  • Julia is using a simple brain and smoke tan to craft a home made buckskin skirt. The process could get a little messy but stick around and things get beautiful by the end.
Brain tanning is an ancient but still practical technology, given that buckskin is such an amazing material and modern tanning techniques use pretty harsh chemicals. The basic materials are the hide, brain, wood ash and wood smoke. You can definitely do this at home, especially if you live in an apartment, and if you do please send pics or videos!

Bobby Baxter but the second was leather because the first dried up and broke off.
Lesson from Adam and Eve’s trial and error: don’t wear vegetable clothing, they don’t last.

Clothing you can wear. A'dam and Chavah(Eve) used the fig leaves to cover their parts they now wanted to keep private. Yet, those leaves were not worn as clothing. Is a shield clothing or is it just covering a portion of your body?
Bereshith/Genesis 3:21 - Unto A'dam and to his woman did Eloah Yahuah make coats of skins and clothed them. Thus it is written as to what the first clothing was and is still for many of this world the same today. Proof of today is the cute buckskin skirt.

Usually, if I'm brain tanning, I just leave the fur on and tan a pelt. I'f I'm making leather, I putrefy the fur to slip, wash, bat if possible (Gross), and then vegetable tan until it's tanned fully.

@@austinwalker4936 I've done it before. You need a dead deer, deer brains, a pole/leaning tree, a sharp edge on a piece of wood and or a semi rough rock. If you don't have the brains you can use eggs. Also instead of a frame you can stretch and rough it up on a wide post driven into the ground/ dead tree stump about 3-4 feet tall. Lots of sanding stretching and roughing up to make it fluffy and soft. Kinda feels like a dogs ear lol

Very cool, those old primitive skills are invaluable, and may be needed by many if or when the modern world falls apart. Society's current ways are unsustainable. People used to take what they needed to survive and nothing more as well as finding a use for every part of the animals they killed for food and supplies. Stay interested in practicing and acquiring those primitive skills. Good work!

From someone who has tanned about a dozen deer hides nice work! I know how much hard work goes into it and how cold it is in the winter doing it..I have two hides Frozen in Ash water as I speak..if you screen your charcol out you can get your hides to come out nice and white! That was a big hide too lots of stretching. You can also use eggs and certain soaps to tan instead of the brains but I've never had access to the brains so can't compare on softness. Really love your videos and your family just had my first baby girl at 25 and after seeing your girls know she can be just as awesome! You guys rock keep up the great work.

Im in the England uk and 62 yrs old, ive learned alot watching your efforts today, thank you for sharing
Take care Stay safe and keep it lit.👍 God Bless your family.

I love the natural confidence that these girls exude. No matter the subject or project. They know that they can do anything. They are strong survivors. Wonderful.

Now that is a grand skirt. That young lady should be very proud of herself . Tanning a hide is a very long and hard thing to do the finished product will last for many years . You go girl.great video
