This is a very helpful video for someone (me) trying to emulate the most efficient movements to use with a scythe. Thank you for recording and posting it!
My dad and I used to mow two fields near our house with scythes. Make no mistake, it's hard work! You will build your core, lats, shoulders and arms from doing this. Also make sure to wear good-fitting work gloves (you'll still need to build calluses on your hands, I found that the space between my thumb and index finger tended to rub a lot). It's very peaceful, unless the flies are bad, and not inhaling engine fumes is a plus.
You can mow very short grass with a scythe, if it's sharp enough and you press the blade down flat on the ground. If you do that, you can mow grass an inch or two high. It's like shaving the ground.
Thank You Botan. Because of these videos from you and some others my new homestead will not hear the sound of a tractor (with a sickle bar and rake on it) for a few more years. At 57, I expect I'll need a tractor sooner or later, but with this kind of workout, I think we can go with later. Who needs a gym if you start you day like this? I'm currently in Ukraine with me wife (working immigration) and have been buying Euro style scyth blades for $10 or less. I figure its a good idea to have a few el cheapos to practice peening on before I destroy a $100 blade. :)
Привіт я також з України. В прифронтовому місті. Тримаю кролей, кошу сіно. Не той в нас час щоб сто баксів на косу витрачати. На барахолка можна недорого придбати досить гарну і надійну косу.
I have never used a scythe before, I don't even think I've seen one in person. I'm nopt sure how I ended up watching these videos of cutting with scythes but man does it look cool and fun, I want one now haha.
This is my favorite comment to date. Yes, a good scythe is cool AND fun! Many of my customers have told me it's their favorite way to start their day. It gets you revved up and feeling good, and clears your head. Plus, you are accomplishing something.
If you do it right like the gent in the vid, you notice he is standing upright and not crouching...you will find you won't end up with a rotten sore back after the day's work. When I borrow my friend's scythe sometimes, I find I get the job done easier.Notice the angle he has on his scythe blade so he can sweep it well in front of him to get that 180 degree wide sweep. The European blade is so much easier than the antiquated British, and American scythes, and much lighter too. I don't believe in working too hard...but the job gets done quicker as you are not tiring so earlier.
Gardens of Versailles were mown this way, even trimmings. One man can do 3 acres in a hard day, tho it takes rather less effort than you might think. My neighbors think Im nuts! Still, maintaining a close relationship with a good blade is elemental, v satisfying. Thank goodness for diamond sharpeners! BTW, buy a good one.
I've had some comments before on this video, asking if there was a scythe that cuts in both directions, so you can get an equal workout on both sides. Once upon a time there was such a scythe. See it in this historical film Hämeenkyrön heinänteko. Peltotöitä vuodelta 1936 at 5:00
It is easy on the back because the blade stays on the ground throughout the entire cutting swing (in both directions)!!! You never lift the blade off of the ground if you are scythying correctly.
ok, I'll bite 5.21 hours per acre?? Very calming and rhythmic!. I've got a 2 wheeled tractor and 60 inch sickle bar. One big advantage I see with the scythe is the ready made windrow you leave. Sickle bar leaves the cuttings randomly placed requiring a lot of raking to get it back to the place your scythe leaves it. I wouldn't be surprised if it wouldn't take as much time to do the raking as the scything you're doing. Great video!
Repetitive motions like this makes it easy to calm the mind and enter Zen. But then again, if you know what you are doing, you could enter a state of Zen doing pretty much anything.
need to buy of of theses! where can I get one? I am going to be using one of these on a property that people help ! They do not know how to mow their lawn
I have a personal collection of over a hundred blades, but I only need 3. (shhh, don't tell my wife!) A 60-65cm Bavarian style blade, for trimming and difficult mowing conditions; a 75-85cm long hook-nosed blade, like in the video above, for full out, long field strokes; and a 40-50cm light bush blade for mowing thick woody stemmed weeds and brambles. No, I haven't worn out a blade yet.
Just wondering how many scythes you have? How long would an average blade last you, have you ever worn one out? I think my scythe will last me a life time lol
awesome sound as its cuts through the grass. bought one to cut a new path through for me and this old boy as we both walk our dogs round near the river bank and as nearby land was used for a new road so the council moved the gypsies horses so the path is not trodden anymore. think I have about 1.5 mile to cut 😵
Yes, but blade selection is very limited. I know a couple, the exact same height, one left and one right-handed, and they each have their own scythe. When they mow together, they switch off every ten minutes, to get a more balanced workout.
I heard lawnmowers outside and that got me Googling what people used to do before these loud monstrosities took over. I need to move to the country and get me a scythe...
Just a matter of time before Joe Rogan starts selling these..." You get into zen state and you mow your lawn and its really good for your body son!! We also sell killerbee honey! Eat some Alpha Brain and go mow that shit son!'"
"How long will it take to mow an acre?" Based on a 7 inch advancement to complete one acre: Total path length: 3,960 feet Total number of strokes needed: 6,788.6 Number of hours to complete one acre based on a 7 inch advancement: 4.53 hours

I can honestly say that I could watch this all day.
I love that sound. You have great skill.
I don't see why everyone is so mesmerized by this. I have to do it a couple times a summer. It's just like mowing your lawn in comparison.
This is a very helpful video for someone (me) trying to emulate the most efficient movements to use with a scythe. Thank you for recording and posting it!
No forget the rest. This is the best video on the whole web!

that looks painful on the back...
@@steinshaw2490 looks can be deceiving. There is an old saying that states; don't believe everything you hear and only half of what you see.

Do you golf? Golf was invented by farmers and this motion shows a close connection. Mesmerizing
Hahaha

Are these practical on steep inclines? eg. 30%. Thanks for the video.
I watched my dad do this many years ago. I had to order one the other day.
Works on a field that is sloped and not flat?
Yes, it does.
Would of been nice to see a closeup of the scythe.

Great video! Cheers :)
lovely property.

This was really peaceful
The Scandinavians had one. It was a scythe that you mowed a stroke one way, then flipped it over and mowed back the other way.
Totally fantastic. Thanks!
This video made me realise how onomatopoeic the name 'scythe' really is.
thats some good Core work right there
8.8 ft^2 a stroke @ 8in per pass
264 ft^2/min @ 30 strokes/min
2640 ft^2/hr (5min cutting + 1 min hone = 10 cycles per hour)
(43560 ft^2/ac) / 2640 ft^2/hr
~16.5hrs
I wish I could shave like that!
What has this to do with Zen?
Yes, though if the grass is really mature, I like to mow it when it is dry. It takes longer to mow but saves time in the tedding.
I have a personal collection of over a hundred blades, but I only need 3. (shhh, don't tell my wife!) Botan: I was on your website looking for info on workshops. It didn't look like you had scheduled yet for 2013??
side note if anyone is an ergonomics or familiar with bio mechanics is this actually a safe design?

Well.. Now I know how to actually use one.
Today was a good day.
Do you just leave the tall cut grass on top or rake it up???
I make hay out of it.
How many hit points can it do?
very relaxing video if u listen to only the audio
that would be so sharp
Is there a left-handed scythe? I feel like you need to work both sides.
Thanks for calculating that!
The Chi is strong with this one.
my back hurts just watching this
I actually watched four minutes and forty-four second of this. [8]
Yes, but blade selection is very limited. I know a couple, the exact same height, one left and one right-handed, and they each have their own scythe. When they mow together, they switch off every ten minutes, to get a more balanced workout.
This is my asmr. Sounds like me eating capn, crunch.
i should have done this for my ergo assignment zzzzzz that twisting
I would mow every day if I had a scythe.
I mow every other day with one because I’m that slow.
"Peace is Every Step"
I heard lawnmowers outside and that got me Googling what people used to do before these loud monstrosities took over. I need to move to the country and get me a scythe...
Why would you not wear a black robe to do this?
Do you also go into other peoples' houses and break their pot?
Man that must build some arm strength...
Runescape level?
And by the time he finishes its harvesting season again
Problem is if your making hay, you actually need to spread out the grass after mowing, turn, then put in rows later. Thats my experience anyway :)
now.. put on a black robe during a blue moon and repeat this near a highway :D
Some people call it a sling blade, I call it a kaiser blade.
I don't think the back hand would be efficient as you might think, also his grips look like there optimized for only one direction
But that wouldn't be nearly as calming to watch...
viewers might like to listen to my rendition of the Mowing of a field by Hilaire Belloc
This video made laugh for some reason.
Gotta feed Tina!
The plot thickens at 2:46
screw getting a lawn mover, im going leave my grass long and tall for my scythe
Wait for it...
This looks fun as fuck
Mow short in the morning when it's tender.
because it's too hot out
good pot farm territory
Must get huge obliques from doing this all day
"Ha...Haya...HAAAaaa..."
Bet that's a work out and a half
mirin scythe
lol POWERFUL SCYTHE
My fav part was 4:43
Just a matter of time before Joe Rogan starts selling these..." You get into zen state and you mow your lawn and its really good for your body son!! We also sell killerbee honey! Eat some Alpha Brain and go mow that shit son!'"
My fingers hurt..well now your backs gonna hurt, cause you just pulled landscaping duty. Anyone elses fingers hurt?
Sun
Clearly this guy has never heard of John Deere before
like napoleon dynamite
Gotta feed Tina!
i like the part where he is cutting grass
I think I would just buy a few goats.
because you would scare everyone >_>

"How long will it take to mow an acre?"
Based on a 7 inch advancement to complete one acre:
Total path length: 3,960 feet
Total number of strokes needed: 6,788.6
Number of hours to complete one acre based on a 7 inch advancement: 4.53 hours
because he would probably start cooking under the sun
to not get shot by close farmers

Wish I could go do that instead of doing this marketing plan project bullshit.
I bet you have abs of steel.

I've been using my giant scythe all wrong.
Why don't you just buy a lawnmower?
hey, just get a lawn mower, dude.
This is the worst episode of Soul Eater I've ever seen.
wtf did i just watch???
