Former combat pilot of World War II Don Benton, who operates a tourism business in Hong Kong, declines to take a political stance and turns down an opportunity to act as an intelligence agent for the US government.
When Benton receives a request from Mao Tai Tai, an elderly Chinese woman who essentially adopted him during the war, asking him to look for her lost grandson.

Hong Kong served as the filming location for the Passport to China movie. First shown in Technicolor in Great Britain in December 1960 under the title Visa to Canton, the movie was first exhibited in black and white in the US. Richard Basehart, the male protagonist, had acted in several high-profile feature films during the 1950s, but by this time in his career, his chances had diminished.
