wanted to speed it up by adding a flat square with segments and borders connecting to it. Is that faster and cleaner?
Thank you! For the specific ref. file you can download here: astronomic3d.com/c4d-scene-files/0045whatisthebestwaytolearnmodelingincinema4d I am currently making a section on my website to download free reference files. In some cases yes, you can use those tools. But more advanced modeling requires advanced techniques. After a while with modeling those tools become very limiting.
wow... appreciate your efforts on the importance of quads... from your reference pic I would have traced the edges with a spline and then added cylinders to the holes and use the Boole to make the holes... also you'd think with the multitude of tools C4D has it would have some type of tool to create an even amount of quads to accomplish what you gad to go through.
well i started to watching at normal speed, then i switch to 1,25 after that 1,5 and at that point speed was fine ;D, nice vid but 1h 30min isnt long but its too long for this kind of vid where there isnt that much informations, but still enjoyed watching it
Good tut for beginners, a little stretched sometimes...but i have to note that you don’t bring transparency down but up in order to dim the picture in the background. Little logical mistake. ;D ...nevermind
Thank you. Yeah, I have to be more concise with these videos. You are right I think I was thinking opacity in photoshop. What I said sounds confusing. I will make a note of that for future videos. Thanks.
Hi, Make sure to have "Auto Weld" Checked. So go to your Polygon Pen tool. Then attributes manager. Then Third option from the top. Underneath Quad Strip mode.
You can save 1 hour of your life plus another couple hours of work simply doing with Photoshop or Illustrator what he starts doing at 00:26. Create a shape like that with the pen tool or combining shapes and then extrude the layer from the Photoshop's 3D menu as Postcard. Voila'. 5-10 minutes job, depends on how good you are with the pen tool.
You idiot that's what he is explain, you can do the same with the pen tool in c4d but the issue is that you can deform those shapes the way you want. Atleast listen to what he's saying
Modeling itself is actually way too much for most people, if you want to do it properly and learn the fundamentals. If you'r not patient or lacking the fundamentals, you'll produce a mess every time.
Good point Rick. I was trying to get across that there is a correct way to go about modeling that I feel beginner modelers need to hear. But maybe I didn't do a great job plus it's an overly long video.

can we draw in c4d with pen tool as we can in illustrator? "clicking last point make that corner thing"?
Yes, absolutely. You can use one of the orthographic views and use a reference. Try using the snap feature to keep lines straight.
Great video tutorials
thank you very much
