I wanted to be Esmeralda sooooo bad when I was a little girl! ♥️ The fact she was animated in that beautiful tint of brown. That alone positively impacted so many Brown and Black girls and fostered our love for Disney.
*Frollo sniffs Esmerelda's hair* Esmerelda: What are you doing? Frollo: I was imaging a rope around your beautiful neck. Esmerelda: I know what you're thinking. Me: DAMN HE BUSTED!!
I have always hated or should I say “ deeply loathed “ Frollo “ . He was in fact a very “ evil “ man hiding behind the robes of righteousness. As a Christian, I think the roles should have been reversed, he should have been at the stake instead of Esmerelda .
The film is fantastic however the flaws that exist in the movie (ie the gargoyles) are significant enough that it ends up really taking away from movie.
That is very true. It’s the one Disney movie that just doesn’t get the box office reviews it should have. Some people think that it’s historically inaccurate, and it’s derision from the original story, was not done very well.
I think its because its clearly a more dark and serious story, so marketing it towards children decreases its popularity. Obviously children aren't going to enjoy/understand a story like H.O.N.D. as much as maybe Aladdin or The Lion King. Basically, hunchback should have had an initial teen rating at least.
The family Phoebus saved wasn't actually a gypsy family, they were just accused of being so, as they sheltered them. He saved them because he refused to burn the house as he was told to, knowing the family to be innocent.
Esmeralda is one of the reasons I prefer to call the women in Disney films "heroines" instead of "princesses". Many of the company's strong female characters never actually become royalty, or they're never openly acknowledged as such, but that doesn't mean they're not worthy of being looked up to.
+Danielle Musella Aurora was rescued though so she wouldn't be a heroine. I love Sleeping Beauty yes, but she was rescued and didn't do anything heroic, neither did Cinderella.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is full of fantasy scenes to prevent tragedies. Esmeralda of RKO was more cautious about getting what she wanted and more realistic.
That is something I noticed by the mid-90's I think that Disney started making their female leads strong and independent. Frollo is one of the evilest villains Disney ever came up with and Tony Jay was the perfect voice actor for Frollo. I believe Esmerelda was the first Disney female to be a strong and Independent woman.
Hannah Skeldon Judge Frollo he's really evil his song Hellfire chills and the goosebumps though Tony Jay god rest his soul voice of Judge Frollo from Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame an amazing and chilling performance singing Hellfire Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame an amazing disney film about the music and disney animation of course Judge Frollo he's one of the best disney villains mostly Judge Frollo he's really special about remembering Tony Jay god rest his soul
Frollo is def the worst villain ever in Disney. I think Ariel is the first strong independent woman with others following. Little Mermaid came out in 1989.
LmaoMoni She wanted to become a human wayy before she met Eric. Ursula was able to use Eric as a tipping point as Ariel was in a fragile state of mind (her father had just destroyed all her treasures) so she probably believed that this was the only way to become a human.
Mabel Pines It's ironic this is coming from the mouth of Mabel Pines. Don't let them hear you. Remember what your creator Alex Hirsch said, "The Mouse will come and find you..." Still, totally true! LOL Such an underrated movie.
The Hunchback was more successful in the Box office than Pocahontas, TLM, Hercules, Mulan and B&B outside of US, sadly, it didn't perform well in the US being th 8th highest grossing film from the Disney renaissance in the US, 4th Internationally and 6th overall.
"Heaven's Light" reflected Quasimodo's love for Esmeralda, which was pure. "Hellfire" reflected Frollo's lust for Esmeralda, which was said in the song, "sinful".
It was more like Quasimodo's infatuation with her. In that song, he was idealizing her. The reason Esmeralda ended up with Phoebus was because one, she was actually attracted to Phoebus and her affection for Quasimodo is strictly platonic. Two, out of the three men pining for her, Phoebus was the only who saw her for the human being she really is. Quasi saw as her an angel while Frollo saw her as a demonic temptress.
@@travisboutilier2220 What about her feelings? Do they not matter? Does she not have the right to be with who she wants? Esmerelda is a human being and Quasimodo is not entitled to a romantic relationship with her just because he's nice. She is not a prize to be won. It may have been romantic on Quasi's side but again it was completely platonic on Esmerelda's side. Besides Quasi does end up with Madeline in a sequel. Esmerelda is not the only woman Quasi is capable of loving. Besides this is the Disney version of Hunchback of Notre Dame. And frankly Disney decided to have Esmerelda end up with Phoebus. Think it's unfair and you don't like it? Go read a fanfiction, better yet go write your own story.
@@mistydorahernandez6528 They matter less than his, he suffered more then she did. not when it upsets someone else. i don't care if she a human being and Quasimodo should be, he deserves it. it should have been romantic on her side. Madeline wasn't good enough. Esmeralda should be the only one for him. I don't care if it's the Disney version. it was a very stupid decision. there is no fanfiction that's has them become a couple and I don't know what to write.
@@travisboutilier2220 I don't know what your parents taught you but allow me to give you some harsh truths you spoiled brat. Having a tragic past also does not entitle you to another person's feelings. Quasimodo doesn't deserve anyone unless that person returns his feelings. That's just the way it is! Also you should care if someone is a human being with their own thoughts, feelings, and viewpoints because if you don't care about another person's feelings then that means you don't really love them. When you truly love someone you'd want them to be happy, even if it's not with you. Also that's your opinion and like I said, if you don't like the Disney version, write your own!
I adore Esmeralda; she’s literally one of my favourite characters ever. I was shocked about her death. 💀 I’m shocked that Esmeralda was a Disney Princess; I think she should have kept that title but I know that there’s a chance that it may not be possible since the family of Victor Hugo may still hold the rights to the original story. That’s just my opinion but I think there may other explanations for this. Great video as always, Issac. 🦋✨
Sez Francis She was never a princess I don’t know why people always have to make women who are not royalty princesses just leave them the way they are.
Esmeralda should totally STILL be a Disney Princess! I feel that she would be a much better role model than a few of the original princesses and she is just such a strong character! Love all your videos, Isaac, and I'm always excited to see what you come up with! Thanks for keeping our days magical!
I think that she didn't end up marrying Quasimodo because in the beginning when it says, "Who is the monster and who is the man"; he didn't hate Phoebis for being her true love. In fact, he was even happy they were getting married. Frollo on the other hand; only wanted Esmeralda for his desire for her; and he pretty much sent the city into chaos with his corruption.
He should have hated Phoebus for being her true love, it's not fair that he gets to marry her and Quasimodo doesn't. he should have been furious with them for getting married and beg Esmeralda not to marry him.
I remember reading somewhere that quasimodo not ending up with esmeralda just adds to his goodness and the point of him not being a monster because he's still willing to go out of his way for esmeralda and risk his life, even though it breaks his heart for her to choose another.
@@travisboutilier2220 I don't know if Esmeralda even knew if quasimodo had feelings for her, let alone serious feelings, so I don't think she even had any idea that she broke Quasi's heart. And even if she did have some knowledge that Quasi had feelings, she clearly loved him dearly as a friend and was willing to do a lot for him, so it's good that Quasi tried to put aside the hurt in order to help her. It's not like she just needed a hand as well. Her life was in danger so it's good that Quasi stepped up.
@@emmad.176 She broke his heart anyway, so it doesn't matter if she knew or not. loving him as a friend is nothing compared to loving him romantically. he shouldn't have put the hurt aside, he should have had a grunge against her. her life wasn't worth saving.
Um yes!! Esmeralda should be a Disney princess!! She sets a better role model for little girls than most of the princesses. Showing that strength and standing up for what is right is good!
@@PrincessMavenKittyDarkholmeeh different times. Snow White and aurora aren’t role models, but Cinderella could be since she freed herself from her abusive family and just happened to do so by a ball
He was engaged to a woman named fleur de Liz ... that’s the flower that represents France... maybe he was engaged to his country, cause he was some sort of a knight? Part of the army ... 🤨🤨🤨
jocelyn palomo // actually Phoebus isn’t that much of a gentleman in the actual story of Victor Hugo. He wanted to marry Fleur de Lys solely because she was rich (she was 14 too btw) and only lusted after Esmerelda
Theory: Maybe Esmeralda was a teenager when she lost her parents and moved to Paris to live with Clopin. If she were like 15-17 when she lost them then maybe if she wasn't fully an adult she would be on the cusp of adulthood.
Is likely that Esmeralda is Quasimodos older sister? He was the son of Gypsies. She might have been sent to the court of miracles for refuge, and her parents had to stay behind since the mother was going into labor delivering Quasimodo. They never arrived at the court of miracles since her mother was killed by Frollo on the stoop of Notre Dame, and her father was sentenced to death for trespassing. Clopin raised her at that point, and her bitterness towards Frollo and those who oppose her people grew and grew.
Esmeralda was such a powerful role model for me growing up as a half Romani girl with big dark hair, tan skin, and green eyes. To this day she is the only character that I have ever seen my people represented in a way that wasn’t dirty or disgraceful. While her “traditional dress” is WAY off, I think her sense of justice and compassion represent Romani values well. She will always be a princess to me.
Esmeralda SHOULD be a Disney Princess! She is a strong a smart woman and deserves it!!! I love your vids Isaac, you are awesome and fun to listen to and that can be hard to find in a theorist. Keep doing what you do and you have a magical day as well!
I guess she is a cultural & ethical "princess". So that is why Esmeralda is considered one. Demi Moore did a wonderful job singing and acting as her in the updated, Disney version.
I was under the impression that demi did the speaking voice and someone else did the singing - Heidi mollenhauer? (if I've spelt that correctly). Does demi sing in another version though? Either way esmeralda has an awesome voice :)
This may be my favorite video of yours so far. Great job! I forgot how much I loved Esmeralda when this movie came out. Too bad she isn’t a Disney princess anymore.
I love Esmeralda! I saw the movie for the first time not too long ago and I've fallen in love with it, the thrills, the energy, the music, the strength shown by Esmeralda, it was fantastic! I think Esmeralda should be an official Disney Princess because she's kind, she's strong, she's brave, she's independant, she has the bravery to stand up to Frollo and help Quasimodo, she stands for what's right, she helps others, and she's sassy. She's a great role modle for little girls and boys and she deserves to join the official line up with Ariel, Jasmine, Belle, Rapunzel, and so forth. This is a great video, thanks for helping me learn more about this inspiring and beautiful gypsy. Love you Esmeralda!
Isaiah Adams watch Hunchback of Notre Dame the Musical. You can find the whole thing on RUclips. It's amazing and retains the intense dark themes of the novel.
Don't go to the nowel back. It lready have bunch of film adaptations. If is live action of the cartoon, they should follow the cartoon. I think the book had worst message, with a disgusting ending. The cartoons message is more likeable.
The Hunchback of notre dame is such a underatted movie. Its so good and one of the best Disney music where a woman is as strong as a man. Esmeralda is not only strong as hell but she is the one who goes against Frollo before others. I think it needs more regocnition...
I love your analysis of why Quasimodo didn't end up with Esmeralda! Great insight, comparing his perception of Esmeralda to Frollo's and how Phoebus had a more mature and objective understanding of who Esmeralda was.
I'm glad Disney made this film because it has an adult theme without being too heavy for children. It's a more realistic view of love, lust, abuse and the effects of trying to force a certain way of thinking onto another. It also exemplifies integrity in the Disney community and I would love to see you do more videos on it
Esmeralda's mother was a noble's daughter thus by technicality so was she, but the mother was disgraced in the eyes of the nobles because she ran off with Esmeralda's father. It was the shoe that held the key to unlocking her identity not the emerald. I'm surprised that u didn't even mention the shoe, which in my mind does link her back not only to her parents but also to her princess heritage. Like Cinderella she becomes dispossessed of her true inheritance through deception and neglect. As u can tell I'm particularly fond of the Hugo version and while it doest have has happy an ending as Disney, it carries a far more intense and meaningful message..That true love and devotion, whether to an individual or a country, never dies! It lives in the lives of those touched by it..as evidenced by the reiterations of the story itself for example.
I am a firm believer in that Esmeralda should be a Disney princess. The common argument here is that she was desired by so many people, thus making her "inappropriate," but I think because she was so desirable and STILL respected herself enough to deny Frollo's offer sets an amazing example for children. They might not know what that means until they are older, but they will know eventually
Now Esmeralda is a person I can get behind! JUSTICE! The way she stood up to Frollo. Chills down the spine! The hypocrisy of Frollo's behaviour and actions to everyone he spoke to and how he treated people..disgusting and he needed to be accountable for it. When that scene comes up, I'm just screaming inside YES SPEAK UP and I'm so proud. She's one of the many Disney women who is so inspiring.
Someone may have pointed this out already, but it's driving me insane so I'm gonna say it. it's not "clop-in". It's pronounced "klo-pahn." You can see it in The Bells of Notre-Dame. He pronounces his own name, "klo-pahn."
I'd like to point out that in the book version, Esmeralda's skeleton is found by some people along with the skeleton of a man with a bent back. When the people try to separate the two, Quasimodo's body turns to dust, along with the girl's. This shows that they were ment to be together no matter the circumstances and that fate was always trying to bring them together.
Esmeralda deserves to be a princess far more than others because she shows true strength is caring for others and fighting for them while other princesses (especially new ones) are mostly just fighting for what they want to do regardless of the effect on others
Thank you SO SO much for sharing Esmeralda's story. This is one of my favorite Disney movies and she is one of my favorite strong female characters because of her strong morals and compassion. ^^
I wanna be friends with this guy. I feel no one could possibly apperciate Disney more than this guy. These videos are amazing and so insightful into the backstories of characters and their connections to their original tales. As someone who deeply studied Fairy Tales in college, this warms my soul. Keep up the good work, man!
I LOVE your explanation on why Esmeralda did not end up with Quasidmodo. If that's the case, then it would make sense why no (clear) explanation was given in the film
Should she be a princess? Let's see, she stood up for herself in the presence of a higher power, she saved peoples lives, and was willing to DIE for what she believed in. My answer: Goodness Gracias ALIVE YES!
Esmeralda is the most attractive Disney princess next to Pocahontas. Her dark wavy hair and those striking emerald eyes and her athletic curvy body are all just perfect.
Esmeralda is determined, clever, caring and fiercely fights for what she believes is right. She stands up for Quasimido after his public humiliation which is an act of heroism. Yep, somebody get a crown.
I can't get over this: Frollo: *sniff sniff* Esmeralda: What are you doing ? Frollo: I was imagining a rope around that beautiful neck of yours Esmeralda: I know what your were imagining I actually just can't. I tear up every time. Frollo, eat a Snickers, you just got busted
I have always been watching this video because of how much I consider Esmeralda as my most favorite Disney character but also the best animated heroine out of all the Disney Princesses.
I love Esmeralda she's my favourite Disney heroine: she's strong, defiant, rebellious, independent, outspoken, charitable, open-minded, generous, selfless, streetwise and compassionate.
I loved this movie when I was a kiddo! Thank you for sharing about Esmeralda! Oh and I love how you have Out There playing in the background! That was always my favorite song in this movie.

The bit in the movie where he tears up the card with the heart on it makes me cry 😭 I do like how quasimodo handles esmeralda's choice though. He's still willing to do anything for her :)
Yes she should I fell for as a kid seeing the movie she is character that always fascinates me i love disneys design of her wish they would do more with green eyed beauty and her dark skin is just everything.
Did you ever realize how similar Adam(Beast) and Tarzan look? There is a theory on Belle and Jane being relatives. But I noticed that the beast and Tarzan have a lot in common too. Could you theorize on that?😊
Apparently this is how Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame was supposed to end. It almost got a PG-13 rating. The filmmakers briefly considered having Quasimodo killed off, since that is his fate in the original novel. He was originally supposed to be stabbed by Frollo, then Esmeralda regains consciousness and tries to save him by killing Frollo. Phoebus was then supposed to meet up with them, and Quasimodo's last wish was to ring the bells one last time. They take him to the bells, then Esmeralda and Phoebus help him ring the bells as he dies. The final shot was going to include Esmeralda and Phoebus crying over their best friend as the people of Paris cheer for their success, unaware of Quasimodo's death. The filmmakers originally wanted Esmeralda to kill Judge Frollo in order to save Quasimodo. Esmeralda would've jumped onto the ledge then grabbed Quasimodo's hand. Judge Frollo would've attempted to kill Quasimodo with his sword then Esmeralda would've kicked Judge Frollo off the cathedral causing Frollo to fall to his death. This idea was ultimately abandoned, as having a heroine kill the villain was considered improper in a family film and may have gotten the film a PG-13 rating. www.imdb.com/title/tt0116583/trivia/?ref_=tt_trv_trv

Cinderella is worth looking up to, she was a hard worker who freed herself from an abusive family and gave herself a better life

Uh no.
Just....no.

YesI agree. Although, you *don't* need a sword to be "strong" or "independent". That's just fase.
Little Mermaid came out in 1989.
julijakeit she gives up her home and voice for a man
How is that independent
julijakeit in my opinion Mulan is the first strong princess...
LmaoMoni She wanted to become a human wayy before she met Eric. Ursula was able to use Eric as a tipping point as Ariel was in a fragile state of mind (her father had just destroyed all her treasures) so she probably believed that this was the only way to become a human.
Me: Disney, you speak of justice, yet you are cruel to those who weren't a Box office hit!
Disney: SILENCE!
me: JUSTICE!!
Mabel Pines
It's ironic this is coming from the mouth of Mabel Pines. Don't let them hear you. Remember what your creator Alex Hirsch said, "The Mouse will come and find you..."
Still, totally true! LOL Such an underrated movie.
The HackingBurger THANK U! 😂
The Hunchback was more successful in the Box office than Pocahontas, TLM, Hercules, Mulan and B&B outside of US, sadly, it didn't perform well in the US being th 8th highest grossing film from the Disney renaissance in the US, 4th Internationally and 6th overall.
Sloom Sama I know. Disney is a f@#k sometimes

@@mistydorahernandez6528 It's not fair that she was attracted to Phoebus and it didn't have to stay platonic. so what he saw her as?
She's a Disney Princess; just isnt considered one of the main ladies...

She dies ?!?!!

Esmeralda should totally STILL be a Disney Princess! I feel that she would be a much better role model than a few of the original princesses and she is just such a strong character! Love all your videos, Isaac, and I'm always excited to see what you come up with! Thanks for keeping our days magical!
Tiger Lily hey I'm reading a book about you😊
Tiger Lily I agree. There are princesses without crowns
Exactlllly
Well, both her and the original are great in their own ways. Why?
*Inserts reason why*
Well, I think the original princesses are also great role models. They’re all equally great
I think that she didn't end up marrying Quasimodo because in the beginning when it says, "Who is the monster and who is the man"; he didn't hate Phoebis for being her true love.
@@emmad.176 It wasn't necessary, he shouldn't have been willing to do anything for a woman that broke his heart.
All princesses are good role models.

He was engaged to a woman named fleur de Liz ... that’s the flower that represents France... maybe he was engaged to his country, cause he was some sort of a knight? Part of the army ... 🤨🤨🤨
jocelyn palomo ooh nice theory
Fleur de Lis. It was a symbol of royalty.
It’s Fleur-de-Lys
jocelyn palomo // actually Phoebus isn’t that much of a gentleman in the actual story of Victor Hugo. He wanted to marry Fleur de Lys solely because she was rich (she was 14 too btw) and only lusted after Esmerelda
Personal mind you, Fleur-de-Lys was his cousin (I think)
Theory: Maybe Esmeralda was a teenager when she lost her parents and moved to Paris to live with Clopin. If she were like 15-17 when she lost them then maybe if she wasn't fully an adult she would be on the cusp of adulthood.
raikougal oh true
I remember in one movie version (The silent movie starring Lon Chaney) it was mentioned that Esmerelda was stolen by the gypsies when she was a baby.
Esmerelda is a very strong woman. When she sings her song it touches my heart. She cares greatly about good people.
Yes I do think that Esmeralda should be a Disney Princess. She's brave, outspoken, loyal and is willing to protect her loved ones from Frollo.
Great point, but with all that said, she might actually be Quasi’s non-distant cousin!
Umm Esmeralda (at least the one in the movie) isn't white
ella enchanted Yea she isnt they never said she was in this theory
ella enchanted you are saying that two persons of diferents color of skin can’t be brothers or family?

You forget one Thing. Pheobus, *does* request permission to stop the crowd's treatment of Quasimodo at the festival og fools

Ah, now I understand. Thanks Isaac! 😊
Scar had emerald green eyes!!! Kovu had a darkesh emerald eyes!!!
Kovu is kind of like disturbingly attractive male lion Esmeralda.

Esmeralda is one of my favorite Disney heroines. Her compassion, bravery, and defiance make her an amazing character.

I like both versions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Disney should do a live action remake to this, only as dark as the original novel
Isaiah Adams watch Hunchback of Notre Dame the Musical. You can find the whole thing on RUclips. It's amazing and retains the intense dark themes of the novel.
And with NO DAMN GARGOYLES

Hmm I'm thinking if Tim Burton would plan on making The Hunchback of Notre Dame live action.. Could be epic?
I don't, it just makes me angry and frustrated. i want Quasimodo to be with her no matter what, i don't care how he views her.
Dang, she is so underrated. I had no idea she had such a powerful backstory.
Someone may have pointed this out already, but it's driving me insane so I'm gonna say it.
it's not "clop-in". It's pronounced "klo-pahn."
You can see it in The Bells of Notre-Dame. He pronounces his own name, "klo-pahn."
Esmeralda will forever be one of my favorite animated heroines because of her independence, beauty, smarts, and compassion! 😄
She would have been one my favorites too if she ended up with quasimodo instead of mr perfection knight.
I'm so glad they didn't show that in Disney's movie.
I like your point.
When I watched the movie recently, my thought is that Esmeralda is the true hero of the movie
No she shouldn’t be a princess. She should be a Queen.
I do think that Esmeralda should be a Disney princess.
YES! FINALLY!
I waited so long for this!
Thank you, you're awesome!

Remembering you've loved Disney princesses your whole life only to realize you are most like Esmeralda ❤
