Tommy Ott Doug plays some beautiful acoustic guitar though. I don’t think it would need to be plugged in. But idles made it work so maybe. I’ll never underestimate Doug
I was in a crappy band in high school called Mellow Stigma. My brother, Dano, and his friend Nick Garcia snuck us into the Neurolux to play a show for the first time in front of a live crowd. It was 1995 and I think we interrupted the Electric Peaches set. I was so scared....but I can still remember Doug doing the sound for us and telling me to turn up my guitar. I'm a single dad and an accountant now (suicidal??)...but Doug still inspires me to plug in and make some noise from time to time. That is one of my best memories. It is pretty cool to live in the same town as your musical hero. Thank you Doug. I appreciate all of the hard work you've put into making music that means a lot to me. John Madden, Boise
I got to meet and talk to Doug after a show a couple months back and before we parted he shook my hand, and like Excalibur from the stone, his touch transferred a small portion of his power and I now have the ability to play any Built to Spill song I wish... Well I still can't play like him but that's what it feels like to meet Doug Martsch.
+JcGrubbsFilms I met Jim Roth after a show in Gainesville, Fl. I was intoxicated after the show, went to the food truck, stood in line for a minute with a buddy(who is not so much a BTS fan), then as the person in front of me turned around, I noticed who it was. I said, " whoaaa, you're you! Jim Roth! One of the three reasons I began playing guitar(100% accurate). He had two arms full of nachos. He balanced them on one arm TO GIVE ME A HANDSHAKE AND FORMALLY INTRODUCE HIMSELF. He asked me my fucking name. There's not a band like this with such down to earth members on this fucking planet.
I met him years ago after a show in Philly. He was loading his own equipment in an alley behind the venue and I couldn't help but say hi. He was super nice and open to meeting a random fan. I asked for an autograph and only had my car registration, so he signed that. He signed his name "Dug".
I love it when a band that has a lot of guitars......sounds like A LOT OF GUITARS. Not just a bunch of clowns standing there strumming the same fucking chord. Built To Spill has such a huge and spectacular multi layered guitar sound. great band!
craigdamage Dude... comment of the century!! never thought I’d see someone comment PRECISELY was I was thinking. It’s always driven me crazy when a band has 2+ guitarists live, and they’re are basically just playing the same power chords, with one of them switching to playing a solo during the solo, and then right back to playing the same thing as each other. I guess I understand if what you want is a muddied-up mess, but otherwise it’s so lazy and unoriginal. If you have multiple guitarists, take advantage of it! One great example of a band that perfectly made use of multiple guitarists was Fugazi. There wasn’t a rhythm guitarist and a lead guitarist. It was more that one of them played a crunchier style on an SG, and the other guy played a more “sparkly” Rickenbacker. It was the perfect two-guitar attack, imo. Another obvious example was Sonic Youth. They made better use of the guitar in general than anyone ever.
It's always interesting to hear Doug talk a bit. At shows he usually just says "thank you" "give it up for (insert opening act here" and "here's another song" he seems more comfortable just playing music but I'm always fascinated by what he has to say.
I have sat in on a private built to spill jam session It was me and two other guys sitting in the El Korah in Boise at Treefort and they were just jamming and nobody else was there. Such an amazing band.
I remember going to one of their concerts here in Dublin and actually I didn't even know Doug face but just loved their music. And during the opening act, in an almost empty theatre there is this guy dancing near me... On the last song of the support band, he and the others get from the floor to the stage, they all take the instruments and play a last song with the support band. At that stage I had a huge smile on my face! Great stuff and really a cool humble guy, that's how Doug came across. A great memory
I've listened to studio versions of these songs easily 100 times. Hearing the different mix and variations in the performances is like looking at a famous statue from a different angle. You notice parts you've never seen before and it's almost like hearing them for the first time again.
Hot damn that intro and first song! I never thought of this band as a band i needed to see live but damn. doug martsch is a ripper. This literally melted my face off. How is that lady even alive after being so close to that?
Doug is the best! seen these guys 10 times now from Chicago to California and they never disappoint! Doug is like the nicest, sincere man ever, too. He always takes time to shake hands, talk and sign stuff. Hell, when we saw them in San Francisco we actually stood on the sidewalk and talked and his bass player grabbed me a beer off their tour bus. Now that's classy!
Love Built to Spill and KEXP. I think this performance sounds better than the album! The album was too slick and clean, but the songs still shine through.
Tom's Green Mind This video actually prompted me to listen to the new album again and something clicked into place and I like it a lot more than I did in the first place. Weird how sometimes seeing a live performance can change your perception of an album.
scaredypicker I’ll be seeing BTS for the 4th and 5th time on Guy Fawkes night and the night before Guy Fawkes in San Francisco, CA. I’m also from the UK.
KEXP.OMG. A friend of mine got me into Built to Spill. Never heard of them, before his introduction. I'm really glad he did. I cannot imagine my playlist without some BTS.
I recently got into Built To Spill. They influenced a lot of the bands I have listened to for a long time, but it took me a while to fully understand them. I really like their new album. It's crazy how they still make good music after all these years
Saw them live at Bluesfest in Ottawa, Canada in 2007. I was volunteering at the backstage catering. Served Doug & the gang but was too shy to say hi and that I'm a big fan. Regrets!
My mother was buried today at 10:30am...I was unable to be there....I'm 9000 miles away and when I get back, all I will have is a stone with her name written on it...I can't breathe...
A friend introduced me to them and instantly fell in love with there music. So at a later date saw them play in Cambridge Mass. AWESOME SHOW !! Wish you the best
Coolest frontman ever is a short list Doug and Geoff from Thursday. Only guys I've met who will go out of their way for fans, hang around even though you know they need to roll out. Also have seen shows from both where they were so God damn contagiously happy to be doing what they were doing it made the experience, and the music was fucking transcendent so thats saying something.
You know what, also wanna add both will have set lists totally and completely for their fans. Even with a new album out they'll play what they know people came for. Ffs Geoff once asked the audience for permission to play a great song off their latest album. As a musician idk if I'd be that nice and they are way wayyy further along and above my ass haha
Never heard these till today but I live in southern england and am quite old. They are great . Is drummer wearing a 1980s Everton FC soccer shirt ? This station had The Chameleons whom most folks south of Manchester and beyond 1989 have never heard of - so their ears seem to know just what needs listening to 🏴😇🍄❤️
I will go anytime I can to hear them. I first saw them in NY shortly after the attacks and they covered Lennon ,Imagine(was a fan as soon as I heard Doug's skills) ...but love all THEIR stuff, it was just a moment I'll never forget
Welp, I was today years old when I randomly clicked on this and heard BTS for the first time.Ever. Seriously, someone should have told me about this band.

I want these guys to do a tiny desk concert
It would be so good...ugh
totally would love to see that. although we prob wouldn't get the same level of vicious guitar action :\
now that u mention it kind of bizarre it hasnt happened yet
Tommy Ott Doug plays some beautiful acoustic guitar though. I don’t think it would need to be plugged in. But idles made it work so maybe. I’ll never underestimate Doug

Awesome story! Never lose the noise!
John Madden and
Nick Garcia was my teacher in High School! Cheers from another Boise native!
Ya big sweethearts
hope youre still jammin'..peace and love
Built To Spill literally saved my life.
I concur.
Built to Spill is pure imagination.
Awesome. Was it not at all figurative, though?
I got to meet and talk to Doug after a show a couple months back and before we parted he shook my hand, and like Excalibur from the stone, his touch transferred a small portion of his power and I now have the ability to play any Built to Spill song I wish... +JcGrubbsFilms Did the power of his beard bestow itself upon your facial follicles as well
+JcGrubbsFilms , I met him at a show this year and he too shook my hand. I swear there was an electric charge. Doug is amazing!

Rob Matthews If you hear no substance in the music in this video, I can’t fathom what your definition of “substance” is...
craigdamage ahh just what I was thinking!
Doug is recorded amongst the 100 best guitarists of all time.
He’s in my personal top 5 with Hendrix, Prince, Jack White and Johnny Marr.
I love his style so much, and he isn't really using any super secret sauce. Hugely underrated guitarist
He’s my guitar hero
Their guitar tone is otherworldly. Dear god....
it's because Jim is a master modder and pedal builder
...b-brother?
Oh god, those guitars are melting my thoughts
Ditto brother...
Built to Spill has been my favorite band since the early 90s. Doug is a gentle genius!
Same
I love Cheryl so much. She always seems genuinely stoked to be seeing every single artist
Is there a band that ISN'T Cheryl Waters favorite band of all time?
+John Kaitlyn -- Cheryl does get most of the best bands tho! Plus she's so kind. She can say no wrong.
+Greg Kodgis I wish I had a job like hers! What a great career.
Cheryl Waters hung the moon. She should be Trump's running mate.
Station identification is standard procedure in radio
John Kaitlyn band of horses
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Best band ever man.
This is an amazing portrayal of the band. Cheryl Waters handles this wonderfully and this is exactly why I give to KEXP. So good.
It's always interesting to hear Doug talk a bit. At shows he usually just says "thank you" "give it up for (insert opening act here" and "here's another song" he seems more comfortable just playing music but I'm always fascinated by what he has to say.
Doug looks more and more like a wizard every time I see him
+WeirdElf That's a good way to look at it.
+WeirdElf or more like a miniature schnauzer
He IS a wizard.
guitar wizard.
@@DenemChikn Shout out to Doug. Shout out to mini schnauzers.
Wow holy hell the three-guitar version of this band is the best ever.
I have sat in on a private built to spill jam session It was me and two other guys sitting in the El Korah in Boise at Treefort and they were just jamming and nobody else was there. Such an amazing band.
lucky
Robert Pirsig´s Quality was there too big time, I guess. ;-) But shush, don´t tell anyone...
I remember going to one of their concerts here in Dublin and actually I didn't even know Doug face but just loved their music. Man, "so" is such a marvelous song.
0:30 so
6:20 never be the same
14:55 living zoo
19:50 stab
Stab is one of my favourite songs ever!
muggyboi as doug kept saying...."sure thing"
I've listened to studio versions of these songs easily 100 times. Hearing the different mix and variations in the performances is like looking at a famous statue from a different angle. You notice parts you've never seen before and it's almost like hearing them for the first time again.
The transition & the following guitar solo in Living Zoo at 18:21 is heaven sent. Bloody goosebumps! OMG!
Hot damn that intro and first song! I never thought of this band as a band i needed to see live but damn. doug martsch is a ripper. This literally melted my face off. How is that lady even alive after being so close to that?
oh gosh - I never miss them live and have traveled to see them, even with current pared-down incarnation, they are just so amazing! Do It !!!!
My face ripping off was more figurative. But definitely some rockers on here.
Been seeing this band live for 17 years and they get better and better every time.
Girl in my class stared at me very weirdly from the sounds coming from my headphones. Never been prouder.
First song he just rocked out on another planet then comes back to say all quiet and humble -" I broke a string" lol
fuck yeah favorite singer playing a squire strat. its gonna be a good day
Doug is the best! seen these guys 10 times now from Chicago to California and they never disappoint! Doug is like the nicest, sincere man ever, too. Built to spill is one of the most underrated bands. Thank you Doug and the boys.
Tom's Green Mind I still can't get into the newer album as a whole, unfortunately. So is probably my favorite track.
I was thinking the same thing. 'So' is better in this studio performance than on the album. Good ear
I totally agree. I prefer to listen to this Live version instead of the studio album.
I've watched a lot of live on Kexp concerts. Until now this is my favorite
Cheryl Waters is _GORGEOUS_ !!!!!
You know it's a great band when they broke two string for just four songs.
Doug's cover of neil youngs cortez the killer is classic and worth searching for.
Amazing, thanks for the recommendation.
@@Ovadiazigi The version I think Rob is recommending is actually BTS, from their "Live" album.
You don't have to search very hard since it's on the live album
Not a fan
"Every Thousand years, this metal sphere ten times the size of Jupiter....." etc. (best concept of eternity ever)
That's how Randy described it anyways 😎
One of my favourite bands. Never seen them, but I really want to. Tour the UK again please!!!!! D:
scaredypicker I’ll be seeing BTS for the 4th and 5th time on Guy Fawkes night and the night before Guy Fawkes in San Francisco, CA. I’m also from the UK.
dude. that was way cooler than I was expecting
Every time I listen to this, it just gets better and better. Can't get enough of them.

New album is so goood. They're awesome dudes.

And looks like their upcoming new one is gonna be another masterpiece, the lead single is amazing
one of the best kexp sessions. long live guitar
Love you guys! Can't wait to see you in New Orleans in July. I will be the one wearing an Idaho shirt.
One of my favorite bands to see live. Always great.
Love how the tempo bumps up in the intro for Living Zoo
Love how Doug has been playing that same guitar since at least the late 90’s
I love that too, he’s such an anti-gear-snob, so refreshing
Just saw them Sunday night in Phx...amazeballs!
Saw them live at Bluesfest in Ottawa, Canada in 2007. I was volunteering at the backstage catering. Served Doug & the gang but was too shy to say hi and that I'm a big fan. Regrets!
love this band!!!
Rex
your icon is more artistic than this band
***** i guess this music is not for the simple mind.
christopher-john facer I agree

"Con Artists of Evolution"...holy hell this dude's uploads are crazy pants
I can’t stop watching/ listening to them playing “Living Zoo”! It’s so good. Unfuckingreal!

Ilan Begon thank you very much. Cheers.
Built to Spill is a f%cking fantastic band and Doug is a guitar playing guru!
One of the best bands of all time.
Love those layered guitars.
went to cencert twice. will go again. amazing band.
A friend introduced me to them and instantly fell in love with there music. So at a later date saw them play in Cambridge Mass. AWESOME SHOW !! Wish you the best
Doug is the best! He played Car acoustic out front of the Fox in Boulder for all the people that didn’t get a ticket.
You can tell how reserved they've become since back in the day... still can't create a bad album tho!
Nice to hear Doug speak. He doesn't say much on stage.
Doug is always the one who will wait after the show and talk and sign with fans. He is awesome

I remember discovering this band many years ago from the Etnies Forward BMX video..."Stab" was played in Rueben Alcantara's section...so awesome
Fantastic audio mix and fantastic performance. Wonderful job guys.
So is a badass song
I will go anytime I can to hear them. I first saw them in NY shortly after the attacks and they covered Lennon ,Imagine(was a fan as soon as I heard Doug's skills) ...but love all THEIR stuff, it was just a moment I'll never forget
17:22 Ha ha! Middle finger!
Love Doug's reaction.
haha, missed that, that middle finger barre chord is the best and nothing works better in certain situations ;)
Get these guys back for the new record in Seattle
The best thing to ever come out of Idaho!
I saw them in 99 on a Festival playing early afternoon in a small tent stage, cant put in words how amazing they were. Lifted me to cloud 12 that day
Wow so awesome hearing the new songs... Then "Stab" started, I melted so awesome. Bravo fellas!!
Thank you Cheryl.
I saw BTS in 2018 and again 3 weeks ago. And now I am impatiently waiting for another show. ❤
Such an awesome set, sound, album and era! Love this 5 piece!!
holy shit, easy to forget how long these guys have been around. such great music
Dude! Jason Albertini from Helvetia on bass!
He also played drums in Duster!
So looking forward to see them in a week! I hope they will have the same sound as here..perfect!
...last time I've seen them, Doug Broke a string as well.. 5 minutes interruption. "Sorry guys, I do only have this one guitar".
Nice sound mixing and improvising!!! WOW!
ty kexp for all the amazing bands you have showcased for us!
Absolutely love it! Has a real early early REM feel with a heavier guitar. Amazing
Welp, I was today years old when I randomly clicked on this and heard BTS for the first time.Ever. Seriously, someone should have told me about this band.
I really like the sunburst sg
This band is so so good.
Steve the drummer is a classically trained pianist. That's the level of quality in this underrated band.
July 24th.My nephew Jasper just turned me on to these guys.He said he and his brothers used to play pickup basketball with Doug in Boise...Washington State Fair in September.
Awesome band, most memorable show for me was at The Sotano around 2001/2002. My buddy Bug had a nice lil improv solo at the end of the show when Dug handed him his axe. And yes they played Mr. Crowley.
