  • I am SO excited to share this episode with your guys today! We’re bringing back Fr. Robert Spitzer, a Catholic priest, scientist and author to talk about the soul. How do we know it exists? Is it just some concept Christianity made up? How do we know the soul exists?
Fr. Robert and I dig into how Plato and Aristotle and even cultures BEFORE the ancient Greeks knew that a soul exists, why monkeys and other animals don’t have souls, and how the fascinating data on near-death experiences ties in perfectly with Catholic theology.
This is such an interesting episode and it’s always wonderful talking to Fr. Robert. Learn more about his work at the Magis Center: www.magiscenter.com/

I had an NDE in 1980 during a traumatic childbirth. Fr. Spitzer described everything perfectly and even validated a couple of things that I've never told anyone. It's still difficult for me to fully articulate what an absolutely amazing experience it was. It was also the beginning of my long, slow conversion to Catholicism (I was raised Mormon). I was baptized at Easter Vigil 2024 - yep, that feeling of awe is still there!

I had a head-on collision and suffered serious head and other bodily injuries (21+ facial fractures from eyes down), but miraculously no brain injury despite a serious nasal fracture as well. This happened 38 years ago. I almost? died in ICU and experienced a wonderful experience of ‘floating’ peacefully thru a beautiful white crystal-like tunnel holding my 22 week gestation baby toward what I perceived as my grandmother and father who passed away earlier along with another masculine and powerful being I could only identify as Divine. Upon reaching out to show my baby boy to them, they reached out to hold him. I was then told it wasn’t my time and I needed to turn around and go back. I so didn’t want to. However, immediately upon turning around, I became more joyful than I had ever been in my life and despite great struggles in the months ahead, continued to enjoy a sense of peace and joy that was above it all. Life here has brought some painful and difficult experiences which have made maintenance of this joy wain but although no one has ever asked me while under a polygraph I am clear that I am joyfully ready formoving on from this material world. God Be with you both!

I'd hypothesize dogs have a very basic understanding of 'I', or at least of possession. Other mammals too. What is territory, being land or objects (such as a ball, bone, favorite doggy bed or even puppies) but a possession, and one must have a sense of self in order to have ownership over something else. • @glenliesegang233
      @glenliesegang233 2 месяца назад

For all those atheists who think NDEs are purely neurological events, they should consider this:
Viable electrically active neurons can be found 9 hours after clinical death.
In NDE'S some report that 2 minutes can be experienced as 2 hours, days, weeks, or even months.
A hellish NDE could subjectively last years before "silence occurs."

    • @Isaac-vj2xn

Thankfully if it's just a neurological event you're not being sent to the experience by forces outside of yourself, hence atheists not particularly fearing it.

My husband had a NDE a few years back after multiple surgeries from a surgical mishap. He did not see anything that he remembers but felt the presence of Jesus and a profound peace. He was told not yet and he came back. He was very agitated when he came out of his anesthesia and couldn't wait to tell me about it. I had been praying the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy daily at his bedside, asking Jesus to please not take him yet. ( P.S. I am an RN and did not think he would survive with the numerous complications he had)These were silent prayers and were never spoken to him. He has no fear of death and told me he didn't want to come back except for me.

This was an amazing talk! I would love to dive deeper with Fr. Spitzer on this topic, especially as to how these experiences correlate to Catholic Doctrine, ie, do children who die in utero without baptism go to Heaven or to limbo? Also, Christ himself said many are called, few are chosen, meaning many don't make it to heaven. Wow, there is so much more to talk about in this regard. Thanks, Chris for putting this together, and maybe you could have some deeper discussions with Father on this subject in the future.

    • @cordzcaezarbante2647
      @cordzcaezarbante2647 День назад

      1. "As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus' tenderness toward children which caused him to say: "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them," allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church's call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism." (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1261)
      2. Contrary to the Calvinist perspective of the verse that it preaches predestination, the Catholic view interprets it within its context as a parable (Matt. 22:1-14). It is not that God predestined some to die and some to live. Rather, He chose those who chose to live and die. The invited guests chose to ignore or reject the king's invitation (Matt. 22:5-6); therefore, the king was insulted and sent an army (Matt. 22:7). Same goes for the man without wedding clothes. The man chose not to prepare his best clothes (Matt. 22:11-12); therefore, the king was insulted and tortured him. Being poor isn't a good excuse either because everyone, good or bad, were invited from the streets (Matt. 22: 9-10), none of whom were singled out like him. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church (546) says "Jesus’ invitation to enter his kingdom comes in the form of parables" in which he "invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice: to gain the kingdom, one must give everything. Words are not enough, deeds are required".

    Amen!
When I think of birthdays I think of our quickening. On a biological level, when you are experiencing the quickening of your child, that traditionally means you are feeling your child's first movement in your womb. But the real quickening is THIS bright flash 0:14 at the moment of conception. The bright flash occurs when sperm enters an egg and it leads to a surge of calcium which, triggers the release of zinc from the egg. As the zinc shoots out, it binds to small molecules which emit a fluorescence which can be picked up by camera microscopes. ruclips.net/video/BJ2x_5MSuyg/видео.html
In a theological sense, regardless of whether we are male or female, we are experiencing the quickening of the Holy Spirit when we feel the movement of the Holy Ghost in our soul. When we invite the Holy Ghost to fill our minds with light and knowledge, He “quickens” us, that is to say, enlightens and enlivens the inner man or woman. In 1 Thessalonians chapter 5, Paul admonished the members to act in a manner as becometh Saints. I pray the Holy Spirit quickens our love together in the Holy Ghost. ❤

Respectfully something kinda bothers me re: suffering & self of nonhuman creatures. With a half degree of water temperature change (or maybe less), a mass migration of a sea insect can happen; while these water bugs were once fed to prisoners due to their sheer abundance, today they're a delicacy sought after by the wealthy, and we call them lobsters. With a farmer's sheep, and given enough time, don't those sheep eventually give that farmer a hard time when it comes to that truck? The sheep might be off to slaughter right away (that tends to happen in a handful of religions 🤭🤣), so it's suffering never got enough Time to develop and be displayed. i could easily be wrong though since... i'm nuts, not a sheep 🤣😭 This is a great talk! (David Foster Wallace's "Consider the Lobster" was here because Kilroy has the day off) // Is it the duty of the higher species to look upon the lower ones, and maybe recognize that their ability to demonstrate life-preserving preferences are something that we, too, perform, amd and it deserves better respect? We ruthlessly extract FROM them ... Heck to the Horse-shoe crab, WE ARE the vampire!! (Their blue blood is useful in our own medical therapies, they're tossed back into the sea after their involuntary donation)

Excuse me? “No one is happy” thinking we are made up of chemicals? As a biochemist let me tell you, I’m thrilled!
Understanding exactly how electron & atoms move to make life work is fascinating! To see the exact chemical reactions that cause life, is to face the amazing capacity of energy to transform into wildly different forms.
To say humans are merely “a bag of chemicals” is the wrong attitude. The wondrous chemistry of life is structured & consistent & knowable, all things that a god is not. Which makes it infinitely more satisfying to understand. Without chemistry, there would be no life!
I think humans longing for god is a longing for both knowledge (now available thru science) and emotional acceptance, which we have to create in our life by forming family & friends. As for perfection, no such thing exists. Ideals are merely thoughts generated by electrons.

    • @RealLifeCatholic
      @RealLifeCatholic  2 месяца назад

As thrilling as chemistry is, most people wouldn’t, in fact, genuinely rest in the idea that that thrill itself, has no more significance than particles bouncing around in an almost predetermined way making you think chemistry matters. Or making you think that you matter. Or that the bag of bones typing a response on his keyboard matters more than the keyboard he is typing on.
The longing for God is rooted in more than desires for acceptance and knowledge, though faith does also “work” for those things.
Of course, that doesn’t disprove the object of faith any more than food is “disproved” because it satisfies hunger.

@@ST-ov8cm I don't need "to ask" because there is no absolute definition of "rationality" that could then be subdivided into "human rationality," "canine rationality," "bird rationality" and so on. All other species are measured by human standards which is idiotic in this day and age. I could allow and only to a degree at that for the fact Aquinas might not have noticed animals' intelligence (but then, that means he was too dogmatic and not interested in actually at least observing that in non-human creatures), but these days only ppl who lack critical thinking and/or who just don't care about animals would parrot that.
E.g., vision: there is a general concept/definition of vision, and then we can talk about human vision system, bird-raptors vision system; reptile vision-system, canine vision system and so on. Same should technically be for "rationality." The problem is while vision can be examined because there is a clear organ system that is responsible for it; 'rationality" cannot. However, there has already been enough observed about animals' rationality and emotional depth, which, at the very least, should warrant keeping this question open and allow for a very strong possibility of it being there, we just cannot define what it is because only if animals could tell us we would be able to.
So, there are researchers/animal ethologists who affirm that, but the majority keep spewing the idi0cy about "non-rational" animals.

This all sounds nice but the problem is the Bible does not say anything about a separate soul of man but the Bible does say that man is a soul. No part of man is immortal when the body dies your soul dies. The Bible does not say that your soul lives forever but it does say in 1 Timothy 6:16, “who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has ever seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power, Amen.” God give man immortality we are not born with an immortal soul, we are a soul. I did not hear any science proving the existence of a soul i did hear a lot about consciousness. I like all of what was said and I agree with all except the soul, we are a soul we dont have a soul, that’s what the Bible teaches. It will not hurt anyone who believes that they have a soul it brings comfort like Santa Claus is for children it doesn’t hurt them.

The soul is NOT something that we possess and lives on after death, that is "breathed into us", for how many have read what Genesis 2:7 says ? It reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became ("become", Hebrew hayah, meaning "to exist, i.e. be or become", and NOT put within) a living soul."
So, Genesis 2:7 shows that until the first man Adam was "breathed into his face the breath of life" by God, he was a DEAD soul, or a non-breathing soul, for the word soul in Hebrew is nephesh, that literally means "breather, a breathing creature", so that anything that breathes IS a soul and NOT has a soul.
For example, at Numbers 31:28, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "And thou shalt separate a portion to the Lord from them that fought and were in the battle, one soul of five hundred as well of persons as of oxen and asses and sheep", in which the plunder that the Israelites acquired from them taking vengeance on the Midianites and Moabites for their women seducing Israelite men to worship Baal of Peor in exchange for sex, included people and animals who ARE souls and does NOT possess a soul.
At Deuteronomy 12:20, the Catholic Douay Version reads: "When the Lord thy God shall have enlarged thy borders, as he hath spoken to thee, and thou wilt eat the flesh that thy soul desireth", showing the soul is a person desiring to eat "flesh" or meat.
At Leviticus 23:29, 30, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "Every soul that is not afflicted on this day, shall perish ("perish", Hebrew karath, meaning "to cut off or down, to destroy or consume") from among his people: And every soul that shall do any work, the same will I destroy ("destroy", Hebrew ' abad, meaning "to perish, causative, destroy") from among his people."
And at Jeremiah 2:34, it reads according to the Catholic Douay Version: "And in thy skirts (of the nation of Israel that is described as a wicked woman) is found the blood of the souls of the poor and innocent? not in ditches have I found them, but in all places, which I mentioned before."
Thus, after Peter had healed a man lame from birth, he told the Jewish crowd in the temple that it was through Jesus Christ as "God's Servant......the righteous one" that this man was healed (Acts 3:13), with Peter saying at Acts 3:22, 23 according to the Catholic Douay Version: "For Moses said (at Deut 18:15, 18, 19):"
"A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me: him you shall hear according to all things whatsoever he shall speak to you. And it shall be, that every soul which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed ("destroyed" Greek exolothreuo, meaning "root out and destroy completely") from among the people."
So, what has been learned here ? That (1), the soul breathes, (2) that the soul desires to eat meat, (3) that the soul can be destroyed, and (4) that the soul has blood. So, what is the proper conclusion of what the soul is ? Anything that breathes, such as animals, including insects and arachnids, and it is us as humans, us as a living person with all our desires, so that as long as we are breathing, we are "a living soul", but upon death we become a dead soul.
And it need be understood that there is NO purgatory, for when a person dies, they cease to exist, as Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6 states according to the Catholic Douay Version: "For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know NOTHING MORE, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy are all perished ("perished", Hebrew ' abad, meaning "to perish, causative, destroy"), neither have they any part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun."

What’s wrong with quoting scripture, and using a Hebrew and Greek Concordance called Strongs Exhaustive Dictionary. The first chapters of Genesis talk about the soul and spirit. A soul is a person, life or body. A soul does everything a person does. The Greek philosophers twisted the meaning of the word soul.
    Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath (spirit) of life; and man became a living soul. (person). The reverse happens at death.
A we use the word soul correctly all the time.
    That poor pitiful soul.
The problem started with a lie. Everyone wants to believe the lie.
    Genesis 3:4 (KJV)
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
Notice it says God made the serpent.
    Genesis 3:1 (KJV)
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
The meaning of serpent is snake, whispering, to perceive by observation. He looked, assumed and he came to a conclusion without knowledge or truth.
    Souls eat
    Leviticus 22:6 (KJV)
The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water.
    Deuteronomy 12:20 (KJV)
When the LORD thy God shall enlarge thy border, as he hath promised thee, and thou shalt say, I will eat flesh, because thy soul longeth to eat flesh; thou mayest eat flesh, whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
    Psalm 22:29 (KJV)
All [they that be] fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
    Micah 7:1 (KJV)
Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: [there is] no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
    Luke 12:19 (KJV)
And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, [and] be merry.

The body, soul and the spirit. The soul is the life and thinking conscience for the body and the spirit. The spirit lives on after the body dies and your soul goes on with the spirit. The soul is 'you' but inhabits the body while it is alive and the spirit when the body is dead.. Or is it the other way around? The brain is the tool used by the body to keep you alive.

Although I am a devout Catholic, I also have a science degree, and I do think this interview is mistitled, because no actual science is presented here. Fr. Spitzer recalls a couple of specific NDE’s, but gives no reference where those specific examples can be found, and there are no links provided to confirm the data that he presents. The rest of Fr. Spitzer’s commentary about NDE’s is non-specific, anecdotal reference. As far as “science proving the existence of the soul,” that is not indicative of the content. The discusssion seems to actualize philosophy as proving the existence of the soul. I don’t need to be convinced as to the existence of the soul, but for those who understand what scientific proof is, and who do need it to prove the existence of the soul, this discussion doesn’t pass scientific muster. I’m a fan of Chris, but this title was a disappointing mislead.

This guy is using a vague populist understanding of what the soul is. He confuses the spirit and the soul. Watchman Nee wrote with the best clarity on the tripartite nature of man, being comprised of Body, Soul and Spirit. This tripartite nature is specifically attested in the New Testament. Our Spirit is what we use to communicate with God: Our Conscience, , sense of communion, yearning , worship, quest for God. Our Soul is the linkage or intermediate part of us that gives expression to the body and spirit. It is comprised of emotions, mind and will. Many animals share rudimentary elements of soulish qualities. This can be seen with the rudimentary puzzle solving ability of crows and the NZ Kea Parrot. P.S> The fake apostle, Bishop of Rome might give Mr Spitzer permission to call himself (spiritual) Father, but Jesus specifically forbids this.

The arrogance to affirm that they know what animals think or don’t think is astounding. Anthropocentrism at its worst. Those who miss animals’ depth and complexity are like colour-blind who can never see the richness of colour (no offence to the colour-blind).

Being Catholic is NOT the answer, JESUS is the answer - "You must be born again." John 3:3 (in Christ only, HIS work alone on the Cross, extra works beyond is complete blasphemy). Additionally, we don't know "for sure" about near death experiences, they could be filled with deception to make us feel okay about death and not pay attention to what Christ did on the Cross for each of us. So I wouldn't put faith in those experiences. More reliable is the Word of God (the Bible).
