Thank you for pointing out to be aware about using potting mix with fertilizer already included. Because I was wondering why I kept getting fertilizer burn on my av. Now it all makes sense!
I’m very glad to have found your channel! I love the information that you share about what you have learned in the short time that you have been growing AVs. The success and failures really help other learn. Thank you!
Thank you for the video. Very didactic, I am going to use this product, Pro Mix BX to repot my AV. I only have 5 Av, so I think is cheaper and more practical to use Pro Mix BX than prepare your soil formula( which it is awesome too). Thanks again.
My plants like coconut coir and hate peat moss. I nothing knew about ph level and a lot of AV and leaves were killed. I got coconut coir and mixes with some perlit, some java rocks and my plants are doing well. They are getting blossom! I will try to get soil by your recommendation. Thank for your sharing.
That's great! Do you top water or wick water? I tried using coconut coir for wick watering mix and it kept the mix too moist, so I switched back to peat moss, mixed with perlite. Might also depend on the air humidity in the growing area - mine is usually 40-60%.
@@grayturtleviolets By wicking watering. If I take a long cord and bottle is pretty deep, soil isn’t so wet, that’s normal. I don’t throw away bottles from supplements, I use them for wicking watering.
@@Nura4N That's a good idea, to use tall reservoirs, so that part of the wick is exposed to the air inside! Thank you for sharing! I might try coconut coir again, maybe a different brand. The first time I tried, I just bought whatever was the cheapest from amazon, will pay attention this time!
@@grayturtleviolets I get coconut coir in Home Depot. Usually the store sell it online. The customers just make choice how to get it by delivery or by coming in store by self. I made online payment and picked it up by my self. Burpee is a brand name. That’s not costly. I think it’s cheaper than on Amazon. However, I’d like to grow AV in peat moss soil. :-) I will try.
Hello , I’m Tim . You have a excellent collection of violets. I’m looking for a variety called : Snuggles little Girl. You wouldn’t happen to have one of those violets or know someone who does ? Thank you , Tim
Horticultural vermiculite helps create air pockets in the soil less growing medium, promoting healthy root growth. However, because it is known to retain moisture, it is recommended to reduce ratio of vermiculite in the AV potting mix, in particular, for wick-watering. Greenhouse Megastore has great info about its benefits, in the Vermiculite description: www.greenhousemegastore.com/supplies/soil-and-soil-amendments/vermiculite?returnurl=%2fsearch%3fq%3dvermicultie
Great question! There are several symptoms indicating nutrient deficiency, here is a good read by AVSA describing them, check it out: africanvioletsocietyofamerica.org/learn/violets-101/2729-2/

I would recommend pasteurizing, just in case. My first experience using a commercial potting mix (not the Dr. Earth, but a different brand), before I started making my own, ended with gnat infestation, so definitely pasteurize.

Yep, same thing happened to my plants when I was a newbie! Happy growing!

Thank you! I do have Snuggles Little Girl, she is featured in July monthly blooms video, at 7:23: ruclips.net/video/QV0V1jP6OPo/видео.html.
I have a question: what products(recipe) do you recommend when starting growing African Violets? Please help me!
I recommend ProMix BX - check out my video recipe here: ruclips.net/video/pLLcZOfIo-E/видео.html
Do you sale your African Violet plants or cuttings for propagation purposes?
Does anyone know, if she sales her plants?😊

How do you tell, visually, when the plant lacks nutrient?
