I learned a lot about the 1970s through this video, even though I knew some about it already. I saw this video when I was 6 or 7. Fast forward to when I was 11, and I had started Secondary School. In TD, we were making time capsules, and we were given the task of watching this Blue Peter episode. I was probably the only one in the class who had seen the episode several years prior.
Dream team. Singleton, Purvis & Noakes (+ Christopher Trace) John Noakes was a one off. Barmy, fearless & so likeable. Absolutely wonderful. 62 this makes me feel young again.
Err Cassette tapes were around in 1971 actually. My uncle had one to compliment his record player. In fact the first cassette tape was introduced in September 1963. In fact you can see a Cassette deck on the record player behind him!
Blimey this takes me back! I remember this episode so vividly and me and my mum being really fascinated by it all (1971 was her Blue Peter era) Hardly possible to believe that this was 13 years ago...
There really should be a minimum 100 year rule for opening "time capsules". Here we have one opened barely 30 years later. The show plays up the fact that we can "see how we lived and what was important to us back then", then proceeds, via precise video and audio documentation, to tell us EXACTLY what we were thinking and doing back then. They then graciously bring back some hosts, very much alive, to confirm said documentation. Then....they dig up the time capsule. /face-palm
wow, and this is now 12 years old. i still have a minidisc player, and have you noticed the 2000 presenters look like they could be in steps? haha! haven't watches blue peter in years but is there any one direction lookalikes in it yet?!
Jesus its nearly time to open the 2029 one again , I can't believe it's had a pandemic and war so far in the 2020s . Hope they still do it as not sure the show is still going I watched it in the 80s and 90s and remember miss hill and Connie huq . It's fliipin a PC world now and it probably gives a different message now .
I don't remember the 1971 time capsule as it was two days before my first birthday and I was still in the pram - too young to understand what was happening.
There were no cassettes? Yes there was! They came out in the 1960s. Pre-recorded cassettes were not so common in 1971 but record shops certainly did sell them.
Oh God, this can't be ten years ago can it? Surely I'm not that old? I was seven when this one was broadcast, and from what I recall was talking about it for weeks

I remember watching them burying the 1971 time capsule. I was 8 at the time.

Hang on, hang on... He said there were no cassettes in 1971. There bloody well was!
My late dad had loads of cassettes from the late 60s, mainly bought at K.G. which used to be on Shepherds Bush market.
This Blue Peter edition was recorded on Tuesday 4th January 2000 but it was transmitted on Friday 7th January
Talking about 70s fashion when their clothes in 2000 were the worst things in the world
If only they could see 2020 they'd certainly opt to stay in 1971!
That looks like a nice red Triumph TR6 behind them.
I was six months old when the capsule was buried in 1971, but grew up knowing about it Reading my big bro's blue peter albums :-)

By 1971 the majority of households had a colour tv.

Well you never know, look at the crime, unemployment, threat of nuclear war, etc.
Why are the '2000' presenters SHOUTING!
the tiger used to scare me!!
The cars
Erm, what are they gonna do now the Blue Peter garden is being sold off...?
@harj2009 No, I assume this was a VHS recording which has deteriorated in the 10 years since it was recorded.
heh you guys feeling old yet? this was 12 years ago!
@TheRenaissanceman65 hahaha
Much of what the presenters said about 1971 was totally wrong! Anyone alive at that time will testify to that.
I was eight years old back in the year 2000.
RHLSTP!
1971 time capsule doesn't look deep enough!
The girls on this show can't say their R's
,i was seven when they buried it,how old do you think i feel?:)
She sounds like liz sladen RIP
I always thought Connie was Pakistani, it turned out she is Bangladeshi!
DJ Newt Any reason for the unpleasant language?
Liz Clegg What do you mean?
DJ Newt I see you've amended your original comment. Well done.
Liz Clegg Thanks.
4:57 That’s Right. Unless you were wealthy, you couldn’t get Colour TV.
This was flawed, they filmed all that shit going in , in the first place, so it was no great surprise what was in there!!! Should have kept it secret
