    I've heard, back in 2009, IDF tankers refer to the mk4 as "the hotel" due to it's roominess.

  • @stevestruthers6180
    @stevestruthers6180 11 лет назад +48

    The roomy turret of the Merkava was probably inspired by the old British-designed and built Centurion tank, which was known to be quite roomy, and which was operated by the IDF in large numbers for several decades. While American tanks like the M60 and the M1 also gave the nod towards increased crew space, and the IDF also operated the M60 in large numbers, neither of these two tanks are particularly roomy.
    The bottom line is that a roomier turret allows for better overall ergonomics and a lot less crew fatigue, which is critical on the battlefield when the tank has been operating under closed hatches for 36-plus hours.

    If you want to keep ammo in bustle you have to increase the size of the turret. Thats why Abrams turret is so huge. And increasing turret for bustle gives "secondary effect": more space for the crew.

    *To all the Kornet fanboys:*
    During the fighting between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in the summer of 2014, of the 15 anti-tank missiles which launched on Israeli tanks that were intercepted by the Israeli active protection system "Trophy", most were of the Kornet type. In some cases the Kornet launchers were destroyed after the "Trophy" system had detected the launch and directed the tank's main gun to the launcher position.

    If Jordan goes to war with Israel, they will use the RPG-32 that penetrated a meter of chobham-style multi-layer armor in testings. It was designed to even get through active protection systems such as Iron Fist, Trophy, Arena, Drozd1/2. Not trying to bag any tank, but anti-tank rounds are VERY powerful today.
    As for what tank is the best? I honestly doubt that T-90 or late versions of T-80 are in any way inferior to ANY NATO tank. With missiles and over 4km shot range its a VERY strong foe

    Merkava Mk4 uses German MB833 1500 hp diesel. It is considered the best tank engine and it is one of the smallest. There are no real alternatives Israel can get.
    Reducing hull will reduce the ammo. Plus it will make impossible to carry infantrly. All this does not worth 10 mm of additional side armor.

    If in 1985 there was a US vs USSR war, USA would lose. At that time, US APFSDS were neutralised by ERA Kotankt 5, Flankers and Fulcrums outclassed F-15s and F-16s kinematically and in avionics, soviet SA-10 were more then capable of taking out B-1 and even B-2 thanks to low-freq radars that brought the missile close enough for SAM to see it. T-80 and T-72 were armed with ATGMs. Finally against the US navy, they use Backfire-Cs, Bears and Blackjacks with Supersonic anti-ship missiles

    What exactly went wrong in 2006? (Don't waste my time by saying it was the lack of Trophy. I know that if 2006 was repeated today, Israeli tank losses would be much smaller). I thought the enemies of Israel had nothing to counter Merkavas with except Milan, AT-13 Metis, AT-14 Kornet and RPG-29 Vampir. All of those, are extremely formidable even for modern anti-tank weapons but I thought almost nothing could penetrate the modular/sloped composite armor of Merkava at least not from the front.

    @redreaper-xe6so 12 лет назад

    Wow, are you wrong or what?
    PTURs? You mean the PTRD, an obsolete antitank rifle that can't penetrate even an MRAP?
    An RPG7 can't pen a Chal2, nor an Abrams except a few very tiny (3in or less) weak spots. And no challenger 2 has been "disabled" and no crew member injured by a "300 dolar rpg round". It was an RPG29, which is expensive and similar to a US AT4, hit through a small weak spot in the lower hull, and it blew off two toes. And Chal2s have taken hundreds of RPGs w/o effect.

    The Merkava held up its end in the '06 war. What sucked was the complete abandonment of any coherent tactics. They were sent stop-start, willy-nilly into a ridiculously narrow, twisting ravine.
    It was a war run by dickless politicians, not soldiers. Concentrated Vietnam on steroids. It's a wonder only a handful were knocked out. Watching those clips of them stumbling and bumbling about aimlessly in that shooting gallery made me embarrassed for them.

  • @gorf1
    @gorf1  15 лет назад

    Making tank smaller is not just decreasing comfort, but also reducing ammo, gun elevation/depression angles and so on. Also if you reduce the size of the tank leaving it in same weight then cross-country ability will reduce. Finally the thickness of frontal armor is usually enough while making sides 10% more will hardly help - 100 mm or 110 mm. It wont save you against Kornet with 1000 mm of penetration.

    Its not an entirley bad thing, i mean the centurion was a great tank, but it was develpoed in 1945. I mean its your opinion that the merkava should be No.2. I just disagree that its better then the challanger 2 or the leopard.

    This failed in operations against Hezbalah in Southern Lebanon on 2006 against Russian made ATGM like Kornet missiles & several tankers have been killed during that war .

      ***** Don't talk about other religion , we discuss about this tank operations through out war , Israeli official admit their tank vulnerabilities against current threat and because that new counter measure adopted (Trophy System ) .
      The Merkava's composite armor consists of many thin spaced sandwich plates, which is a common design for protection against HEAT warheads. However the lack of a thick coverplate providing additional protection against KE, detonating warheads before they enter the composite armor and providing additional structural support causes some issues not found on other tanks.

      By the way I don't have any problem with Jews & Israeli people ... Simply we're human

      I mean knocking out 5 Main battle tanks in a war between a conventional military force
      and between a guerrilla military force is not a feat when guerilla warfare in CQB and mountainous area of lebanon will give the advantage to lebanon but it didn't , israel pushed to the litany river.

    In fact in most of cases penetration did not led to death of any crewmen. This is due to Merkava's composition. On the other hand penetration of cramped Russian tanks leads to death of all the crew usualy.

    They shoud becouse they did not do soo good against soviet time PTURs .You can make a tanks as armored and heavy as you like and fit it whit all kinds of counter measures, but thire will allways be cheaper infantry anti-tank weaponst to take them out (a lot cheaper than the tanks they are destroyng) . Hell a 300 dolar RPG round can pierce a 6,7 milion dolar Chalenger 2 tank front whit ERA (and it did disabling it and heavily injuring the driver ) scoring a mobility kill.

    I just lol at all those who put down the Merkava and praise Hezbollah... the closest thing Hezbollah got to a tank is a Toyota pickup truck with garbage plates as armor... additional reactive armor would include babies, and wondering civilians.

    >these fake facts you have 120 tanks hit 49 destroyed and rest damaged.
    49 destroyted tanks (with 4 crew in each) means 196 killed. Actual number of killed tankers was 30.
    >russia never had 100,000 tanks in ww2 the most tanks ever? built by ussr was95,000
    USSR started war with 23,000 tanks, during the war were built 103,170 + 13,400 recieved through Land Lease. By the end of the war USSR had about 46,000 tanks. Go figure.

    @parthsna Yeah. But hey, who isn't gonna vouch for their home country. I'd question why you wouldn't. Technology is a tool not a crutch. I'll take a well trained, well disciplined crew over the most high tech tank any day
