This is something like our Nyonya (Peranakan) dish called "asam ko hae" (which means tamarind prawns) that my late grandmother & mother (who's from Penang, Malaysia) used to cook. It's cooked a little differently from yours but just as delicious. I love this dish.😋
Last year I stayed on Ko Sichang and ordered the Tamarind Shrimp at an oceanside restaurant. The chef saw me peeling off the outer shell and came over to tell me I'm supposed eat the whole thing. Well, I did and it made it very crunchy and much easier to eat! They were DELICIOUS!
Thank you, Marion for easy to learn recipes. I am guy that have never cooked big meals before but I've been following your channel and cooking up your recipes, though not as perfect as yours but its tasty n yummy. Pls share more recipes that are kids friendly as well, I have picky eater little one at home.
Here, in the states , specifically the west coast, Tamarind is also available in the Latin section or in Hispanic markets. It’s a predominant ingredient in a lot of their food. Just an FYI for anyone who may not know 🙂
This is interesting! My grandma is from the Northern state of Penang in Malaysia. I’ve had this dish (we call it ‘Asam Heh/Asam Prawn) ever since when I was young and always wondered what kind of cuisine it is since it definitely isn’t Chinese. Considering how close is Southern Thailand to Northern Malaysia, it makes sense to me now that Tamarind prawn is a Thai cuisine!
Oh yes another wonderful dish. We've been having prawns this week and last week. Love them so now I have to try this fabulous looking recipe. Thank you so much Marion. You're always such a joy to watch 🥰🌹
I love the way you cook! My wife and I were scheduled to spend 4 weeks in Bangkok starting in 2 wks but it was cancelled. However, to prepare as the family chef, I've been going through all of your videos and have been having a blast. We've postponed till April and I will be ready for shopping/cooking/fun. Can't wait to be back there!
As a Thai, I love the way you pull it off. 🥰 and btw I agree that palm sugar does have a sharp favor. Adding white sugar surely help, I'll try it today😍
Marion - I just recently discovered your channel. I was raised on Indonesian/Thai food - and so many of your recipes bring back fond family dinner memories. Thank you! Gotta get back to my Marion Marathon - lots to catch up on 😄
When my niece was about 5 she ate shrimp for the first time with my husband and I. I grew up Italian so seafood was always a party of my life. She loved them. When she went home after being with us for a week she kept asking my sister in law for “scramps.” My sister in law finally asked me and I said “oh! She had shrimp!” She’s 8 now and we still pick on her about it but we all call them scramps now. Lol!!!
I was eating some pork the other day and it was so yummy with browned bits, and in my mind i was aggressively screaming MAILLARD REACTION!!! Thanks Marion lolol
I love all kinds of seafood. When factoring in costs, including cash but also the amount of work needed to break through the armour, prawns seem to be the best value for me.
Yes the heads and tails are so crispy and nutritious! My friends are always grossed out by my eating the whole shrimp but I was raised to eat everything.
I’m an adopted Asian lol, I know what you’re talking about from your channel but I didn’t grow up eating the tails or heads. Deff a must try next time :)) great recipe as always xoxo
Hi Marion u should try a filipino fish called SINIGANG its made with a tsmarind and tomato broth real sour but with depth of flavour proteins could be prawns, salmon pork and even beef Hope u cook another filipino dish in the future
The tails are deliciously crunchy if fried crisply enough, of course without toughening the rest of the prawn. Marion, please demonstrate how to eat the HEAD! What is it akin to? Marrow?
👌💞 so good and nice recipes you doing well and i thing you liking black & white dressing but your style very nice you also look like a princess. I'm working working in INDIA a big fashion quality products company in India👌💕
thanks for the recipe. Didn't work for me though. There must be some error in the ingredients or idk, but it had that much sugar that it was almost a candy, there was also 1 tsp of salt in the recipe, and all together it tasted horrible. I liked the way prawns were peeled and cooked though🔥
I love when she makes up descriptions "so prawny!"
I made it. It's very yummy.🎉
Marion I can listen to you all day long
I'm watching your videos so frequently that my english is getting your accent! Love that 😂💕

When that sauce is drizzling on the prawns, it looks so beautiful and tasty.

‘Udang’ in malay! Malaysian here❤️
I call them delicious 😋
In the Netherlands we call them: garnaal (plural: garnalen)
The tails are deliciously crunchy if fried crisply enough, of course without toughening the rest of the prawn. Marion, please demonstrate how to eat the HEAD! What is it akin to? Marrow?
I think it would be safe (and G rated) to substitute "digestive tract" for "poo thing." =)
Gamba's or garnalen, depending on it's size, are the general terms used to describe prawns in my country.
🇳🇱
Hipon.. that's how we called it.. Subscriber here
Can your homemade wonton wrappers used for making homemade dumplings?
Hearing you describe the flavor makes me think my tastebuds will get a beating from the prawns when I make this dish lol
Prawns AKA Camarones 🍤
👌💞 so good and nice recipes you doing well and i thing you liking black & white dressing but your style very nice you also look like a princess. I'm working working in INDIA a big fashion quality products company in India👌💕
What would you eat with it, likes veggies or rice? 🇨🇦

thanks for the recipe. Didn't work for me though. There must be some error in the ingredients or idk, but it had that much sugar that it was almost a candy, there was also 1 tsp of salt in the recipe, and all together it tasted horrible.
I liked the way prawns were peeled and cooked though🔥
Prawn (Eng.)-Udang(Indonesian)-Urang(Javanese)
Camarão or gamba depending on the size!
Can one use either potato starch or cornstarch instead of flour?
Gluten Free!
I've always wanted to ask this, Marion: why do you wear lensless glasses?
I think because the light will reflect off it and it will distract viewers from the video but why can’t she jus take the glasses off?
Garnalen 🍤
De-veined is what we call it in the states. 😆 poo, gunk for marion
I know exactly what you are talking about 😄
I live in UAE ,here in arabic, prawns are called Rubian (roo-bee-aan).
