    Back in 2012, I single-handedly went down the same YDNA research path to establish my own Mayflower descendance from Edward Fuller (to me an 11th great-grandfather). I found a correctly descended male Fuller living in Nevada (with whom I share my 5th great-grandfather Fuller) who agreed to do the YDNA test and in early 2013 the test results were a positive match to all other tested Fuller males who have complete paper trails pointing to Edward Fuller. This research took me exactly one year to accomplish. There were MANY dead-ends, disappointments and a lot of nail-biting along the way, but in the end, it was a success and what a journey it was.

    Hi. I am descended from George via his great granddaughter Prudence Wilcox who married Col. Nathan Taylor of Charlestown, Rhode Island. I'm afraid I disagree with you over his origins. I am almost certain he was NOT from an English family. I've been researching him for many years. I feel confident he 's from a Belgian Walloon family that was living in London then in Leiden. I believe he became associated with Winslow when he was operating the Brewster Press with John Soule (likely George's older brother), and George helped them. The Sol/Solis/Soule family may well have known Winslow from his London days too, they were involved in printing. John (son of Jan/John/Johannes) who was Winslow and Brewster's assistant died in an ink accident about the time that King James had ordered Brewster's arrest and he went into hiding. John's pregnant widow fled with John's apprentice Edward Raban to Scotland, where she had the baby and that line ended up in Australia (confirmed by YDNA testing which matches the American lines of George Soule). Raban even published a work afterward in Scotland regarding the episode. The family worshiped at the Walloon Churches in the area, also with the Pilgrims. THAT is how they were associated. They may also have known Winslow in London earlier when Winslow was there, there are records of their presence in London prior. Jeremy Bangs has found information about them. Also, the names of John Soule Sr.'s children in Leiden (he was also a printer and knew the Winslows and Brewsters -worshipped at same churches) are extremely similar to those of George. Not also how George spelled his name in various signings. I think you need to focus your search efforts in Belgium and Holland. Also, check the Australian Soule family which DNA matches, this has already been documented, I'm surprised you haven't seen it already. Also George and his family started the Pilgrim Press again after religious persecution tensions had died down in the colonies. I feel in my bones he was NOT English. As Sue Allan suggests, there may be no birth record for him due to fear of persecution as dissenters/walloons/huguenots etc. Or he was born in London or other city in Holland or Wallonia (Belgium), or even Germany. The families moved around in those days for various reasons. You need to look at the broad picture, not just focus on obscure in hypothetical connections. The SOL/Solis/Soule famil WAS associated with Winslow and Brewster in LEIDEN. That is the family you should be focusing on. Do not forget there were Walloons and Huguenots associated with the Pilgrims also in Leiden and Amsterdam, indeed many of the early voyages over, and that came on the later ships as well. I dont think you have all of the information that's available right now. I'm glad you are looking, but I strongly suggest you focus your efforts on Belgium and Holland. There is a Jan Johann Van Sol Solius Solis the AnaBaptist of Dordrecht, Leiden, Amsterdam, Robitten, Bardeyn, East Prussia, Danzig and Brussels a couple generations prior that I'm almost certain this family descends from. Kind regards, Taylor

    • @mayflowerhistory4391
      @mayflowerhistory4391  3 года назад +3

      Hi Taylor, thanks for your comment and for watching. Johannis Sol might be a relative of George Soule in some way. But unfortunately much of the research into this family is based on highly speculative hypotheses and not actual fact. Edward Raban, for example, simply wrote in the prefix of one of his books that his master was an irreligious wealthy man who regularly broke the Sabbath and died in a fire while boiling a vat of varnish. But Raban did NOT mention the name of his master. A researcher proposed that perhaps the master was Sol, and weaved a story around it, but without any hard evidence. To my mind, a wealthy, irreligious man, does not seem to match up that well with a refugee Walloon family that was presumably poor and highly religious. The Australian man of Scottish descent's DNA test (which is posted on the Soule Kindred DNA project on FamilyTreeDNA) simply shows a similar yDNA signature to George Soule. A researcher very speculatively hypothesized this meant that the hypothetically-dead Sol's widow (building a new hypothesis on an already speculative hypothesis) went with Raban to Scotland and had a hypothetical son from her then-hypothetically-deceased husband who then changed his surname to Forrest, whose descendants then ended up in Australia. Or, it could just be that Forrest and Soule share a male ancestor much further back in time, which seems far more likely to me. I am definitely familiar with the Sol family's sojourn to the Walloon church at Austin Friars, London. Simon and I are the researchers that uncovered the Sol family's admission to the church there in 1585, ahead of the Sol/Labis marriage in 1586, and we found them in the tax records there as well in 1583 listed as a stocking-maker. Jeremy Bangs makes no claims that the Sols of Leiden were the ancestors of George Soule. He simply states on page 300 of his "Strangers and Pilgrims" that "we might speculate that George Soule could have been the son of John Soule a Leiden book printer." I fully agree with that statement: it is a reasonable speculation. We plan to do more research in both the Netherlands and England when the pandemic lets up. There are good candidate Soules still in England as well. In 2018 we published one of them: Edward Winslow's wife Elizabeth Barker was from East Bergholt and Chattisham, and her father Samuel had several interactions in the manorial records there with a man named John Soule. We have a few candidates left to investigate elsewhere in England as well.

      The possibilities are many. Since Brewster and Winslow were in Leiden and involved in the printing of Perth Assembly along with Johannes Sol, it stands to reason George Soule could be Johannes' brother. It makes sense that George would have had some connection to Brewster and Winslow to have been able to and invited to make passage on the Mayflower especially since George served Winslow. It's quite interesting to ponder and I do hope to eventually learn more through records or DNA.

    My 9th generation Grandfather was Jean Souille’ . He was a passenger on the HMS Nassau that brought French Huguenots from Britain in the late 1600’s. They settled in Manikentowne, Va. (Richmond). Wonder if he was related to Soullle’ French Protestants from Southern France? Many migrated to England fleeing Catholic. persecution in the early 1600’s.

    • @mayflowerhistory4391
      @mayflowerhistory4391  3 года назад +2

      It is not unreasonable that Soule could be from Huguenot ancestry; there is also a Huguenot Sol family that should be investigated further too. If we could find a modern-day Souille-surnamed man willing to take a yDNA test, it would be possible to see if their yDNA matched that of the descendants of George Soule.

      Regarding George Soule. Your hypothesis about George being desended fron French Huegonots makes sense. Those were my thoughts. Another possibility would be, was he a bastardized( illegitimate) son of someone in England perhaps known to the Pilgrims? Was he an orphan who was adopted or accepted into a family & for matters of probity assumed the name Soule. If the latter 2 cases are correct there may not be a DNA link through the father.

    George Soule was my 9th great-grandfather. He was the 25th sigher of the Mayflower Compact,. Rumors circulated on a rebellion upoin arrival, I suspect Geroge Soule was one of those plotting the rebellion, So Bradford drew up the Mayflower Compact to pledge to unite as One body polickt
    After surviing the starving times. the Ann arrived with a resupply Bringing many of pilgirms family, and Mary Becket was among them. Steve Warling and I did similar y-DNA research on the Gifford family in England, in order to determine the origins of William Gifford (d. 1687), of Sandwich, Massachusetts, many of whom are Soule descendants. We identified something like 15 English clusters and got the DNA signatures of many of them, but nothing matched.

    Interesting. We have the great fortune of having a family member who did the detailed genealogy research of the Soule family going back to 1620. One of documents includes the Soule family bible (ca. 1790) in which a record of the births and deaths were recorded. My grandfather, Thanet Francis Soule, (1898 to 1972) has an unusual first name. The Isle of Thanet is within Kent County. We would need to go back and carefully examine the research the possible birthplace of George Soule. Curious. My middle name is Thanet. Although I knew my great grandmother the reason for giving her son the name Thanet was never explained.

Feel free to reach out to me (my contact info is on MayflowerHistory.com) if you'd like to participate. We could probably confirm for you whether you descend from the Gloucestershire family (we've tested three men so far from this family); and if not, we might be able to pinpoint which family you do descend from.
