When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like me
You can bet just as sure as you live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
When an irrepressible smile such as yours
Warms an old implacable heart such as mine
Don't say no because I insist
Somewhere, somehow
Someone's gotta be kissed
So, en garde, who knows what the fates might have in store
From their vast mysterious sky
I'll try hard ignorin' those lips that I adore
But how long can anyone try?
Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight it with all of our might
Chances are some heavenly star-spangled night
We'll find out just as sure as we live
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
Something's gotta give
When an irresistible force such as you
Meets an old immovable object like "YOU"

Realistically speaking Fred Astaire seemed a most unlikely romantic lead, and yet when he sang these classic popular numbers he conveyed a certain indefinable magic. It goes without saying the dance choreography is simply out of this world.
One of the great iconic scenes from the golden years of Hollywood musicals.
Everyone do loves Fred Astaire, that's reality, no words, he reminds us how life is rare and really much worth to be lived and loved and highly respected. Merci beaucoup from Paris France.
FRED IS FABULOUS - AND LESLEY IS LOVELY TOO!
Thanks..
I always found Fred Astaire very attractive in a kind of offbeat way. He certainly mesmerized many movie going women in his day with his unique charm and boatloads of charisma (not to mention his superior turpsecorian skills).
Fred could certainly float my boat any day!
This is my favourite Fred Astaire clip. So many to choose from as he was just the best most innovative dancer. Caron was classically trained, unlike him, but somehow they just look so wonderful together. Look how generous he is as a dancer with her. It's not just charming but clever. He knows how to show off his partner. She, in turn, is lovely and they have real chemistry.
Fred was the only movie star who could woo a girl onscreen 30 years his junior and it didn’t somehow come off as creepy.
He is depicted as reluctantly giving into his deeper feeling, after at first treating her as a nuisance whom he will finance out of duty. He is not a stalker or predator in the story.
In reality Fred was in the first phase of mourning the wife to whom he had been devoted for 20 years. The last thing on his mind was to flatter himself by a dalliance with a much younger woman, and he could and would not play a guy who fancied one.
Wow. Just wow. It doesn’t get better than this. The beauty, the grace, the music, the dancing - what we’ve lost and what we’ll never be able to duplicate in today’s Hollywood. How lucky we were to have had it.
Outstanding scene ever in Hollywood history ! Merci beaucoup from Paris France.
Leslie Caron was so beautiful so charming. So elegant. Yes, Fred is in a class all to himself. I adored him since I was a child. My dad was a great dancer who always wished he had been a professional. He didn't but i grew up watching every old musical on Tv with him when I was a kid every weekend. I used to dance when I was a kid. Started ballet at 5 took dancing lessons seriously for 10 years.
Flawless. If you observe closely, you will notice that neither one of them makes a SINGLE misstep. (disclaimer - I am probably Fred's BIGGEST fan.) Btw, you should also watch the dance number "Sluefoot", from the same movie. It was the first dance number they did together, (recorded out of sequence). At the end, when the group hoists them on their shoulders, you will notice Fred leans toward Leslie, and says something in her ear. There were no mics close enough to record what he said, but it was "...you were beautiful..." (it was the first time they danced together on camera). REAL class !!!
Actually I am Fred's biggest fan. He is the sexiest man I've ever seen. No one else can move like that!!
Without doubt the best number in the film, the fluidity of their dancing is simply breathtaking and they make it appear so effortless which belies the hard work that must have gone into it. Superb!
Traveller Fair: "...hard work..." Add planning, blocking, camera and sound angles, etc. Fred rehearsed every dance number he did for a minimum of 2 weeks, up to six weeks for some of the more complicated routines !! There was a dance number he did with Ginger Rogers (dammit, I can't remember the name of the film) where they climbed a long set of stairs on camera right.
They started to shoot the sequence around 6:00 A.M., and finally "rapped" at 11:00 P.M. !! Ginger's feet were bleeding by the time they finished !! (true). Yes, in case nobody knew it, (you could tell from what was on the final "take") he was the consummate pro. ,
@@johnstewart6366 I think you mean the song 'Never Gonna Dance' from Swing Time
AN incredible and incontournable and incomparable spectacle of dancing ever for history, in Stereophonic Soundtrack, Technicolor print and Cinemascope Wide Screen rendering Optical session ever! BRAVO! MERCI BEAUCOUP! Emmanuel from Paris France
I love these musicals.. always loved this song, my mom brought us up on musicals. I'm 72 but from a kid we always watched late 30,a 40 movies. I'm glad she did then found on my. 😊 Love it

Fantastic
it's just so good, so thrilling, so never will see the like of this again. but we have it to watch when we want to, and i, for one, am very grateful. lovely song, lovely paring, it; just so...
Despite being a massive Astaire Rogers fan, I think this scene is the epitome of Astaire’s elegance. Mixing the stiffness of a tuxedo that has been made slightly less formal with the soft shirt and turndown collar with a very suave and discreet mannerism. Obviously because this Is Fred, he’s never missing out on the details: The lapel carnation is still there!
FABULOUS incredible Fred Astaire no way in this stereophonic TechiColor CinemaScope Incredible rendering original print no way! No words for this incredible impeccable rendition spectacle! MERCI BEAUCOUP! Emmanuel from Paris France
Poor Fred, his beloved wife whom he adored died suddenly when filming this movie. He offered to pay all costs for this movie because he wanted to quit but was persuaded to stay.
AmericanPatriot I never realised Fred Astaire’s wife died whilst they were making this.
R.I.P
@@carltrotter7622 Not true. She died when he was making The Bandwagon.
@@rosienorton665 Phyllis died September 1954 when he began filming this film. He took time off to grieve, wasn’t sure he could come back & finish the film but was pursuaded that going back to work would help him.
That all depends! He is the greatest Dancer and SINGER ever NO way NO words! BRAVO! Perfect rendering! MERCI BEAUCOUP from Emmanuel from PARIS FRANCE
How he managed to do sophistication, boyishness and sex appeal all at once, I'll never know.💞

I don't follow the subtitles, but the tune and the lyrics are superb. Astaire and Caron make an unlikely pairing due to the age difference. But who cares ?
+pertinax The age difference, indeed. And yet, 'Daddy Long-Legs' is the 1955 musical adaptation of Jean Webster’s 1912 novel. In movies, Mary Pickford, Janet Gaynor and even Shirley Temple had a go of it. There’s even an anime version.
The story deals with a wealthy businessman, benefactor to the protagonist, a young girl in college. The two have never met. In the movie version, he decides to do so but does not reveal his identity. Family and friends advise against any perceived impropriety. Soon after, he develops affection for her (this sequence) so he chooses to stay away. Long after, he will reveal his identity and they do become romantically involved.
BTW: the revelation sequence is another delightful, brief, sequence. Look up under ‘Daddy Long Legs (1955) Part 15/15’ here.
Where casting matters are concerned, which male star of the time other than Astaire, 54 at the time, could have performed these musical numbers? Without him, no movie, I should think. The same applies to Astaire and Cyd Charisse in ‘The Band Wagon’, 1953 and in ‘Silk Stockings’, 1957; or Astaire and Audrey Hepburn in ‘Funny Face’, 1957, all highly treasurable flicks not to be missed.
Brilliant song, when they made this actors had to be capable of doing anything! Not just one type of film, whatever studios wanted. James Stewart even took a turn as a song and dance man.
THE BEST EVER FRED ASTAIRE DANCING VERSION! MERCI BEAUCOUP FOR THIS INCREDIBLE HISTORICAL RENDERING VERSION VERY RYTHMY EVER ALSO! BRAVO! MERCI BEAUCOUP, THANKS SO MUCH! Emmanuel from Paris France
for some reason this movie works. and this wonderful song/number is an important part of it look at Funny Face, for instance. for all Audrey Hepburn;s charm, and limited song and dancing, it fails because Fred and Audrey do not work together, like Fred and Leslie. funny, but oh so true. the last really good number Fred did in a musical, and he would probably admit it. afterwards, he knew when to quit.
I agree ; it could have something to do with Leslie being shorter than Fred , thus able to wear flattering high heels.
The best ever stereophonic scene ever! Somewhere BRAVO from deep from really deep for Fred Astaire in Technicolor print ever and Stereophonic Soundtrack ever no way!BRAVO for this incredible spectacle in Wide Screen ever from PARIS FRANCE. Emmanuel
Fairytale with a happy ending with a wonderful song (something's go to give)....
What can I say. No words.
💙🔥💙 Twin Flames....Fred Astaire Style.... #DanceWithMeForever
Briliant! In these day's actors were required to do more than act! Remember Leslie Caron in G.I Blues with Elvis, possibly one with Cary Grant, stuck for title.
Love the dancing and the Johnny Mercer lyrics are great! Now where can I rent an apartment like Fred's (in mid-town Manhattan, of course) for $65- OK, $70, a month?
This is actually a hotel suite in the film, not an apartment. You should see the house he lives in.
Years later in real life, he would marry his longtime (tho' years younger than he was)... beloved Robin Smith. It was to everyone's delight, a love match. She was devoted, there close by when Astaire passed away.
It did not delight Fred's kids and stepson, by all accounts.
60 years old this year.
Fred and Leslie, enormously good and exciting, in this, and a wonderful song as well. Fred and Audrey in Funny Face...not so much, compared to this.
brilliant number despite the age difference. Did Johnny Mercer write this number ?
Yes he did 😊
HE IS THE GREATEST EVER NO WAY! IN STEREOPHONIC SOUNTRACK EVER! GOOD NIGHT SWEAT HEART! Emmanuel from Paris France
Where did all the great movies go? Todays movies are junk .Remember hair dressers, costumes, choreography, rehearsals ,etc, Lotta time and money involved. Now they crank out these drug chasing movies in a week. Pitiful.
Music and Lyrics from a songwriter who usually wrote only lyrics -- Johnny Mercer. One wonders why he didn't write more music.
