    A phrase I have said before, and remind myself of often to keep things in balance is thus:
    "I am blessed to worry about losing what others can only dream of having."
    It helped a lot to deal with some things when I was at my lowest point a few years ago. Puts things into perspective a little.

    I learned about stoicism a long time ago, and it actually helped me go through challenging times in my life. When I stopped caring about things I can't control it really helped me with decision-making a lot and reduced stress that I had to endure about life in general. Also the principle that is realted to the topic but I think I got it from zen buddhism, is to stop feeling sorrow about past mistakes. Life goes on, bad decision were made, and the only thing that lies ahead is future, so in a way, the past mistakes, bad decisions, are also things that I can't control (anymore). They should serve as experience to help make better decisions later on, but there's no reason to complain about it, because nobody has the power to change the past.

      I use this philosophy in almost everything except when talking about people. People have value, have feelings and we should be concerned sometimes. If a friend tells you his father have died you can't just say, well it would have happened anyway. No, its sad and you have to show empathy.

Men are more prone to make risky choices and behaviors.

    I defeated most of my bosses, I lived homeless, ate from trashcans, slept over humid cold concrete, completely rough and none of it really dealt me true damage, but after my second relationship with my first GF ended, I've spiralled into the deepest of depression, I've been stuck in this boss for years. I'm somewhat better now, but to be hit by an obstacle so humongous that even the wisest of all teachings couldn't support me was scary af. I'm in the period where I know the boss pattern, all I have to do now is increase my efficiency.

    Having read Seneca and Marcus Aurelius only once, and by no means trying to be an expert, both talk about the importance of the gods and nature in determining everything. How important is religious perceptions to stoicism and, if they can be separated, how can stoicism thrive without that religious belief?

    And Marcus not actually the one exception there are tons of examples of good and righteous rulers that had absolute or close to absolute power throughout history that had discipline, restraint, virtue and honour that quote about power is extremely problematic but of course it does still have merit I’m not saying it doesn’t 🙏

    When you use the argument about “one last time” in which you should view every action as the last time you’ll ever do it, could that not just be used as an excuse for hedonism which is un-stoic? Couldn’t someone just indulge themselves glutinously and make the excuse that it could be their last time doing it?

    • @cq6976
      @cq6976 2 года назад +2

      Living for physical pleasure is not stoic. He briefly covered virtues but didn't go into much detail. Stoics make sure that their every action reflects the 4 stoic virtues, courage, wisdom, temperance, and justice. So if you are using "one last time" make sure that your actions are as virtuous as possible because any moment can be your last chance to live a life worth living. And if you don't die so fast, you will have built a truly amazing life with all these last moment. Do you want to go out like stoic boss or like a weak pleasure seeking hedonist?

      The technique that was taught to me by Massimo Pigliucci (per my memory) for dealing with losses is to treat everything you owned or will ever own as books borrowed from this library called our universe. Sooner or later, the universe would want the books back. This includes your loved ones, your friends, and your limbs. Just enjoy it while it last.

    Só stoicism is just basically conservatism

    • @patrickchuan4550
      @patrickchuan4550 Год назад

      It is really problematic to view ancient Greek philosophy from 2000 years of Christianity standpoint. Even the meaning of the words get twisted beyond recognition. For example souls, god worshipping , daimon, ethics, arete, virtue, etc.
      Suffice to say, Stoicism is really just rebranding of Socrates's teaching, together with new-flanged logical rational way of thinking (that no one bother to teach), with entry-level mastery of logos. Also, from time to time, content of Stoicism lessons was modified in order to make it suitable as part of the education of young rich kids. Stoicism was always the more popular philosophy because of it's middle ground approach compared to Epicureanism (the popular form of hedonism), Pyrrhonism (the popular form of skepticism which you though was conservatism), Platonism (Plato's rebranding of Socrates's teaching), and Peripatetic (Aristotle's rebranding of Socrates's teaching).
      Why is Socrates's teaching considered middle ground? It is just simple fact that if you try experience as many different option as possible (in a safe and controlled manner, remember that we are talking about rich kids here), then you will automatically choose the appropriate action. This is the real meaning of equanimity (balance of the mind). Knowledge is virtue, ignorance is vice. If you have the correct knowledge, you automatically choose the right action.
      Why Plato's (best student) and Aristotle's (best student of best student) brand of Socratism was not the most popular, compared to Zeno of Citium (outsider, never meet Socrates)'s Stoicism? I don't really know. Maybe those additional metaphysic stuffs was useless? Perhaps Socrates was just a really simple guy?
      When Socrates said he knows nothings, it just means that he has so much knowledge that all new knowledge started to invalidate existing knowledge. He was not trying to be cheeky.
      When Socrates uses his Socratic Method™, he'd never intended to burst other people balls or to show the deficiency of others. He simply wanted to learn even if the other people only have fragmented knowledge inside them.
