Sicilian vs Italian - What’s The Difference? Here's a sneak peak at what we will cover in this lesson.
Here are some Sicilian words borrowed from other languages that are still used today:
1. carusu (in Italian it's 'ragazzo' - guy), from the Greek “kouros”
2. cirasa (in Italian it's 'ciliegia' - cherry) from the Greek “kerasos”
3. a st'ùra (in Italian it's 'a quest'ora' - at this time) from the Latin “ad istam horam”
4. prescia (in Italian it's 'fretta' - hurry) from the Latin “premere”
5. abbanniari (in Italian it's 'gridare' - to shout) from the German “bandujan”
The definite articles in Sicilian are:
u for “il” (the, masculine), as in u cavaddu (il cavallo - the horse)
a for “la” (the, feminine), as in a mugghìera (la moglie - the wife)
i for “i” and “le” (the, both masculine and feminine plural), as in i fimmini (le donne - the women)
The indefinite articles in Sicilian are:
nu for “uno” (a, masculine), as in nu picciriddu (un bambino - a kid)
na for “una” (a, feminine), as in na para di (un paio di - a pair of)

I ❤ my Sicilian language & I’m so glad that my parents , grandparents & all my aunts & uncles spoke it to all of us.
The way you explained the historical influences on Sicilian, from the Greeks to the Spanish, was fascinating. It's amazing how each civilization left its mark on the language. Ti ringraziu pi la tò educazioni! I can't wait to learn more from your channel.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this video Tina 😊I love researching and learning more about history and languages 🙏
Very interesting. I remember from my history lessons that when Italy unified in 1861, only a tiny percentage (? 2%) of the population could speak standard modern Italian...
What does It means If not the Sicilian have nothing tò do with the Italian volk?
I want to learn Sicilian I’ve been practicing Italian for a while now. Is there an audio book or more videos that help with Sicilian. I’d love to be able to speak my family’s native language.
Do you have any plans for a lesson on il Barese? Or the more general Pugliese?
Can you please do a video on Calabrian vs Italian?
Thank you very much for this video 🧡
Grazie 🌺🌷🌸
