Going to have to try.... I went to a Deva cut trained gal who used & taught me a ribboning & scrunching technique. When she did it my hair came out beautifully defined & frizz-free, but too defined for my face. I need slightly messy beach look volume to soften my features - a super defined look just makes the ugliness of my facial features pop (seriously). And the ribboning technique in my untrained hands is unachievable anyway. My problem is walking the tightrope between frizz & nice volume - as I live in a very humid Gulf coastal environment. I will try this, though. Since seeing her I just use an overall clumping, plopping, & scrunching technique - but I still hate day 1. Disorganized with no volume. It takes day 2 & beyond for me to have the waves & volume I like.
It’s how most of my washdays end up 😆 I like to take my sweet time with drying and tend to be an afternoon washer. Pretty much never see my Washday results in daylight 😂
I love the Denman when I refresh and just use it on select curls but really don’t like it on Washday, it kills my volume and look of fullness! If you like the definition without being too much, I think you’ll really like this routine!
I just found you and I'm so happy! Hopefully, as I watch your videos, you'll have a recipe on how to deal with Midwest Humidity and someone who sweats just thinking about humidity!
I've said for years that my hair is perfectly happy to curl, but if i try to get it to curl in a different way, it basically refuses to do anything at all!
Janelle I hope you doing well! I miss seeing your videos. You really helped change my life with your hair advice and amazing and silly personality ❤️❤️❤️
I'm so glad you filmed this! I love Ouidad products, and I always see rake and shake on their website. I kind of assumed it was a technique for tighter curls and wouldn't work on my waves. I'll have to try it out! Thank you!
all this is new to me. Most of my life my hai r has been short. But now I am letting it grow out. I have time to play with it and I feel it has wanted to show its curl for years. Thanks for yourinstruction. Love your personal comments.
LOL ~ I JUST had MY first Rake n Shake cut and I'm in WPB! I LOVE my hair now and yours looks fantastic! I want the products she put on my hair, all Ouidad.. My hair was smooth for DAYS and smelt so good. ;)
And, true.. If I over touch or manipulate my hair when it's wet, that's it, it will just be a hot mess that needs to be rewashed and set the next day..
So, I'm always late on these comments. I watched your video last night and was like, hmmm, ok. This morning was wash day and I did what I call a modified rake and shake. I like to put my products on in the shower before I get out. So, after I rinsed my conditioner really well and squeezed all the water out, I applied my curl cream and raked it through, which I normally do. Then applied my gel, raking it through like I always do. Then I did the shaking thing all over my head, kind of sloppy like lol which I've never done. I did all this upside down, like normal. I flip my head back and shake my hair like normal and was like omg. This kinda worked. I plopped for 20 minutes like normal, scrunched the excess water out. I always add a tad more gel, scrunching this in and let my hair air dry for a bit before diffusing. I like that the shaking part lifted the hair off my scalp and gave me some volume. Thanks for the video.
Hey I just got my very first ouidad cut a week ago and was having trouble figuring out how to do the shaking part lol at the end you clamp your finger down! Now I’m going to try doing it myself on my new cut that I love! My stylist went to fast for me to see exactly what he was doing but I loved the results when he was done and ouidad stylists say it’s 50% cut and 50% technique yay 😀
I think this looks amazing. I think it would be a little worth it to maybe try to define the top most layer a bit to get more definition on those top pieces but otherwise this looks like a great way to distribute product and give your scrunching hands a break!
I guess I have been at this a long time (~2010?), because this is the OG technique and I am still using it. It's the default. Thanks for highlighting it now!
Your hair turned out super soft looking while keeping the definition AND volume. Like your hair version 2.0 😉👍 Although I'm not sure if using a mousse for this technique was the best choice...?🤔 So hard with getting the right amount and then distributing it evenly... Idk... I picture using a runny gel when I try this some time soon. Your instructions (again) right on the spot! 🙏🙏🙏
I very much agree with you. I have a few products I have wanted to play with, the mousse was one of them and thought I’d give it a try. I think a leave in and/or cream and gel would be best. A lot of Ouidads tutorials they smooth the gel in before even doing the technique and then don’t touch it. That’s what I’ll do in the future!
Gosh you’re fun and adorable to watch!!! You have a lot of personality :) my hair is the same with manipulation. I don’t know if it’s as wavy as yours though!
Thanks Jannelle. Really informative video. We have the same hair and curl type so I’ll try this. One question, did you still scrunch your hair after the routine to make the curls come back? Thanks
I didn’t scrunch like normal. What I did do was lay my palm flat and then lifted my hair up to my scalp. Same concept of scrunching just with open fist. Did this just 3 times around my head just to help with lift! I had filmed it but was at a weird angle so you couldn’t see it well 😂 I didn’t want to go to overboard with scrunching to give a more clear result!
hey i love ur videos and i recently just figured out i have wavy/curly hair... my hair is driving me nuts though, because the top part of my hair is way curlier than underneath which is just an ugly wave... do you have any tips?
It’s pretty normal to have mixed patterns. Mine is the opposite, wavy up top and more spirals underneath. I personally go for more natural looking styles and products that feel like I have none in as it helps the two patterns blend. If you think it may be due to damage can try Olaplex and/or bond curl from Curlsmith to help strengthen it!
Just trying to get used to the Denman brush but this is a great option so I don't just feel like a semi-failure every wash... i can balance out the "WTF" and "oooh fancy" results! lol Also, super fan girl... I'll be in Philly for a cousins wedding in OCtober and the girly nerd in me wishes you'd do some sort of meet up. Nevermind it's a Pandemic and who knows how many fans live in just the Philly area. hah :)
@@JannelleOShaughnessy MInnesota. My dad grew up in Philly and one of my second cousins is getting married so it'll be a really fun reunion....IF COVID stays at bay. I may end up going out separate for what I call a 'Death tour" as I've recently gotten into ancestry and would be super cool to visit old addresses of my past relatives to feel life in their areas! My uncle is in Media and I'd stay with him and he'd be my drinking buddy lol (A 60 year old bachelor.) I'm 45 and he wears me out! haha
So you're able to (at least somewhat) control your cowlick? I'm not sure if I have one unbelievably wonky cowlick, or more like a cluster of 3 (which I suspect is the case), but I have a lock of hair that's just past the center of my head (so sorta at the start of my crown) that falls straight back, even though the hair on either side goes to either side, and then there's 2 little sections directly under that section, so the center of the crown, that grow almost directly to the right, even though logically this should all be reversed. There is NO controlling this that I have found, and if I even attempt to part it differently, best case scenario it just refuses and worst case (and what usually happens) is all 3 little sections fray out near my scalp and turn into a matted nightmare. My super long way of asking if I should just tough this out no matter what and maybe I can train my hair to just stop it! Just stop being so stubborn back there?
I never can completely control my cowlick, but heavier layers and styling techniques do help! Also root clips! For example my cowlick is at the back crown of my head and pushes my hair side to side. Once I’m done diffusing I’ll clip the parts that separate together so they can set in that position and it helps keep them directed down my back vs pushing forward and to the sides. Hope that makes sense.
I need a dupe for the Ouidad - $26 - and I get a discount because I have a cosmetologist's license. For $26, I expect it to make me taller and thinner! ; )
Thank you for checking in! I’m okay! Just needed a legit break. I’ve taken smaller ones in the past but stayed present on IG or vice versa. First time since I’ve started 3ish years ago that I’ve taken a fullllllll on break. I’ll resume videos in the near future, I miss y’all and looking forward to what I can share with y’all after having some me time! ❤️❤️❤️
