  • Marion Davies Hearst Mansion in Beverly Hills Story Location Tour
Built in 1927 the Hearst Mansion in Beverly Hills is one of the largest, most expensive homes in American history. Join me on this tour and learn about the history of this house and its residents like Marion Davies and William Randolph Hearst. I'll also show you thirteen of this house's acting roles over the years in films and TV shows like Charlie's Angels, The Mod Squad, Columbo, Fletch, The Godfather, The Jerk, Angel Angel Down We Go, The Man With Bogart's Face, Into the Night, The Bodyguard, The Colby's Harper, and Jay- Z and Beyonce's Lemonade video. It's also the home where Rihanna and Adele celebrated their birthdays.

Justin I agree with you whole heartedly… we need more fun movies… I was a teenager in the 80s and most everything was fun, music was great , clothes were fun as there were so many styles: mod, 50s, new wave, rock, Madonna look, Cindy Lauper look, big hair… just a fun fun time.

There was a huge warehouse at San Simeon where Hearst had tons of things stored for the castle. Most likely
that fireplace mantle was in the warehouse and shipped south for use in the home there! The Chief also had a five story main warehouse in New York where most of his European finds ended up before being shipped to Hearst's private wharf at San Simeon, Ca. After the family turned 120 hill top acres and the castle over to the State of Ca. The Hearst corp. sold most of the items in the warehouse. The Madonna Inn at slo has a marble balustrade leading upstairs to the gift shops which Alex Madonna bought from that warehouse sale along with other items to include huge carved entry ways, plaster of paris pieces copied in marble on the hill by Italian artisans in residence there.

I first took notice of this house in an episode of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour. It was filmed a few years after Marion Davis died, I think it might have been the first to use it as a filming location. The pool was drained and it didn't look as magnificent as it does in later movies and shows, but I fell in love with the home and grounds. It reminded me of the line in Sunset Blvd whe Joe describes Norma's home as "The kind crazy movie people built in the crazy 20s."

Jennifer Jones came to Hollywood with her then-husband, Robert Walker, probably best known today for Strangers on a Train. She began her relationship with Selznick while still married to Walker (who had his own battle with mental health).

Justin ! Love this video, I have been fascinated with the history of this house. My Aunt & Uncle took me there when I was 12, but I could only peek over the road. Was for sale many times. I appreciate the films you mentioned . Will watch the one with Jennifer Jones, one of my favorite actresses. We went to San Simeon right after the Patty Hearst debacle. There was a bomb planted in one of the entry ways with the black smoke staining the stone. 1977 my first trip to California I was home.

I have actually heard of "Angel, Angel Down We Go." However, I never would've known that Holly Near, lesbian poetess leading light of the Women's Music scene starred in it as a wayward debutante banging her father's pool boy lover, or whoever that was. The only one I have seen of all those movies and TV shows you named is "Harper." I agree about those tacky moorish arches around the pool. I would love to see old photos of parties from 85 years ago.
There was a mansion on San Vicente Blvd. where Marion and W. R.'s secret daughter, Patricia Van Cleve, lived with her family and Marion toward the end of Marion's life. I had been under the impression that it was torn down a few decades ago, but maybe it was this house where they all lived together, and there was not another house on San Vicente.

Your Bogart here, is look-alike Robert Sacchi, who did Bogey most of his rather limited career. Another Bogey, not so well done, and given short shrift in too-brief glimpses, was Jerry Lacy, in Woody Allen's PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM. If you gotta try for Bogey, I'm going with Sacchi. Great tour of this indelibly atmospheric mansion.

This was really well done. Informative and entertaining, well researched and many photos and clips. A lot of content creators seem to just wanna show their big faced close ups. The wind/earthquake made me laugh, yeah was super loud on the subwoofer! In that 1960's clip of the teen's coming of age party, the black actor was a young Lou Rawls a popular R&B/Soul singer.

Just watched this following the 3-part Murder Mystery. Another interesting video! Thank you!! You mentioned the death of that producer...There was some speculation that he was murdered at San Simeon and moved back to his house; that the murder scene was staged. That would make an interesting story. Or the death of Jean Harlow's second husband sounds rather mysterious, too, with the studio execs. getting involved with the 'crime scene' before the police were notified. Just a thought.
Anyway, thank you again for your time and talent!!

The small house at the entrance is called a 'Gate House' and yes is to house the Security Staff members. Agree with you Justin about those 'Arcades'..........they are overkill Beverly Hills tacky. All the photos I've every seen of this house shows them existing. Possibly they were hidden by brought in trees/shrubbery or removed in the films editing room.

I like that you spent so much time around the house, giving folks a chance to see details. More of the inside though!
A line of arches on a building is an Arcade, many of the Calif missions are fronted by one (“Vertigo”s San Juan Bautista, but not San Francisco). A line of columns, but no arches, is a colonnade. Why the after-market arcade was given a moorish look (since the arches on the house are round) is curious. There is a Spanish + Moorish connection in Spain, but not in this house.
You don’t see a lot of Hedda Hopper in front of the camera (“Sunset Boulevard”), her pen did its damage behind the scenes. Still, when her mug shows up on celluloid, it doesn’t hurt to pin her nastiness where it will do the most good: The old bag was a rabid, anti-communist hysteric who spied on and reported people to HUAC, destroying who knows how many careers and lives as Washington lost the thread and forgot what they were fighting for.

Splendid old mansion from the 1920s. The poolside arches are Venetian, while the house is Romanesque, which is rather jarring. According to the book DREAM PALACES, HOLLYWOOD AT HOME by Charles Lockwood, Hearst purchased the place for $120,000 (!!) in the late 1940s when his health forced him to leave his castle at San Simeon.

Plus the sublime commentary…pay attention children it’s going to be a moderately snarky ride. Perhaps some seasonal catty as well. Great job.
P.S. When I got my first Mustang II, I would secretly pretend to be the astute and understatedly elegant Miss Sabrina Duncan. Except with a penis and without the astuteynessness. But Sabrina nonetheless.

I didn't know the children of Hearst, and the doctor drugged Marion Davies and not let her be with R. Hearst at his death bed. She was the one taking care of Hearst till the end, and she summoned the Hearst kids to say their good buys at her house she shared with R. Hearst. Very sad they did that.

The Peter Bogdanovich movie "The Cat's Meow" presents a widely-rumored version of the passing of producer Tom Ince aboard W.R. Hearst's yacht and the origin of Hearst columnist Louella Parsons' lifetime contract, beautifully filmed with a wonderful cast. The rumors were fanned by differing news accounts of the time and place of Mr. Ince's passing. Marion Davies addressed and dismissed the rumors in her autobiography "The Times We Had" (well worth a read for fans of Old Hollywood and/or Miss Davies, Hearst history, et al.). W.R.'s granddaughter Patricia Hearst wrote a novel "Murder At San Simeon" painting a portrait of Marion Davies that reflects the pain and heartache W.R. Hearst's and Ms. Davies' affair caused Mr. Hearst's wife and family.
