It would have made more sense if he had played his character as an alatrist, somebody who believes in divine powers but chooses not to worship them.
Or a misotheist, somebody who takes it a step further by actively hating a god or gods that they still believe in.
There are things to be done with such a character and exploring their outlook and reasons for feeling that way.
Maybe they are adventuring to spite the gods and prove mortals can handle everything better on their own.
Maybe they are just doing their own thing and don't care what the gods are doing.

In pathfinder, the souls of athiests are fed to the god of the endtimes to keep him from crushing the Boneyard, where souls go to be judged.
in Forgotten realms, those who deny the painfully obvious existence of the 70-80 gods in that game are cast into what's basically the source wall, and don't get an afterlife.
In D&D and pathfinder you can even become a god. The gods talk to their followers. its like denying the existance of the sun while living in the desert.

    • @WhyYouMadBoi

This is why I always have my characters have a minor attraction to deities because if they are going to die at least get an afterlife. And if the character is evil make them so evil that they become soul slugs and become pretty strong devils. Will they forget their past? Yeah but at least they're somewhat living instead of doing nothing!

Well, atheism in the Forgotten Realms setting I've heard gets your soul fed to some evil abomination (forgot the name) that will destroy everything once they feed on enough souls, so this presents an interesting dilemma that could be explored for an atheistic character if they find out.

I think the dumbest part about the atheist story is that there are _so many_ interesting ways to make a character who functions similarly enough to an atheist.
"Gods exist, I just don't _like_ any of them."
"I believe in gods the same way you might believe in a table."
"I don't trust anyone with a lot of power, least of all those with an unlimited amount of it."
"Gods are inherently immoral for demanding worship and servitude in order to get access to the power to feed people in a world where people die of starvation."
"We are mice running in a labyrinth, watched over by things that can kill us on a whim. I don't think my life is made better by focusing on that."
"If I need to prove my worth to gain respect from the gods, they need to do the same to me."
"A person worshipping a god is no different from a kobold worshipping a dragon, we just think they are because we can kill the dragon."
"I don't mind people's individual faiths if their lives have been changed by gods, but I don't approve of the vanity of building organised religion around it."
"I know that something powerful exists, I know that this being called [god name here] exists, but they're just warlock patrons but with more power; I see no more reason to worship them more than I worship an archfey."
"How can you know a god won't change like people do?"
"Illusions and trickery are commonplace, so how can you ever truly know your prayers are answered by who you think they're being answered by?"
"I respect the acts of gods about as much as I respect the weather outside, and in both cases, I prefer to guard myself against the effects in case they change for the worse."
Whether these statements are factual or not, or even necessarily smart or not, they're _plausible_ beliefs to have developed by a person with a bitter attitude towards the divine, and so much more interesting than "la la, nothing's real."

That’s what really bugs me about “Mark”, I’ve seen what is effectively an atheist in these settings done well before, but instead of being creative and making a reason for his character’s views that can be expanded on in the story, he threw a temper tantrum about his real life militant atheism not being reflected in a setting where gods are an undeniable fact.

Chaotic neutral. Would be a hired assassin, that only kills people simply because they were hired to do it.

The definition of Chaotic neutral is someone who lives by their own heart regardless of other's morals or rules, taking their own freedom first, good and evil second. Thats why murderhobos dont need to take chaotic evil and still do whatever, which is a problem in itself
Also it never stated in the first 50 seconds that they considered killing people a game, what you are changing the wording for is the willingness to play games with people that could end up with either party dead, this can include russian roulette, who can throw a knife closest to the other's head without drawing blood and many more dangerous/possibly death enducing game.
And OP is wrong actually when they say "definition of evil doesnt change on character to character bases". You can make a traditional holier than thou "i'll smite thee scum!" Chaotic good character while still committing crime by having it in your backstory that you were told bad is good and good is bad from the day you were born.

Most hired assassins would be lawful evil or lawful neutral because they work for whoever hired them and usually have a professional code of honor when eliminating their target. Lawful evil might work for a criminal organization while a lawful neutral assassin would act as a spymaster or other sanctioned spy. Also, technically speaking, it is entirely possible to create a character who STARTS as an atheist if they have lived in isolation/an isolated community where clerics, paladins, and other divinely empower individuals don't live. They would never have encountered anyone who had powers granted by divine authority, so they could easily just not believe in gods. it's an unbiased decision of the players and/or the dm based on their motivations, methods and deeds
like if you save a kingdom for purely monetary gains and some fame and influence, you're probably not good
if you save a kingdom by overthrowing the evil king and while keeping civilian casualties at a minimum, you might be good
if you destroy the capital with magic, terrorism, plagues or similar means to revenge your lost ones and kill the evil king, you might have "saved" the kingdom by ending the tyranny of an evil king, but you're probably evil

I'm an atheist too, but I'm chill as long as people don't _force their views on other people._ (Theological discussions with my partner are legit beautiful.) Y'know, _like he was doing._
He insisted that being an atheist made him better than all those 'fanatical' religious people...and then found secular causes for his fanaticism like Sony, shit-talked his 'friends' for playing other game consoles, and hated all the same people the church tells people to hate for all the same bogus reasons.
Eventually he called _me_ an extremist because I...got mad, when he _laughed_ about LGBT people getting hate-crimed into an early grave...and told him that _I am one._ So are most of my loved ones.
