      The movie was poorly received at the time. It was simply just too sophisticated for most people, who were not well educated enough to really appreciate it. No big deal for Chaplin, he was super rich, and the fact that he received a lot of recognition and prestige for having made the film was probably worth a lot more to him than it being popular or profitable.

      It's also worth nothing that this was the first and only non-silent movie which Chaplin made or acted in. He wrote, produced, directed, and starred in it, then he retired from cinema afterward. What a legend.

    Charlie was a genius social and political satirist. A food fight between two dictators meeting up to sign a peace treaty in an international conference! That's pure gold!!
    With the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it is not far fetched to imagine a food fight between Putin and Zelensky/Biden as they meetup to negotiate a settlement. ☺️

      He had something similar with Franco where Franco was purposely late, spoke in a high pitched voice and argued with Hitler over how much he would support the war and what it would take.

    This reminds me of something I read about Hitler and Mussolini. When Mussolini came to visit Hitler in Berlin the entourage was dressed in uniforms that were designed by, er, designers - you know, the 1930s version of Gucci and Versace. Hitler one-upped them by wearing a simple, unadorned suit.
