My daddy tried to bring Mama out of her coma with this song... she'd fallen into a coma after surgery for aneurysms... this was THEIR SONG when it first came out. He'd sit there beside her on her hospital bed, holding her hand while he played this cassette over & over... so every time I hear it that’s what I see: Daddy praying at Mama's bedside & holding her hands while this played... Daddy finally joined her in Heaven, but it took 20 more years. Through those last 20 years, I'd catch him still playing it, time to time, when he thought no one was around..
He wa sick during this performance and never missed a note. True talent. His mom was out on the audience and the orchestra was people he had never sang with before. Absolutely amazing!!! 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ tears no matter what cause of such beauty and simplicity😢
He died in Kalamazoo in a hotel before he and Bill were to go onstage, just an hour from my house!!i cried, I grew up with that music and I was a music teacher.
This is regarded as one of the greatest live vocal performances of all time (See also Elvis, If I Can Dream, 1968 Comeback Special). Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley as the Righteous Brothers are a legendary duo. Both epic vocalists but Hatfield's performance of this is just ❤🔥May he RIP🕯
Seems though... less than 10% of US TVs were color yet in 65. NBC started most prime-time to color shows for the 65/66 season. So this 1965 Andy Williams TV Show was recorded and broadcast in color. All 3 networks then.... went to most also color for the 66/67 season. I know as a boy we did not have a color TV until a wealthier relative gave us their first one and that one had tubes and not what was called solid state yet. I remember color between shows to commercials would have radically different color.... you adjusted to decent fleshtones for one show... a commercial came on and had green faces and next pink faces... same for changing stations. That old RCA color had my father complain and want good ole B&W back.... and it kept the TV repair man busy coming to the home to change weakened tubes LOL.
You had to have talent to sing back then ... no auto tune, no re-takes, no gimmick, just pure God given talent . That's not falsetto .. Bobby is a rare counter tenor with an amazing range .. also know to us oldies as blue eyed soul. Check out You've Lost That Loving Feeling (most played song of the 20th century.... also Bobby singing Summertime
one of the greatest live performances ever. This was back in the days when they would promote songs/albums on the late night show circuits similar to how they would promote movies on the same circuit today. This song was written by a person who was in jail, singing about would his woman still appreciate/love him after he was released after being in jail for so long.
Originally from the film Unchained, in 1955. Lots of artists have recorded it. But Bobby's versions are the definitive ones. It was the black Marines out of El Toro that named them, true story,
Thank you for playing the clip with Andy Williams introducing them. They are so funny, and Bill Medley delivers his lines with such a straight face and dry demeanor! Makes it even funnier! 😂😂
This song was from the movie Ghost! But Bobby Hatfield was 25 when he sang this song live with a terrible cold. His parents were in the audience and he was really nervous. He nailed this song and no one has ever come close to sounding like him. Rest in peace Bobby. You are missed.
Loads of singers have sung this song but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the movie 'Ghost' but this live version is stupendous. He had a cold, his mother was watching him sing live for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. Watch when he gets to the high notes at the end. He does not contort his face like other singers do when hitting a high note. He bites his lip and smiles as if to say I nailed it.
Bobby sang effortlessly and it speaks to his skill and control. I think Krizz is mistaken here I don't think Bobby sang this in falsetto, but it seems it. My memory also says Bobby _gained an octave_ when he got older. A rare talent for sure, RIP Bobby.
It was written for the 1955 prison movie Unchained. This was on the Andy Williams show and Bobby's mom was in the audience. You need to check out their cover of You'll Never Walk Alone on the Ed Sulluvan Show.
Bobby is a counter tenor and his high notes come out naturally not forced out like a falsetto. If you want to see more power from Bobby’s voice listen to “Summertime”. That will blow you away
Kris, you know this from the movie GHOST......the pottery scene and the final scene. This song was originally in an old 1955 little known prison movie called Unchained. Bobby Hatfield is the 4th person to cover this song and he did it his way and it became a hit in 1965. This song got a second life from the Ghost movie and hit the charts for a second time. Unchanged Melody is the most covered song ever with well over 650 covers. Bobby's original recording is what you hear in Ghost. Bobby is a counter tenor with a 4 octave range. He can hit those high notes....no falsetto.....those bare pure notes. Bobby passed away in 2002. His partner, Bill Medley is still performing. In fact Bill also has a song from A famous movie. He sings, I Had The Time If My Life in the final huge dance scene from the movie, Dirty Dancing. Check out The righteous brothers together singing: "You've Let That Loving Feeling". " Soul and Inspiration" "Rock and Roll Heaven" ( videos on all) Bobby was 24 here, was very nervous, had a cold and his mom was in the audience seeing him perform live on tv for the first time. The Andy Williams show was a very popular TV show with a huge viewer audience. Check out Andy Williams, he has an amazing voice: "Love Is A Many Splendor Thing". " Moon River". Andy sang mostly movie ballads. Maybe best know for "Its The Most Wonderful Time If The Year". A Christmas song that's a staple throughout the holiday season and has also been used in commercials. The Righteous Brothers started out in 2 different groups but came together to create a unique sound. They were together for a few yesrs, then split for solo careers. After a few years they got back together and toured all around until Bobby's death in 2002. He died in his hotel room just hours before they were to perform. Check out Bobby's rendition of " Summertime" ( video). And Bill singing "I Just Wasn't To Make Love to You"
Another great live performance on the Ed Sullivan show which really highlights both their vocals and their incredible HARMONIES is YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE! ❤❤ Love your reactions from an 80 yr old who grew up listening to this great music. This song was written by Alex North (music) and Zy Haret ( lyrics) for the 1955 movie "Unchained." Thus the name. The movie was the story of a man in prison contempletating escape. The song went relatively unnoticed until recorded by the Righteous Brothers in 1965. This clip is from the Andy Williams Show. Andy was one of the famous crooners from the 50s to 70s era. He recorded 43 albums, 15 of which went gold and 3 which went platinum. Andy is best known for his recording of Moon River.
The movie was "Ghost". Also, men at that time used a product called Brylcreem to hold their hair in place. "Brylcreem: A little dab will do ya". There was also Aquanet hairspray.
As a duet they had a series of hits in the early and mid-sixties that are just wonderful time capsules now. 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling',Soul And Inspiration', or 'Just Once In My Life'. Bill Medley (tall skinny guy) had a duet that has featured in Dirty Dancing, called 'Time Of My Life'.
Bill was joking about not thinking it was going to be a hit. They often flipped coins or just had songs that fit their individual ranges best (like Bill singing "I Just Wanna Make Love to You") so went that way. They both did solos often along with the duets. In fact, Bill played the piano while Bobby sang on the original recording of "Unchained Melody".
This was planned to be a B-side or a filler for an album so Phil Spector, the producer, left early thinking it a waste of time. So Bill not only played piano on it but effectively filled in as the producer. I've heard rumors that Phil Spector tried to cover that up.
@@richdiddens4059Bill produced all their albums so no, Phil was nowhere around when this was recorded. Bill played piano and sang backup on that original version. Phil was only interested in producing hit singles...when this one became a hit he put his name on it as producer
They were on the Andy Williams variety tv show. Andy Williams was a crooner type singer. He did a ton of Christmas song albums. This song was a top hit in two different decades. The song You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling was the #1 requested song on the radio in the 20th century. Bill Medley continued to perform into his 80s. He used to sing this as a tribute to his deceased partner. To hear Bill Medley without although with Jennifer Warnes, listen to Time of my Life from Dirty Dancing. This was from the Andy Williams Show. It was one of many variety shows of that day. And, yes, they did have color TV back then, but lots of homes didn't have them yet because they were crazy expensive. Also, many TV shows were still done in black and white then.
We got our 1st color TV Zenith Console in 1965. I was 9! We had a real clicker remote. Volume up & down, channel up & down, and power. Each button on the remote "clicked" with a different sound for each function. As a bonus, no batteries were needed for the remote!
I was 14 when this song came out, love it just as much now as i did then. When a lot of these songs came out most of the young men were in Vietnam fighting.
Thanks for reacting to one of the most beautiful songs, sang perfectly by Bobby Hatfield. Bobby didn't sing falsetto. He did have an amazing octave range. He was a tenor that could reach the range of counter tenor.
It was originally written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained". It was used in the movie "Ghost". This was the way live performances were. Well dressed entertainers and well dressed audiences. Bobby passed away in 2003. Bill is still living. They were 25 when they did this performance.
Bill Medley has a great low voice. People don't ask for "Harlem Shuffle" probably because it didn't chart like some of their other tunes, but believe me, bluesy, soulful, sexy!
Bobby Hatfield had a cold singing this! Brill creme or spray in '60s. Beautiful sincere song! At 6, saw this on TV-as my young mom watched The Andy Williams Show.
The greatest live performance by a singer (not a group) of all time. One of the few live performances , that is actually better than the studio version.
The Celebrity Theater was one of my favorite venues when I lived there, no matter who was performing! I always made sure to get good tickets if I was buying them, but the couple times I had free tickets from the record labels where I was behind the band were still great experiences. 🎶💜
This was done live on the Andy Williams show in the NBC studio in NY city in Oct 1965 with Andy's orchestra & autotune had not been invented yet. The song had been out for a few weeks & was already a hit. Bill & Bobby put a solo on every album & both wanted to sing this song. They flipped a coin to determine who would sing this song. Bobby sang the song & Bill produced the song because Spector was busy with another act. When the song became a hit & they had to make a 2nd pressing of 45's, Spector"s name replaced Bill's as producer. I have a 1st pressing of this song on 45 as well as the album. BTW Bobby was sick with a cold & sore throat. His mother was sitting behind him on the first row raised seating usually reserved for performers or people who worked the show. They had replaced the Osmonds for this show. This was the song played in the pottery scene in GHOST. You also should listen to Bill & Jennifer Warnes' I,VE HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE from Dirty Dancing. Bobby died in 2003 from a MI brought on by his lifestyle.
The first color TV was introduced to the TV buying public in 1953 and costs as much as a small New car at the time.. The first TV series to be filmed in color from beginning to end was a western called Bonanza in 1959, starring Lorne Green as Ben Cartwright. The first major TV series to be filmed in color from beginning to end was Star Trek in 1966, starring William Shatner as Captain James Tyberius Kirk😮😊
His mother was in the audience and he was singing this song for her. BTW, if you listen very closely, some of the words sound like he didn't breath through his nose at all, because he didn't. He had a cold while he was singing this song.
Bobby Hatfield singing here was only 25 or 26 at the time and singing live with his mother in the audience. And just want to add am really enjoying your reactions.
You are at the door for the classics. In fact you have arrived. I remember them so well. I am a huge fan. This is always popular, still after so many years. That is what a classic is
He was both nervous and sick. He had a head cold. Still nailed it. Still heavenly. The GOAT Bobby Hatfield. Edit: Not a falceto, he was a contra tenor. He had a wide musical range.
The man singing is Bobby Hatfield the dark-haired one is Bill Medley. They sing other songs where they sing together and another one of their more popular songs you’ve probably heard in top gun. It’s called.” you’ve lost that loving feeling.”
the movie is "Ghost." Bobby Hatfield (the one singing here) died in 2003 shortly after the Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Bill Medley, the other one (who you shoulld hear on their song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin') still performs with Bucky Heard as the Righteous Brothers in Las Vegas.
They actually had just finished singing together, and then host Andy Williams came over to do the interview, which turn out really fun, giving you a sense of their personalities. Andy Williams was a famous singer who had his own TV show for 9 years. He had sung Battle Hymn of the Republic at Senator Robert F. Kennedy's funeral in 1968 [Kennedy was assassinated a month after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr]. Little known fact: In 1964 before the Righteous Brothers became nationally famous, they were asked to be one of the warmup acts for the Beatles USA tour in August and September. they left the tour after a few weeks, they had anew recording contract, couldn't stand all the screaming in the audiences, they couldn't hear themselves. . After that they were off and running with a string of big hits TV and movie appearances. Their kind of music was labeled "Blue Eyed Soul." People of any background loved these guys, the girls used to scream for them almost as much as the Beatles.
Bill's comment at the start that he didn't know the song would be a hit was just for the comedy value. They both loved the song and flipped a coin to see which of them would get to sing it as a solo, and Bobby won.
This song was written in 1955 for the prison movie "Unchained". Many artists did well with this song but Bobby Hatfield changed it up a little in 1965. Everyone that sang it after him used his version. In 1990 it was in the movie "Ghost" bringing the song back to the billboard charts. The Righteous Brothers Re-recorded it and both versions 1965 & 1990 were in the top 20 on the billboard for weeks making history which has never been done again. It was black Marines from El Toro Marine Base that gave the boys their name. The Marines came to hear them sing the blues and loved them and they called them their righteous brothers. When the boys cut their first record they used that name The Righteous Brothers. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of 2003. Bobby Hatfield died in November of 2003. Bill Medley is now 84 and still performing.
They were called "Righteous" because they sang R&B that would knock your socks off. They had many hit love songs but their "Tear the Roof Off" R&B was what the fans looked forward to every week on the TV show called "Shindig". That show launched a lot of careers for young artists like Glen Campbell who was also a regular, Sonny and Cher, Bobby Sherman and many more. Their catalog is huge so I hope you get a chance to view as many videos as possible. They never disappoint.
"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration", and "Rock and Roll Heaven", are some more Righteous Brothers music you should check out.
I missed this. I’m so glad you reacted to The Righteous Brothers! You so need to react to Bobby Hatfield singing “Summertime” Live. It’s truly amazing! ❤
Thank you for including the interview... So many reactors skip the interview, then ask questions that were answered in the interview... like "Where is the other brother?"... or "How did they get their name?" This is Bobby Hatfield singing, and featured in the movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore... If you want another song from one Bill, the other brother, in a song from another iconic movie from the '80s... Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes singing "I Had the Time of My Life" from the movie "Dirty Dancing" with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey... I guess Patrick Swayze could really get the talent in for his movies... and BTW... Patrick Swayze also performed some of the songs on "Dirty Dancing" too... "She's Like the Wind" was one..
No autotune! Pure singing, using his voice to the max. Pure Masculine presence.
The song had a huge resurgence after the move "Ghost".
It was first in a 1950's film called Unchained.
"GHOST" is an Incredible movie!! Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg did great. RIP Patrick.
The definition of blue eyed soul for all time never any better
No theatrics, he don’t even break a sweat. That incredible voice was a gift 😍
Just straight talent; no flash, no dancers, no autotune, just a pure, live REALNESS. Great reaction!!! ❤

People don't ask for "Harlem Shuffle" probably because it didn't chart like some of their other tunes, but believe me, bluesy, soulful, sexy!
I'm sure it's been in quite a few movies, but it's most well known in Ghost.
Bobby Hatfield had a cold singing this! Brill creme or spray in '60s. Beautiful sincere song! At 6, saw this on TV-as my young mom watched The Andy Williams Show.
Bill Medley is still living and is 84, Bobby Hatfield died in 2003 at age 63. The movie was Ghost
I remember this in the movie Ghost. You definitely hit a classic with this song 🎶
"I didn't think it was gonna be a hit"was a joke. Bill actually produced the song. They always did a little comedy bit before each TV appearance.
Sheesh, is there anything in your comment that's accurate apart from auto tune not existing back then! It made my head hurt.
Great! Live and no auto tune crap
Now, you must react to You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling
They are amazing singing together.
That is what a classic is
Serious baby making music. Such a great song
To hear them both, watch You've Lost that Lovin Feeling
He was both nervous and sick. He had a head cold. Still nailed it. Still heavenly. The GOAT Bobby Hatfield.
Edit: Not a falceto, he was a contra tenor. He had a wide musical range.
I Had the Time of my Life from Dirty Dancing. Bill Medley the tall, skinny one) sings it.
This was actually the B-side "throwaway music" for their single Hung On You. DJ's preferred it, and started playing it instead.
Such a beautiful song, I remember my Dad playing this on his record player ❤
Bobby Hatfield(the one singing the song) sadly passed away awhile ago but Bill Medley is still alive.
Voice tune that. Oh wait you can't...❤😂
This is known as blue-eyed soul! Pure talent, no auto-tune!!
One of the most beautiful song ever!
You're probably thinking about "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
59 years ago. I was born in 65 😊
Next song from them you need to hear is "You lost that loving feeling"
I love you! You had me rollin ovah here! It was like watching myself in the mirror tryin to figure out it’s from “Ghost”! 😂🫶🏼🫰🏼❤
I missed this. I’m so glad you reacted to The Righteous Brothers! You so need to react to Bobby Hatfield singing “Summertime” Live. It’s truly amazing! ❤
Absolutely love this song.
the hair Brylcreem
Little dab'll do yah!
I remember my Dad putting it in his and my brothers hair, it was the style back in the day.
Thank you for including the interview... So many reactors skip the interview, then ask questions that were answered in the interview... like "Where is the other brother?"... or "How did they get their name?"
This is Bobby Hatfield singing, and featured in the movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore...
Absolutely incredible!!!
