  • Ironically enough, this test was less agonizing than the 30mph/50kmh test. I clearly should have gone harder up the hill. I don't think it would have changed the results though.

That hill has been my nemesis for over 40 years. Great video!

Thanks for watching. I personally try to avoid that hill with any of my recumbents. I’m not a big fan of climbing.

To what effect do you think crank arm length has on everything? I understand your Buelk has 155s, while the W9 has 145s. I’m going to leave the question open ended, because I have my opinions. I want to know what you think. Thanks in advance!

My W9 actually has 140 cranks. Because of how upright I have to sit with my short torso, I would actually not fit the W9 with longer cranks. My knees barely clear as it is.
As far as impact, the gearing is lower with the shorter cranks and smaller rear wheel. That means I’m spinning more rather than grinding like I do in the Bülk. I don’t know how much I would quantify that impact, but I do think it has some influence. The 5lb weight difference between the two bikes also has an influence. I was surprised the Bülk fell behind though because the Bülk is much stiffer and has a more efficient power transfer.
Now that I’ve completed the testing series, I may very well offer the W9 up for sale. I just don’t fit well in it and it doesn’t really do anything the Bülk can’t do. No sense in having two generally similar bikes when one doesn’t really fit me and the other does.

I’ll search for your email and go directly so we could talk further about me buying your W9. I am a speed seeker and train accordingly. From what you’ve explained between the 2 bikes, I may actually buy 2 Bulks; one for my wife and one foe me. I thought the Alpha series might be ever be slightly faster, however, there are design elements of the Bulk which seem better than Daniel Fenn designs…

If you want speed, the Snoek and Milan SL are the absolute fastest. Neither will exceed the Bülk until you get up around 30mph. The W9 in my experience is more hype than performance outside of climbing. If you want a W9, it really should be more because it fits you well and you desire that 5lb weight savings and the elastomer suspension.

Nice video thanks but at the end I don't understand which one is faster uphill and even downhill 🤔

The W9 was about 8 watts less to go uphill than the Bülk. Downhill the Bülk was a tiny bit faster, but really I need a longer hill to test the downhill part.

@@mnveloguy great! so at 4w/kg it's enough to reduce the rider weight by 2 kg 😉

@@daniele_go yeah, pretty insignificant in my opinion too. Just another reason to always choose the bike that fits you the best and has the features you need. Performance between models with similar designs and shapes is usually going to be identical.
