Every time I watch the Intro to Nina's show I get goosebumps because she is just so powerful, inspiring, and charismatic. Ugh we are so lucky to have her.
Remember when average people had the money to pay for American-made products that were better quality. These products were well-built and fixable, not just discarded to the land-fill and replaced with another cheap model that will last a year. Remember when there was such a thing as TV repair people fixing American made stuff that lasted 10 plus years? Or Rubbermaid stuff. We were proud to make great products like Rubbermaid. I watched a Frontline episode about Rubbermaid and how they were the gold standard of how a company should operate. They did everything right. They made a fantastic product that was functional and durable. Customers loved them, suppliers loved them, distributors loved them, workers loved them. Rubbermaid cost 25% more but lasted 3 times longer than other products and it was worth the money to buy American. And they treated their workers well...until Walmart destroyed them. When the price of rubber increased, Walmart demanded they hold prices firm and when Rubbermaid refused, Walmart pulled nearly all their products off the shelves. Rubbermaid is still out there, in name only, still making money off a reputation that is no longer backed by an outstanding product. If we did it once we can do it again. We can make America great again paying people enough to afford American made goods that keep proud people employed manufacturing value that as a country can be proud of and...afford to purchase ourselves. And we can support the environment by making stuff that isn't crowding the landfills by being made to break with 'planned obsolescence' and . Pay people a living wage and we can support our own economy and spiral up for a change, instead of the downward death spiral we have been on.
I saw that documentary too (Chinese imports, Walmart destroying Rubbermaid, US TV production going bust directly after a record year). - One of the promises of these trade deals was that the consumers would get cheaper goods (let's for a moment NOT CONSIDER the ethics of them being produced in sweatshops). CHEAP poducts - that are not worth the effort of repair - is exactely what we get. And despite those cheap goods - the COSTS OF LIVING for the low income people have NOT dropped (sure people have more shoes and garments since they have become cheaper (are people better dressed or live better with less worries ?), but the lion share of the budget of a regular family is housing, healthcare, education, - then transportation, food etc.. The first three have NOT become more affordable, on the contrary they were (partially) handed over to the for-profit players who extract money from the bottom to the higher income brackets. If you defund public education everyone who still CAN afford it somehow will send the kids elsewhere - and is forced to pay the tuition fee (= less disposable income for consumer good,s but a nice profitable niche for some special interests). Less taxes are paid (people earn less), big biz doesn't pay them anyway. so forget about funding good public services which would take the pressure of the family budgets (education, childcare, healthcare).. Disposable income (from wages) has has been stagnant for the mass of consumers, the manufacturers have merged, we have large overproduction capacities in industrial manufacturing worldwide. That is one of the reasons WHY we have planned obsolescence. The machines should last shorter, so that we have to buy new ones ever few years. Overproduction/not enough money in the pockets of consumers is why the people with money and Big Biz jump at the financial "markets" and real estate "investements". They are drowning in cash and it makes no sense to invest it in manufacturing (or services), there is not enough disposable income (on a global scale). Desire/demand yes, money: No. In the U.S. the gap between output and disposable income was for some time "closed" with consumer debt on the credit card. That is over. As long as labour costed more it made sense to make things more durable and fit for repair. I know the market for household appliances. A quality washing machine costed twice the price of (most of the) machines they throw at the market today, electronics enable a lot of "features" = programs and create the illusion of quality and performance. Enjoy them as long as the machine works. There is a good chance the first expensive repair will be due after 5 - 6 years. So expensive you will consider buying a new machine and have at least some warranty. Back in the day the machines easily lasted 12 years. And a repair would be well invested money. One could say: well half the price for half the life time - but the caluculation is incomplete, it comes with a hidden disadvantage: the cheap machines are produced with much lower wages, and likely they are produced with a higher degree of automation. That translates to: less wages paid for those who still have work and also more unemployment, since work time has not been reduced. It means: folks have less income to support the economy. A good deal for us (consumers/employees) would be: machines produced under good standards in good quality and sold at slightly lower prices (compared to price of the quality machines). that price advantage would be because of more automation, and less and larger manufacturing plants. OR increased wages because of the higher productivity and then sales prices stay the same. It does not matter that much WHERE the machines are produced, the workers of the other countries will have disposable income then and then can return the favor of importing goods. Imports from Canada or wealthy European countries or Japan were never the problem for the U.S. They all had a level playing field, if the Japanese were better in automotive they won that race fair and square - time for everybody else to improve their game. Which is exactely what Japan did for the automobile industry. They triggered improvement in many brands. But of course there is a limit for that kind of beneficial and "fair" competition. The other producers adapted to the Japanese challenge. The Japanese continued to have good cars but could not maintain their distinctive advantage over all other manufacturers. China is not better (technology, innovation, creativity), they just have the better dictatorship and the more desperate or unprotected workforce. And since they do not pay their workers enough and cut corners with environmental protection (that was the whole point of outsourcing with help of the trade deals) they (the Western companies who produce in China) MUST export a lot. Which is the function of those trade deals: Make sure no government (in the First World) can ever slap prohibitive tariffs on the sweatshop products. China has 1,2 bn people but they cannot consume the stuff they produce. They have the people = aspiring consumers - but not the disposable income (70 % of the Chinese are as poor as ever, despite the Chinese Economic Miracle) That means on top of losing jobs to outsourcing, we are robbed of our future customers for quality products that are still produced here. Plus all the environmental problems. After WW2 whenever there was an increase in productivity the workers would get a major part of that improvement in form of rising wages. (1947 - 1970 productivity plus 112 %, average wages (adjusted for inflation) plus 97 %). So average wages almost doubled, the entrepreneurs got an comparative advantage of 15 % out of the deal over 23 year. Libertarians and Republicans no doubt would dispute the "fairness" of that arrangement (the top income taxes were also very high 90 and later 70 - 60 % !) - but in ECONOMIC TERMS it worked fabulously. That built the middle class. And with the alway increasing wages the disposable income KEPT UP with the ever increasing/improved output of goods and services.
Customers are also driving this process too. They get use to the cheap products and buying things on the internet. Cheap products means no jobs and low wages.
Someone pointed out that it would not take that many independents in the Senate and the House to make a difference. It would take just enough to break the majority of the Dems and Repubs, to stop and force legislative compromise. So we need to be aware that change is possible in the hands of a few more brave citizens like Sanders (and Turner and Glover).
Be(ing) the change. Danny is a Bernie bro. WE got our wings from the progressive shove that Bernie provided, Now is the time and the time is NOW. Strike early and often while the iron is hot.. Don't make Bernie run to death before we stand up on own and fight back as he encourages us to do every day.
I like your attitude - both of you ! What is done to the afro/american people in the US today is outrageous - get organized big scale and raise up ... big scaele too !
I love Nina Turner. She should be Bernies VP. If Bernie doesnt run then NINA SHOULD RUN 2020! Nina and Tulsi would also make a great ticket. And make Robert Reich Secretary of Labor again!
i've heard idiots on the right describe Nina as a witch. I know that's not true. But if it were, consider me under her spell. THIRD PARTY TIME, NINA AND BERNIE!!!
I love you Nina!! Keep being strong and fighting the fight!! I'm with you all the way! i pray you choose to run for president in the 3 rd party!! If you do! i know you will win, i promise you, you will, i seen it in a vision. Please do it we need you, the world needs you! I love you!
WE THE PEOPLE have to be informed have to get involved have to start energizing the promise of tomorrow, for the sake of the babies, our lil ones who look to Us. When your at the end of your life. Will you be able to look at your children and say... Everyday after you (my children) were born, I tried to make sure that you could have a better life. Love,Commitment, Education. Stay Human, care , Get involved for the common good for all humanity. ✌💖🎼🎶🎵
Great stuff, looking forward to watching this show. Btw, her dress's design is genius, think about nature and the history of earth and life while looking at it. Beautiful
Talkin about the Black Diaspora, the Slave Trade was only the 2nd Great Diaspora. The 1st Diaspora was when all our ancestors came out of Africa and settled the world the 1st time. Africa is the Mother of all of us…
That third party could become corrupt as well, the answer is campaign to get money out of politics (starting by getting rid of Citizens United) and electing progressives who'll pledge to do that.
Most of the world is colour blind.we want justice for all people.i wish decent people would stick together instead of retreating into their own cliques.we can sort everything out with thoughtfulness when we rid ourselves from the mob who divides us
@ 8:44 Glover talks about how Baby Boomers (represented by Hillary and her supporters) say"Get over it!" Ironically when they were young rebellious Hippies were saying much the same thing as Millinials (this writer is somewhere between Hippies and Millennials age wise). Though when the Boomers "Squared Out" by the time of the Regan Era, the economy was still comparitively good and Global Warming was almost unkown. And the Boomer's parents' economy in America was the envy of the world. There is more Desperation behind the Millinials push for social change than with the Boomers/Hippies Marxist tinged juvinile rebellion. The dangers that can result from Environmental and Social are more like being in the cross hairs of a high powered rifle than the more "Fun" rebellion of the 1960s
It took "whites" and "colored" pulling together, Is, was and always will be an effort for humans to coexist. Eventually we WILL all look similar as our population becomes more homogenized and we cant tell one earthling from another. Or we can fry , freeze and wither on the vine.
But Danny if Bernie runs again w/in the Dem Party nothing will be different. Imagine if Nina ran. Or Tulsi. Imagine what the donors and the corporate media and the Dem Party itself would do to any one of them...we need a major third party, we've come to that point.
I'm more optimistic on what a truly progressive president could do, especially with the people behind him/her. Also it's way easier to elect progressives in the democratic party than to create a third party but no one says we can't try both things.
Nina's cool but why in the world would she say that capitalism won't go away in the USA? If the real existing hyper exploitative and ecocidal state capitalism we live under doesn't change then we're finished. If we want to live in a democracy then we must radically alter the economic system from the ground up if not remove it completely over time. Time's running out.
Nina is not going to leave the Democrat Party she's too comfortable getting pad's her on her back too much. We black people need our own political party flat and simple. the Democrat Party use the votes makes a lot of promises and kicks us to the curb
nothing against you Mr. Glover.... and I realize that the white establishment allowed you to make money in movies... but you need to wake up when it comes to black people and politics.
What a wonderful discussion. Thanks Nina and Danny!
GREAT JOB LOVE THIS!!!. Love you both Nina and Danny, lets keep our messages pushing out..

Oprah should interview Nina. I would like to see what Oprah has to say about Nina leading the next generation of strong black women.
two amazing people, love them both

Without a third party, equality and justice will never come to the current corrupt duopoly we currently have in the USA...the American oligarchy rules
