There is absolutely nothing lazy about this art style. I guarantee you that as simple and as 'random' as the art looks, it actually takes a tremendous amount of work to get 3d to look as dynamic as this does. The movie looks very imperfect and to do this you have to fight with computer so much that wants to render it perfectly and with realistic lighting. Trust when I say that it would have been a million times easier to make it look more like a Pixar movie
I agree with you for sure! Watching the movie I can see all the little details that went into it... Making this painterly rough look is very difficult to do well and I think they did it really well
Absolutely agree, worked on Love Death & Robots: The Tall Grass episode which was meant to have a painterly look that does try to avoid rigid "classic" CG geo and surface, it was a tremendous effort, imagine manually projecting hand-made textures in every shot, endless paintovers that need to be re-fit for every new angle shown while integrating everything with changing light sources / camera moves etc. It is super difficult and requires months of lookdev. What's seen in the Turtles vid is taking it above and beyond, very impressive. Of course it is still personal taste if one likes that or not. Personally I am glad to see more like this and less standardised Pixar approaches.
@@yannickawan3394 That is awesome! Making these looks take lots of manual work but that is why they are different and beautiful. I personally love to see these experimentation in animation and it gives us a more diverse viewing experience.
Thank you very much. I am planning to do some Rinotuna studies and tutorial which is something close to anime (but not entirely). I think I will try to do anime study in the next month or two. It will be fun to try and experiment with it.
I just watched this movie, this morning. The movie looks beautiful. I just didn't care for the story. Don't like the acting or personality choices for the characters. It felt like the actors were doing improv.
You can watch the video about the spiderverse movie here

That's fair. But I agree that the art itself and the look was really unique and beautiful
