- We recently showed you how to create your own patches to sew on a vest or jacket. Today we show you a couple of ways to sew them on yourself. If you have a sewing machine and a basic set of skills you can easily do this!

That is so brilliant. Using you sewing machine to hand sew it on. I never thought of manually moving the needle.
It keeps me on the line 😉
I did this with leather vests and I hand painted the stuff I wanted on mine. I painted a jacket last week that says Amacing Maces on the back with a lot of intricet designs on it. I hand sew leather as well. I can make a vest for about 30 bucks materials.
Picture of a mideval Mace Morning Star on the back.
Thank you so very much for an amazing informative tutorial!! Very much appreciated!
Glad to help 😉
Very cool JR, thanks for showing how to do this,,, I believe I have the same sewing machine as yours that belonged to my mother when we lived in Othello back in the 60’s & 70’s, I’m going to break it out and see if I can get it to work on putting some patches on my new vest. This really inspired me, thank you.
Right on! These are great sewing machines!
if you are gonna sew by hand then i recommend a saddle makers needle , its twice as thick as a standard sewing needle & it wont break , it worked when i sewed patches on my Dissection tribute vest
You rock from an Oregonian!
Thanks! I love Oregonians!
Thanks Man for the Great tutorial. Best video I've seen on sewing patches on leather with a home sewing machine. I make most of my patches with my Brother 425 Embroidery/Sewing machine and have sewn the patches I've made onto my denim vest, but I wasn't sure about sewing my patches on my leather vest. You gave me the confidence to go for it. Thanks Again!
mikesidoj2 glad it was useful. Punching holes in your leathers can be scary, but once you do it the first time it's not that bad. I've even modified the length of a pair of miss cut chaps using my sewing machine.
Just subscribed, because #1 your in Washington, 2 your a biker, thanks for the ride tip I'll look into that ride, 3 you play HORDE looking forward to classic re-release and 4 you know how to sew I do not!
*Edit* you made patches look super easy, I suppose I'll get better at it. I covered the basics ... Get it on straight, don't screw up the liner ... As for the rest as someone whom has NEVER sat behind a sewing machine, today I learned how to spool a bobbin, and thread the needle run the tails out the back ... Adjust stitch length, turn off pushing dogs and well go till the damn thing is on there and looks good as you can imagine the look good part of that took a try or ten ... But hey it's on but I don't think I'm ready to do a full back patch on my expensive Wilson ... Someone in Lynnwood will get that business
For the horde lol
Very helpful, no nonsense, great tips.
Thanks!
not the danger thanks amigo. It's one of those things that scares people, but it's easily do-able with a home sewing machine!
I don't know if you still do this but I use tacky glue. I have seen some people use rubber cement. Thanks for the hoop idea. I'm gonna use it.
Come on now, we both know those Kevlar linings don't go anywhere!
Cool vid though bro. Embroidery hoops. Seen a lot but I've never seen that. And thank you for denouncing spray glue as the hazard that it is.
Love you video! Thank you! I'd love a patcher but haven't been able to afford one but I do have a bunch of vintage machines but was afraid they couldn't do these!
I've used my Plastic brother machine as well. Get heavy (denim needles) and just take your time. I was worried it wouldn't be up to the task but I was pleasantly surprised!
Great video, I just started sewing patches on for myself
Thought I needed a bigger machine, store said nope my
15 year old one will do, they suggested a Teflon or roller foot
If I am sewing leather onto leather, and a temporary spray
Adhesive, works well doesn’t destroy leather or denim
The hand turning idea is fantastic.
I still gotta source a good patcher machine to get into sleeves
And pockets
Right on!
Very helpful, awesome video! THANKS
TyLima93 glad it helped!
You’re awesome!
Thank you!
Dad wore that SAC patch in a B52 during the Cuban Missile crisis. You must be a USAF family, kudos!
Is that a can of Guinness ?
Helps every project!
Lol probably a Walmart diet soda
Great video! Thanks!! One question from a novice- do you sew inside the patch’s edge stitching? Or outside? Pretty sure not on:)
I actually sew on the edge. You can see it anywhere, but I didn't want a loose patch catching on my leathers. Hope that helps.

Lok'Tar Ogar!
is the foot on your machine a walking foot or a universal foot?? I have been sewing for years but first attempt at leather and I don't want to mess up my vests...Thanks in advance☺
coultermom3 I just used the regular foot, but I have a walking foot too. Just keep everything taut with straight pins and you should be ok. I did back the foot pressure off quite a bit though...
Thank you so much for this video!
I'd like to ask a question though: I've been planning to sew fabric panels on a leather jacket and, for the life of me, CANNOT, find a tutorial of that anywhere online. So, I was wondering if I could apply the same steps you've shown, but to sew large fabric panels on?
Thanks again!
Absolutely. Same process, just bigger eh?
Are you using special straight pins? I have a had time getting any type of pins thru my leather vest.
Annak Rice I use regular pins. They are a little longer, but nothing special. They get bent sometimes and I have to toss them. Are you using the longer dress making pins?
Would be quite difficult to sewing the patches if there's an inner side pocket of a vest, the difficulties has sense in a way to split (separate) between the surface of an "Inner Side Vest" & the "Inner Pocket" themselves-just to penetrate the sewing needles strictly on a surface of an inner side vest only & without ... in-evitably (forcedly un-avoid) "Getting Stitched (Sticked Along)" also the inner pocket with an inner side of vest surface. In fact- it is a leather jacket, surely it's hardly painful to forced ourselves Stitching-& @ the same time also ... "Facing The Thickness" of Hard Leather's Substance in a way of sewing through it deeper. 😫😪😓😢
I've had no issues doing it in this fashion. Do it however you like. 🙄
Thanx for the Direct Reply Mr.@@JRMorris 🙂🙏
Hey I found a sewing machine for free on Craigslist I got but it doesn't have a cord or pedal. How do ik if it works and do I need a
How did you hold the large patch on the back in place to sew it on?
The same way as the small ones. Some carpet tape to tack it in place, then just sew her down. Easy 😉
@@JRMorris Awesome, thanks! I had a hunch there wasn’t anything special for larger patches. Off to put patches on my husband’s vest. Thanks again!
@@margielurie109 right on! Glad to help!
are you pulling the lining taught before you pin. sometimes my lining gets bunched up.
Yes, vinyl linings are really slick! The first time I did this I didn't control the lining very well and I had a nasty wrinkle. If you can get an embroidery hoop onto the garment it's a lot easier to control.
I use the longer pins when working on leather...
How do you sew near inner pockets; without wrecking the pockets?
Inner pockets are tricky. The two options are to either avoid them or hand sew to the inside of the pocket. You could also disassemble the garment and re sew it but that's a lot of work. I just try to avoid them. 👍
@@JRMorris Thank you!
What type of thread?
jackie gee i use polyester. It seems to hold up better in the elements.
Does the embroidery hoop not leave marks on the leather? Nice video!
No, I've tried wood, steel, and plastic with no issues. It's pretty hard to get them tight enough to do anything as it is due to the thickness of the leather.
camera doesn't show the auctual pinning
Rachael Ploegstra I use as few pins as possible. The carpet tape will hold the patch, the pins keep it from twisting. Does that make sense?
where did you find the ribbon rack?
I made a patch with the ribbons and see it on. No rack. 😉
