If you had watched all the way to the end of the video you would have heard that the person that put in the bolts came forward to the Bureau of Land Management in an attempt to correct his mistake

unfortunately I would have to agree. some of my favorite camping and hiking areas have been closed in the past few years, as much as it upsets me to lose that access I also find some comfort knowing it is less likely to be destroyed and will be around in the future for perhaps a better generation of people. it is a shame that a few bad folks ruin it for everyone else!
History isn’t just for academics. It is there for all to enjoy. What needs to happen instead of closing stuff off is educating and insuring everyone going out the knows what they can and cannot do and where they can or cannot do it. Sort of like a hunting license.

I read in some of state laws here that according to law and state Supreme court land owners cant be held accountable for trespassers getting injured on their property. Plus all private land here is posted no trespassing allowed by state law. But like you said they still try mostly against large landowners like natural gas and mining. And most of the time they win a settlement just to get rid of them. Accidents happen, most of the people that get hurt and get lawsuits are not careful are not aware of their surroundings and are novices with no training at riding, climbing, diving, or scuba. Also alot of them are the "hey yall watch this kinds" You are absolutely right though, people are terrified of being sued by people that if they told them to leave that they may get hurt the people would raise hell at them or just come back a later time and get messed up.

Many thousands of people walk right below such art and never notice it. It is easy for the people watching on the internet to see it because the camera focuses in on it from a convenient vantage point and we are told it is there

If you were to take a group of people under the petroglyphs without telling them that they were there each person would notice different things. Birds, flowers, clouds, cute girl, obnoxious cigarette smoker, cool rock formations. A rock climber is focused on handholds, possible anchor points etc. Some of the petroglyphs are barely discernable. The camera zoomed in from far away and told us what we were looking for. I once accidentally stepped on a kids sand castle at the beach one day. I felt bad. It was easy to see it after the fact but I didn't notice it beforehand. The man has stepped forward.

They should be climbing the crack and using trad gear for leave no trace. Nobody should ever have to bolt a crack climb Route. Period. If you can fit your fingers in a crack you can use trad gear. No bolts were necessary.
He is absolutely correct with his statement starting at 1:34. I started going to Moab many years ago when it was quaint, but now I don't even bother because it is ridiculously busy, especially with the proliferation of side by side ATV's.

I recently visited Joshua Tree area. Everything outside the actual park boundaries is trashed and destroyed. I was depressed just driving through and seeing the extent of the damage. I try to understand how someone could do these things but can't fathom why.
Seems stupid that they have NO SIGNS saying "Don't climb here" AND allow people to climb anywhere else around it, even mere feet away from it, but honestly expect nobody to step on it ever.....

A less historically damaging story, but there was a local route that was my white whale ... super hard, but super cool. I kept working at it and got closer to getting past the crux each time. I showed up one day and someone had chiseled open the one finger-hold at the crux so they could fit their whole hand into it. It's super-easy now, and nobody climbs it because there's no point. The destructive entitlement of some people blows my mind. I really wish I could find that person.

I’m happy the responsible party came forward. I’m also glad they kept his identity private. Hopefully he can help fix his mistake, doesn’t receive much punishment aside from community service to assist in repairs, and doesn’t receive much social backlash for his mistake. It was very honorable for him to take responsibility and it doesn’t seem like malice played a part in this situation
There have been some absolutely magnificent natural Rocks, Fossils and examples of Rock Art which are now Lost Forever because of the actions of a few Totally Selfish individuals. Some people have even videotaped themselves doing it and uploaded it to social media sites, just for their 15 Seconds of Fame.

Shortcuts. These folks have near zero common sense, even to pick up a book. Used to be that paper maps had *"Do's and Don'ts"* or suggestions for how to be a smart, safe, and considerate hiker, climber, and outdoors person. Next, was getting trained by a pro or old timer. Just because an app or map on your phone can help you find cool spots, does NOT mean that you know what you are doing. Some dude and his GF left LA for the the Mojave on a day trip and both ended dead.
I find it interesting...if I go out and carve/paint/mark things out in wilderness I am a vandal and criminal...yet a hundred or a thousand years later and those markings are protected and doing anything that might hurt them becomes the crime.
It looks like a beautiful place. I will now look into visiting there while people still can. Invite as many friends and family as possible to enjoy it before it goes away.

@@ratedRblazin420 Mount Rushmore is a known landmark. It wasn't maliciously done. There are ppl still able to rock climb in that area. The issue is where you put the anchors. Where that guy put the anchor was not on the art but close to it. If it was a real issue, then there should have been postings about it. I , mean the person who did it, admitted and said they would pay for any damages without even being charged. When does education come in then if we say ignorance is not an excuse. I am sorry but not everyone knows everything about everything out there. Anyways, the point I think they were honestly saying is not to get angry and viciously attack the person that did it. And maybe learn from all this and have them put up signs to where anchors are to go. So we learn to communicate instead of getting angry.

A less historically damaging story, but there was a local route that was my white whale ... super hard, but super cool. I kept working at it and got closer to getting past the crux each time. I showed up one day and someone had chiseled open the one finger-hold at the crux so they could fit their whole hand into it. It's super-easy now, and nobody climbs it because there's no point. The destructive entitlement of some people blows my mind. I really wish I could find that person.

It's not Education that's needed, it's common sense. I don't climb but would know that is not a place you would go.

I’m happy the responsible party came forward. I’m also glad they kept his identity private. Hopefully he can help fix his mistake, doesn’t receive much punishment aside from community service to assist in repairs, and doesn’t receive much social backlash for his mistake. It was very honorable for him to take responsibility and it doesn’t seem like malice played a part in this situation
I mean I could definitely see not knowing about them and missing the glyphs, so I'm glad they took the educational route.

There have been some absolutely magnificent natural Rocks, Fossils and examples of Rock Art which are now Lost Forever because of the actions of a few Totally Selfish individuals. Some people have even videotaped themselves doing it and uploaded it to social media sites, just for their 15 Seconds of Fame.

This spring break season ruined Buckskin Gulch. New graffiti on a daily basis. That area took a beating over the last month. Graffiti on petroglyphs too. Infuriating!!!
Shortcuts. These folks have near zero common sense, even to pick up a book. Used to be that paper maps had *"Do's and Don'ts"* or suggestions for how to be a smart, safe, and considerate hiker, climber, and outdoors person. Next, was getting trained by a pro or old timer. Just because an app or map on your phone can help you find cool spots, does NOT mean that you know what you are doing. Some dude and his GF left LA for the the Mojave on a day trip and both ended dead.

It looks like a beautiful place. I will now look into visiting there while people still can. Invite as many friends and family as possible to enjoy it before it goes away.

I love how instead of getting mad and assuming that the person who did it, did it with no care to the preservation. That education is the key which is very true. Stop getting angry and assuming and educate and give the person a lesson to learn. It is so wonderful, the person who did it stepped forward. And see, he did not realize the mistake he made. Educate! Educate! and don't get mad. There is already enough of that in the world.
Ignorance is not a defense in a court of law, and it shouldn't be here either. If this happened, to say, Mount Rushmore can that person just go "oops I didn't know, lets chaulk this up as a learning experience" No. There's thousand year old history and art on those walls, what in God's name would posses you to put bolts and anchors in it? And if it's a tourist attraction that TONS of people visit every year don't you think those bolts and anchors would have already been placed here by someone already. If someone doesn't have basic common sense to realize defacing thousand year old history then they shouldn't be climbing in the first place.
@@ratedRblazin420 Mount Rushmore is a known landmark. It wasn't maliciously done. There are ppl still able to rock climb in that area. The issue is where you put the anchors. Where that guy put the anchor was not on the art but close to it. If it was a real issue, then there should have been postings about it. I , mean the person who did it, admitted and said they would pay for any damages without even being charged. When does education come in then if we say ignorance is not an excuse. I am sorry but not everyone knows everything about everything out there.
Anyways, the point I think they were honestly saying is not to get angry and viciously attack the person that did it. And maybe learn from all this and have them put up signs to where anchors are to go. So we learn to communicate instead of getting angry.
They guy who did it came forward and hopes to fix his mistake. That takes some integrity and courage as likely he could of shirked it and never been found out.
Education probably is the key. Hopefully sites like this can be preserved for a very long time.

This is a matter of preserving unique ancient history and probably the only time I will agree with destroying someone else’s hard bolting work - because it was preventing the destruction of unique and precious hard work.

It beggars belief that a climber would be so selfish to do this !!. I'm an oldtimer Englishman from Shropshire who has spent may hours in and around Moab over many years. The first time in 1984. How this lovely slickrock town has changed since then, my last trip being in 2012. It's lost all of its character in the name of commercialism. Too many greedy buggers trying to bleed the place dry of real lovers of this town/area.
