It's interesting how a traditional horror movie character victim turns into this chainsaw hand badass come the 2nd film seems very original for it's time. Were there other films like this?
Something that not a lot of people mention is that even though ash can be a moron at times, he has a real knack for mechanics. He built a chainsaw hand, a robot hand out of plate armor, and built a deadite slaying machine out of his car
What makes Ash great to me is his actual character growth and personality. He’s more than just a quotable action hero. He’s a real person, who was scared at first and grew to be tougher over the movies. While also having lots of trauma as the TV series shows. He’s just a guy who wants to live a normal life, which makes him very human.
That’s how some of the best heroes are. They start out afraid, naïve, cocky, inexperienced, and overall have no idea what they’re doing. But overtime they grow and learn, slowly shaping themselves into the hero they were meant to be. The best example I can think of aside from Ash is Luke Skywalker. He starts out as just some random farm boy but over time he learns and develops and becomes the ultimate Jedi.
I mean look at the end of Ash VS Evil Dead season 1. He takes the deal that Ruby gives him just so he can live a normal, retired life and get his Pablo back. He's just tired of fighting.
@@theparrishshow9803 Another example would be Sam from Lord of the Rings. A simple gardener who is nervous around his crush, yet sticks by his friend no matter the perils in their journey. In the end he becomes the only ringbearer to reject the ring, defeats a giant spider single-handedly, carries Frodo up the mountain after the arduous journey and fighting they've been through, and finally marries his crush in the end. From a shy gardiner to the badass who saved the world all in one story.
Great evil boss: Ash williams made an arm in the middle of nowhere in the 1600's! random Zombie: you may not like him great evil one but that guys got groove
Yeah we a know ash is a bad ass with one liners but we also know he is a sad man after losing his friends and love of his life. His life turning complete shit. Kinda makes you feel for the guy.
Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun. Such a quotable movie. Pure gold. Honestly though, one of the moments that always makes me laugh is when he breaks the skeleton over his knee and it's the glass break sound effect. Slays me every time.
It's shown that he has many spare in the car's trunk Edit: and probably also recycled used shells and fill it with the leftover gunpowder he made for the bombs
What makes Ash one of the memorable and badass horror characters is his gradual transformation from an ordinary worker from S-Mart supermarket to ruthless Deadite killer. If you remember, Ash was average guy from Michigan who loved normal life, hanging out and spending time with friends and with girls. However, that night in the cabin completely turned his life around in worst way. He lost his friends, his sister and girlfriend, lost his right arm, suffered severe mental trauma because of all this nightmare, was twice possessed by Kandarian Demon and almost turned into Deadite, trapped in time, caught in the Middle Ages. And if in the first film Ash was presented as scared, confused survivor, then by middle of "Evil Dead 2" the experience with Necronomicon and death of his beloved Linda finally turned him from coward into a insane, confident and brave anti-hero, known for his rude disposition and cynical humor, who mercilessly slays Deadites to meat with his favorite chainsaw and boomstick. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell have created the most iconic and groovy horror character in the legendary trilogy.
In the Tabletop RPG - not canon, I know - Ash is stated to be a 'Promised One', which is essentially just a fancy way of saying he was fated to become a mortal enemy of the Necronomicon, the Deadites and the forces of the dead from the very start, and simply grew into his own when circumstances triggered said fate into manifesting. In some of the comics, that seems to be implied, as wherever the Necronomicon goes, Ash follows to stop it whether he wants to or not, including bringing in other versions of himself from other universes when he fails. Again, I know, not canon, but I thought it was pretty freaking cool. His overconfidence and arrogance makes quite a bit of sense when one gets told you're literally fated to be an eternal pain in the ass to the forces of darkness. XD
In the 1st Evil Dead Ash is still his unique personality but when everything starts going to hell of course he's scared, all of them were. In the 2nd the Evil just pushes him to the edge, almost totally breaking his sanity with the horror so he decides to just go down swinging and that's when he starts being himself again because the fear was gone. So Ash was always a bit of a tough guy but the Cabin made him the legendary bad ass we love.
This is why I love the classic Evil Dead over the reboot. The sheer charisma and charm that Bruce Campbell brings as Ash Williams is unmatched. Very few horror film protagonists (or horror film characters in general) come even remotely close to matching him.
What are you talking about! There's nothing more charismatic than a know-nothing-know-it-all woke teenage girl that has a "Feminism is not a bad word" poster on her room door and whines to her single mom about her "eat the rich" shirt not being cleaned in time for her protest. (Evil Dead rise had good gore/deadites, but AWFUL characters)
I think he's got a little Deadite still in him, but he's the only one who, once driven to madness, could actually control it. It would definitely explain his jump in badassery from Evil Dead 1 to the rest of the series.
@@fierysmile2929 I've always theorized it's because of his "Chosen One" status more than anything. If Ash still had some deadite in him, he would be more susceptible to the Evil Dead than average folk, but because he's destined to defeat the evil after Army Of Darkness, Ash can fight back and survive while everyone else dies(IMO, a canonical plot armor if you will). It can also explain why Kelly, Pablo, and Brandy 30 years later can survive the deadites, because Ash' in canon plot armor can protect them(Sorry for my rant, I just really like the Evil Dead series).
