Our RV Journey of Choosing the Airstream: Are We Happy with Our Decision?

- Join us as we take a look back at our decision-making process and why we ultimately chose the Airstream over other options like small fifth wheels, motor homes, and various RV models that didn't make it to our film. Despite losing our GoPro, we spent considerable time exploring the Grand Design Imagine and Reflection travel trailers, as we've had a great relationship with the brand over the years. However, certain factors, such as the entry-level height and the need for a dog ramp, led us to rule out those choices. We also considered Class A and B+ motorhomes, but their size, cost, and one-room living setup didn't align with our needs. Additionally, the Alliance Small Fifth Wheel caught our attention, but the height and lack of substantial changes made us question the necessity of a switch. Surprisingly, the Airstream Globetrotter won us over. We discuss what we love and dislike about our new Airstream, including the on-demand hot water system and service response challenges we've encountered. As we embark on this new journey, we'll keep you updated on our experiences with the Airstream and whether it truly becomes the right choice for us. Come along and join us in this exciting adventure!

Not sure why but my comment isn't showing up. I'll try again :) We had the same water heater issue on our AS and found it was our regulator not allowing enough propane to pass through the valve. We adjusted the flow and ended up replacing it ourselves just to be safe. Really cheap fix. Since replacing we haven't had any issues anymore. Feel free to reach out if you want details and hopefully save a trip to the dealer.
Oh,wowww! This is really good information. We will pin this comment to help anyone trouble shooting their system. Good to know. We “think” we have our answer. Well….we have an answer. We were a bit shocked. More to come on that this Sunday! 🤯
I've never seen the Globetrotter and always ignored it. However, there is more room fo rmy dog to run in this compared to Flying Cloud (which was my fav). Thanks so much and have fun it it. I will go look at one.
Definitely go in one if you can! We were so surprised. It just doesn’t translate well in the pictures but the openness has really worked well for us. Enjoy whatever you end up in!!
I bought a 2016 Flying Cloud AS...I was the 2nd owner, I absolutely loved it!!! I sold her because of life issues, made 20K profit....now looking to buy another 💜
Gotta love when that happens!!!! Good luck on your shopping!
Holy pickles… your opening to this video. The trying to be serious then the fit of giggles after, you two just have a piece of my heart. It was just that perfect timing of the giggles, and shows that fun loving life energy that you both have. I totally understand the fur baby part of your decision. Our fur babies are not pets, they are our family. Almost every decision I make they are a part of. Thank goodness too because they have probably saved me from a lot of headaches.
Laughing at “Holy Pickles” 🤣 Thank you for such kind words. Our giggles often have terrible timing and get us in trouble!!
If you put car wax over the clean surface of the door handles they won’t show finger smudges. I hope this help 😊
😮😮😮 BRILLIANT!!!! Thank you so much!!!
I have a 2022 30' classic and had issues with not enough hot water in the shower. After searching around, I figured out Kohler puts hot water limiters in the shower fixture. Took out the little plastic piece under hot/cold water adjustment and it fixed my issue.
Very helpful!! Thank you for this information!
You two are great, your honesty is refreshing. I’m looking into an airstream right now, hope to one day see you on the road.
Well, thank you!!!! We love meeting people in the RV community. This isn’t a business for us and we don’t intend for it to ever be so we promise to keep it 100% real!
Does the Airstream ride as nice as the 5th wheel when towing
We enjoy towing both. Both are so much nicer than a traditional travel trailer like we had when our children were young. Having said that, they hype is real on towing the Airstream. We are mostly unaware it’s back there at all. We would really like an Airstream on the outside with a Fifth Wheel on the inside (😂) but the overall transition has been much easier than we anticipated.
The Globetrotter 30 has the best floorplan. The on demand/tankless water heaters are a PITA. You are best to put a traditional water heater. Be thankful you don’t have the Alde system
The one thing we are sure of is that the Globetrotter is the best floor plan for how we live. We are definitely happy with the layout (and the windows😍). It is disappointing to hear the Alde system is also an issue. We always thought that ambient heat looked divine.
When we are on full hookups the hot water heater is great. But when we have conserve, I boil a kettle of water for dishes and use campground shower as a last resort. I hope you get it worked out soon. Safe travels.
Thanks so much! Ours just won’t stay on. It’s in the shop as of this morning so fingers crossed!!
You both look good in that color scheme and with those beautiful windows. Hope your water heater is fixed soon and you can start enjoying your time.
So kind of you!! Thank you. We are off and running so here’s to hoping!
Welcome to the Airstream Family! Are you attending the Airstream International Rally?
Hope to see you down the road😊
Thank you!! We are looking forward to rallies. We got our member packet 2 weeks ago so the dates conflict with our itinerary for the next 3-4 months but we will be attending future events.
We are following you closely to see how you are enjoying the Airstream. We also have a fifth wheel which we love but want to downsize and travel farther with something smaller. We are going to look at a 27' Globetrotter on Saturday. I was noticing there is not much space to decorate. I love my pictures from trips we have been on. Love your videos -
Enjoy the shopping process! We loved the 27’ floor plan but needed more floor space for the dogs and preferred the larger bathroom. You are correct on the lack of usable wall space for decorating. That was definitely a trade off. We aren’t sure yet if we are glad we made the decision. There are always those pros and cons in comparing the two so we will be curious to see how we feel in a few months. We can say for certain that we love travel days in the Airstream and the accessibility for the dog has been a huge improvement! Good luck!!
Make an appointment with the factory service center. It may take 6 months to get in but they will fix it and you will be done with it.
We are so grateful to report- situation has been resolved and all is well 🙌
Did Airstream expedite the water heater repair?
Technically, no but we were going through Coach Net which was very disappointing. Jim just started calling the dealers in closest radius and John’s RV stepped up to help!
Congrats! We love your videos, watched the Alaska trip, as we want to go next year. We like our '22 Classic 33, but have had a few issues. Waiting on a new Coleman AC unit right now. I hope you get your water heater sorted out. Airforums is a great source of info, too. Safe travels!
Thank you!!!! We are excited for you. We look forward to going back. Airforums has been very helpful. We are finding it to be a very supportive community. AC. Yikes! Good luck with that. Definitely the wrong time of the year for AC problems.
Hey guys.. thank you for all the information you share! Hope this works out with your airstream. Quick question: We watched all of your Alaska videos and we are actually leaving from Charlotte this summer as well to go to Alaska. We have two toy poodles...did you guys go to a vet in Charlotte or in the states somewhere before you crossed over to get your health certificate? We were nervous that we may run out of time traveling up and through Canada if it expires in 30 days. Any suggestions?
God Bless!
Yes!!! First - we see so excited for you. We are heading to British Columbia for the summer so maybe we will cross paths on the way. We just got our certificate for Silas last week because it has to be 10 days within you leaving and it’s good for 30 days (we use Weddington Animal Hospital). BUT - BiG BUT - Canada is not requiring health certificates this year so save your money! Our vet realized this after he had already done one for Silas but didn’t do the one for Gatsby. You will need their shot records and they mostly want to know they are up to date on Rabies. We’ve never had a border crossing ask us for the pet information but we definitely always play that one on the safe side! Shot records and you are good to go. Have SO MUCH FUN!!!!!
Ah- but Alaska May require it so check on that. As long as it’s done right before you leave town - you will be fine!
@@lifebetweentheditches1307 Great! Thanks so much. We also use Weddington! Small world😀You guys be safe and yes maybe we will cross paths. We watch y'all every week and have learned a lot about this journey we are getting ready to take! Hope you get your hot water heater fixed soon. It seems like there is always something going wrong with these things. We have definitely come to expect it! God bless and be safe!
Airstream interiors may have less charm than a hospital cancer ward, but at least they cost as much as one.
Sorry you're having trouble with the water heater. We currently own a Classic 33 and the Alde is great when it works. However we're considering downsizing to a FC 27 and wondering about the water heater, as I've read on Air Forums that there have been issues. Maybe you want to consult a Mobile RV repair person rather than wait? Maybe you can submit receipt for warranty reimbursement? One thought we considered is if the water heater doesn't work, we'll go to Truma and have them put the AquaGo in. Seems like several folks do that. It's great you're accommodating your pup. We travel with cats and we think about their needs too when selecting a trailer. Of course, they insist it must be Airstream! LOL
At a dealer today with all the fingers and toes crossed that this will be a quick fix. We have had a few people reach out regarding Truma. They all seem to be very happy with their choice so we will most likely be looking at that upgrade after this trip. It sounds like our pups and your kitties need to be made to watch ASPCA commercials so they know just how good they all have it, right? 😂❤️
Those damn hot water heaters. Get rid of it and replace it with a water heater.😊
So annoying!!!!! If we decide we love the Aistream and keep it then we will definitely be changing it.
@@lifebetweentheditches1307 just don’t replace it with a “hot” water heater. No sense in buying an appliance that heats hot water.
🤣👍
The only problem we had with our on demand tankless water heater is when we picked up our Airstream at the dealership and a technician immediately fixed the problem. We have had no problems since. You may find the attached video helpful: ruclips.net/video/H08kRr0tqbw/видео.html. Good luck!
Thank you so much!!! We never get tired
of the sense of community this life gives us. The helpful and sharing nature of others in RVing is so refreshing!!
Personally I will past on airstream every video I see people are complaining about service.
We have nothing good to say about any service department at any dealer of any RV we’ve ever owned. Ever. EXCEPT for the factory service team at Airstream. They went above and beyond and blew us away. It is a shame dealer service departments are so untrustworthy. 😞
Are y'all Airstream people or can I buy it? 😅
Haha! We do still have the AS but everything we own is for sale. Always. 🤣
I'm following your transition from your 5th wheel to AS closely. After owning several 5th wheels, travel trailers and 1 class A, we are considering making the move to an Airstream 28RB or 30RB. Until now the 5th wheel has suited our needs best. Currently we have a Jayco Eagle HT 27RS which is 33' long rear living with opposing slides. A dislike I was expecting but didn't hear is the lack of floor space in an rv with no slide. My sister and BIL have a Serenity 27FB. They traded a toy hauler for the Airstream. They tell us we will not miss not having slides and will like not having to deal with them especially for roadside stops and overnighters. Another like they have is the towability and the increased fuel mileage. You mentioned these in your previous video. I'm hoping you can elaborate on this in a future video. My BIL touts towability and fuel mileage as his most important likes.
Well…..🤣 I do mention floor space at 1:48 into the video. Briefly. We just aren’t sure yet. We think we would definitely be fine minus the cow sized dog we are about to pack in. At this point, he wasn’t traveling with us since we did such a rapid cross country back and forth. We promise to keep updating you as we find out. We definitely love not having slides on travel days, overnights and full accessibility when it is in storage. We don’t have to move it to a campground to load so that’s nice! It’s all the non-traveling days living in it for the next 13 weeks that we are unsure about so we will all find out together!
@Life Between the Ditches thanks for the reply. I missed the floor space remark. I look forward to your future videos. We live in Charleston so who knows, maybe our paths will cross 1 day.
Its hard to have issues when you buy a brand new unit...we had 3 issues and it taxed me, but we finally have everything worked out...a year later, without Dometic's help🤡 we have been blessed with a rv repair expert friend: Badge❤. When we see a AS comin down the road, we say, here comes a silver bullet😂🎉❤️🙋♀️🛻🇨🇦‼️
So true!
