I was hoping you tore them apart and showed us the generic 16mm capsule those most likely use. You know these things that cost a few cents when bought on bulk.
I bought a fake e906 from aliexpress and it is hilariously cheap and certainly not genuine. Sounds reasonably okay though, and good enough to toss in the gig bag in the event that I show up and the sound guy somehow doesn't have a stand to mic my amp. I also have some Neewer interchangable capsule mics that come with hyper and omni capsules as well as cardioid, and they're great! They were like 100$. Are you sure that cable was working right? Sounds to me like those microphones were missing a leg of the xlr signal.
My best guess is: They know these are a rip off. Or a scam even. So they're gonna be like "does it 'work'?". And when making it from 'barely working' to 'just working' costs 5c more they won't do it.
Dont buy fake mics, you can get for example a matched pair of Behringer C2 small diaphragm mics with case and stereo bar which are surprisingly good for the money, i have them, myself and they can be had for about 40£ for the pair which is about the same price a piece as one of those crappy buzzy mics. There are also many decent store branded cheap mics like for example Thomanns t.bone mics, i also have some of them.

I'll pull one apart and check when I get a chance. P

Oddly you may be onto something. I tried an old Tascam preamp and while noise was still present the hum wasnt? Very strange! Cheers
Very true. I purchased one due to the price but quickly realised it had ony one use... landfill.
What I do not understand is why they don't simply fix the issue before selling them? Preamps are not that hard to do properly!

Totally agree but some people always want them, like guitars
