      Please ask him if he's heard from MLB whether the umpires can institute a review on their own, or if MLB head office has said anything about allowing this officially or that umps should stick to the 15 seconds no matter what. After all, MLB survived with blown calls for years.

      Boone was on the other side of almost the exact same situation in Anaheim a few years ago where with 2nd and 3rd 1 out, the call was 9-6 fly out DP with Stanton out at 2nd on appeal but Didi scored from 3rd. Lin covered this at CloseCallSports. She pointed out correctly that, normally, the umpire meeting kind of resets the clock for challenges so they technically handled this correctly. What she didn't talk about, and is screwy to me too, is that fact that they didn't get together until they had already started talking to Boone and also saw the replay on the board. I think if they talk to Francona first or just get together immediately, this doesn't go down this way.

    • @davruck1
      @davruck1 Год назад +16

      Well according to Jomboy the umpires counted the run. But after the conference the run was taken off. So that means the ruling was never official until the conference. At that point Francona could challenge.

    • @jacobs7860
      @jacobs7860 Год назад +7

      Yes, I keep coming back to the fact that if this whole play happened at Yankee Stadium instead of in Cleveland, there would’ve been no challenge. That obviously is why Boone was upset and felt like it wasn’t fair

    • @jeraldwilson8185
      @jeraldwilson8185 Год назад +50

      Bullshit. Lindsay's commentary at CCS doens't show Francona saying "I never challenged it.". They got together for thier "conference" way after 15 seconds, and ONLY AFTER the jumbotron showed the replay. They got the call right, but they broke their own rules in doing so.

    You know all these vids make me realize how crazy baseball must have been before cameras were all over the field.
    From a distance that first catch definitely could have looked like a full out, and you’d kinda just have to take the guy’s word for it wether he actually caught it or it hit the ground first. And without any form of replays there were probably so many wrong calls given all the time.

      There was a game in-I want to say it was the 1979 World Series (Pirates/Orioles)-and there was a play sort of like that. The OF made a shoetop catch, and even though obviously the game didn't have replay review, the telecast showed the play a bunch of times in slow motion, running it forwards and backwards, and it showed the ball changing direction into the heart of the mitt. It clearly bounced. But was it bouncing off the webbing of the mitt, or was it bouncing off the grass? No one could say for sure because the ball was like three pixels. I think they called it an out at the time, but I wouldn't be surprised if even the OF didn't know for sure. (I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but it was damned close.)

      A missed call because human senses are fallible is one thing. This was beyond that. This was the umps getting the rule wrong by going over after the 15 seconds and allowing the challenge, compounded by the people in the review center reviewing it instead of saying, "Wait a second, you can't do that". The league needs to issue a ruling on this. If you want to change it so the last play of an inning can be reviewed, or all plays are reviewed or whatever, that's fine, but it has to be consistent. This is like someone sitting over someone's shoulder in a scrabble game. The player puts down their letters, and the game judge whispers to them 'hey, you know, if you put that S on the end you can get a triple word score'.

    CloseCallSports has a different take on it. The umpires had an approximate two minute conference to determine whether to overturn the catch call. The fifteen second challenge starts after the managers are informed of the outcome of the conference. Cleveland challenged immediately after being informed of the umpires decision not to change the catch call.

    So here's a couple interesting points:
    1) Tito puts up the hold sign before the replay comes out, but he later said he wasn't going to challenge Hicks' catch (which doesn't really match his actions). I think he DID decide to go through with his challenge *because of the replay*, because had he seen that Hicks dropped the ball, he'd have no reason to worry about his runners leaving the bag early, getting forced out, etc. (which is only an issue if he thought Hicks had actually made the catch).
    2) The umpires had a huddle BEFORE they addressed Tito's challenge, and it doesn't look like they asked what he was challenging beforehand. They then proceeded to UPHOLD their original call despite seeing the replay (not sure why Jomboy didn't include that part), so I think they're honestly being pretty above board. After the huddle, it makes sense for them to go back to Tito's unaddressed challenge. Given that they didn't check what he was questioning, and Tito challenging anything besides the catch wouldn't be to his team's advantage, they didn't really knowingly screw anyone over.
    3) I fully understand Boone being upset since Tito adjusted what he was challenging based on the replay, but honestly he's assuming a lot. Unless he didn't see Tito put up the hold sign, he should have known that Tito was challenging SOMETHING, and presumably it would be Hicks' catch because again, challenging anything else would not be to his advantage. So for all he knows, Tito saw Hicks drop the ball and wanted to investigate. Since the umpires didn't address the challenge before their huddle, it makes it look like Tito got extra time to consider, but I do think Boone was getting upset without having all the facts. Moot point because he was right in the end, haha, but worth noting.

    • @daneg
      @daneg Год назад +4

      Francona said he never intended to challenge the catch. Nor did he consider challenging it. He "challenged" it only after the ump came over and asked him if he wanted to. It wasn't a tiered priority on Francona's part. He literally stated that he had no intention of challenging the catch. As for the rest, I don't know. The ump huddle resetting the clock and all of that is fine. I'm not going to pretend to know the finer details of MLB rules. But Francona was clear in the presser after the game that he had no intention of challenging the catch. so that much is clear. the murky issue is whether the umps followed the rules in allowing the 2nd challenge or going over and asking if he wanted to challenge (that 2nd time). again, I don't pretend to know the right and wrong of it. just that Francona was clearly not going to challenge the catch.

    • @Arwenisawesome
      @Arwenisawesome Год назад

      Haha same, I’m def not a rules expert. I fully agree with you, Francona wasn’t challenging the catch (which is why I think he changed his tune when the umps came to address his hold sign). My husband theorized that he had put up the hold sign so his replay team could review the entire play since he was concerned that his guy was out. Had Rizzo actually made the catch, maybe he would’ve dropped the challenge (if you can do that) once he realized he’d be ratting out his baseman, lol. But I think since he was given the opportunity to change what he was challenging, he ran with it. So shame on him at the very least.
