The movie was poorly received at the time. It was simply just too sophisticated for most people, who were not well educated enough to really appreciate it. No big deal for Chaplin, he was super rich, and the fact that he received a lot of recognition and prestige for having made the film was probably worth a lot more to him than it being popular or profitable.
It's also worth nothing that this was the first and only non-silent movie which Chaplin made or acted in. He wrote, produced, directed, and starred in it, then he retired from cinema afterward. What a legend.
I agree. The Great Dictator is the greatest film that Charlie ever made. And so is City Lights, Modern Times, The Gold Rush, The Circus, and quite a few others.
All those silent movies and when they gave him a voice, he gave us THIS! Written, directed and financed by himself and against great opposition and criticism. His final speech at the end sums it all up really. Thank you Charlie Chaplin
I know right! now the corperate goons are so creatively bankrupt that view film as an industry and actors and stories as assets they reduce cinematography to face shots of celebrities and callbacks to real creative artwork as if to say (we have x star and own x franchise therefore you must give us money) And the worst part is, the masses do, Art is dead

Charlie was a genius social and political satirist. A food fight between two dictators meeting up to sign a peace treaty in an international conference! That's pure gold!! With the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, it is not far fetched to imagine a food fight between Putin and Zelensky/Biden as they meetup to negotiate a settlement. ☺️
He had something similar with Franco where Franco was purposely late, spoke in a high pitched voice and argued with Hitler over how much he would support the war and what it would take. Hitler allegedly claimed he would rather pull his teeth out than speak with Franco again.

This reminds me of something I read about Hitler and Mussolini. When Mussolini came to visit Hitler in Berlin the entourage was dressed in uniforms that were designed by, er, designers - you know, the 1930s version of Gucci and Versace. Hitler one-upped them by wearing a simple, unadorned suit.
The funny thing is the actor who played Mussolini acted exactly like Mussolini when he gave a speech. He nailed his character lmao
