I lived in the bush on an off for over 20 years. Last 3 years until 2021 in vic in the NE and later SW.
People thought I was wierd. Even guys i grew up with who know I'm not. I was just down on my luck at the time.
Purely because they couldn't do it and its not common?
So heres the headspace of living alone in the bush.
Not only are you totally up against hardcore cold, wet, hot, dry and all weather extremeties, your also vulnerable.
No one will hear you scream out in the bush unless your lucky. So your constantly, listening, checking for tracks and covering your own.
    You've gotta remember, its illegal.
So the rangers are out there looking for squatters like me and the button man.
Depending on who you are, you either lose your marbles and end up like button man or you don't.
    Hope this puts into perspective.
    Btw.
I have a unit now through department of housing, doing well.
Also got into gold prospecting while I was living rough and I love doing that still.

I'm disheartened by all this fear surrounding the Button Man. I think people just don't understand the reclusive mindset of a person like him. The thousand mile stare is incomprehensible to many but it is something I possess, so it is relatable to me. I spent a few years homeless in regional areas. There are a lot of resourceful people living in vehicles that have regular migration routes. They are people that have checked out of mainstream society because it has not worked for them. The majority of them are not dangerous. They recognise their own kind and you can talk to them if you know the unwritten rules of the liminal population of Australia. From what I heard, the Button Man co-operate with the police and they think he isn't responsible for the disappearances. If they did, they'd take him into custody.

Buttons is probably a veteran who can’t stand people. He would know who’s around so if you think you can blame him or worse dump a body out there, you’ll have buttons watching,
Here’s an idea, next time you go up there , leave a warm jacket, or sleeping bag or non perishable food. Label it Buttons, and then leave him the hell alone…..
After all, it’s humans that he’s getting away from…..
People always judging people, makes me sick.

I remember years ago. I worked for a local council. Part of our job. was Clearing fire trails. And in winter months back burning.
We would be in the bush all hours of the night. Back burning. One night I had my hose
And was wetting down an area. When all of a sudden. Some guy I’ve never seen before was standing beside me. I never heard him come. Or saw him leave. He was wearing white collar long sleeve shirt. And grey trousers. With black leather shoes. He said how’s it going. He didn’t have a single mark of burnt charcoal on him. He was clean.
I was wearing white overalls and they were dirty and covered with charcoal. From sticks.

That's creepy af and now that you have said about seeing him in Erica, and Walhalla (about 30 or so mins away from where I live) I've just had a flashback of when I was at Tyers Wirilda river about 16 or 17 years ago with a couple of mates for a swim and we cooked some snags on the BBQs provided (After cleaning the fuck out of them of course!) And as soon as I started packing our stuff up this hermit looking guy (about 55 or 60) just appeared out of no where and came from the general direction of where there is no track or anything and started walking up in our direction after I said to my mates that if no one wants the left overs, I'm going to toss them so the birds can have a feed. He gave me goosebumps the way he just blended into the bush and we didn't notice him until he was 10ft away from us (the bushline was about 30metres away) He was in dirty tattered clothes with no shoes on and I can't recall excactly what he mumbled but it was something along the lines of giving him the left overs. I said no worries and put them on the bench and I said are you ok mate, where did you come from? to which he completely ignored me. I offered him a can of soft drink to which he snatched it from my hands pretty quick. we got the feeling that he'd been watching us and also that we weren't welcome. Scary for a 20 year old girl at the time too!! He just walked back into the tree line and disappeared into the surroundings. After hearing these descriptions and areas of where he's been spotted, I feel that this dude was most likely button man for sure.

Of course people do get lost and confused and die by natural causes and whatnot, but it seems like a very large number of people seem to disappear off the face of the Earth when they visit these National Parks and unfortunately their friends and family never get any answers as to what actually happened to them. This is just made by someone who has no idea of the Victorian or Australian bush. The maker 'shadow matter' has put shots of 'desert' scub and European forests. And a wide shot of a totally European or US forest. Australia does not have deciduous trees, so we get no autumrn colour. And the scrub shown is totally wrong for the area around Mansfield / and hight country where Button man lives or lives. Some shots show the escarpment of Blue mountains... about 1000 km north! Victorian high country looks nothing like that! Anyway, getting that stuff wrong indicates a whole lot of other stuff is likely to be wrong or misinformed too. ( just saying).

The description of the way he behaves, he seems to be patrolling his area and checking what goes on so he stops by at people's camps to have a chat. He's doing it at night to protect himself. If he needs to disappear to protect himself, he can melt away quickly and the people visiting the area won't know the area well enough to pursue him in the darkness if they want to do him harm.
