"Marvel's Runaways, or simply Runaways, is an American web television series created for Hulu by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films and other television series of the franchise. The series is produced by ABC Signature Studios, Marvel Television and Fake Empire Productions, with Schwartz and Savage serving as showrunners.
Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, and Allegra Acosta star as the Runaways, six teenagers from different backgrounds who unite against their parents, the Pride, portrayed by Angel Parker, Ryan Sands, Annie Wersching, Kip Pardue, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Brigid Brannagh, Kevin Weisman, Brittany Ishibashi, and James Yaegashi. A film from Marvel Studios based on the Runaways began development in May 2008, before being shelved in 2013 due to the success of The Avengers. In August 2016, Marvel Television announced that Runaways had received a pilot order from Hulu, after being developed and written by Schwartz and Savage. Casting for the Runaways and the Pride were revealed in February 2017. Filming on the pilot began in Los Angeles in February 2017. The series was officially ordered by Hulu in May 2017.

I just want to clarify something, I'm aware there have been gay secondary characters in the MCU, the implication of me saying "Big Gay Kiss" is that the kiss was between two titular characters, and not secondary characters, or a main character and a secondary character. Meaning the LGBT representation in Agent Carter, and Jessica Jones, is not relevant at all to what I was talking about (although very important).

I really think that the "staff of one" in the show could be magic and Tina lied to her daughter about it. It could be that simple to fix it.
What I’m getting from the show is Alex is a Computer Scientist and Chase is an Engineer. They seem similar on the outside looking in but being an Engineering major I know the two attract very different people. A lot of engineers don’t even like to code. One is more a physical space and the other is more of an abstract/mental space.
They work well together but don’t often exist in the same person at the same level, if that makes sense.

Alex brings the wisdom I think, he's the reason the kids ever decide to find out what their parents are doing and why the group decide on running when everyone else aside from Molly think of staying.

My friend hates superhero stuff (though have been having an easier time getting them comics to read, recent Hellcat and Mr.Miracle specifically), they ended up really liking this show! With interest to read the original series!
I loved the show. I never really got upset when shows or movies change things from the source material. I usually just take shows and movies as an interpretation of existing characters. I just judge them based on acting abilities and storylines.
I don't think Alex will be the mole. In the comics, he had a reason to be on the side of the parents, which was the shot at living in utopia with Nico and their respective parents. The members of pride were working to give their kids a life in utopia (along with what the Gibborim gave them during those years), however, in the show, that isn't the reason the parents are doing these awful things. They don't even know what Jonah is trying to do.
It also shows Alex heavily distrusts his parents with everything from witnessing the murders, Amy's death, discovering how his father absolutely betrayed Darius, not getting Andre the help Alex wanted him to have, and ultimately Andre being sacrificed. Alex was devastated.
So, to me, they haven't shown any good reason that Alex would betray the group.
Didn’t Stacey say in episode 10 “that means molly had her powers when she was born or after that explosion” or something like that. Could they not be hinting towards mutants

Listen, The Staff of One not being magical irked me too. Nico is also my fav from the comics. I legit binged this show in 2 days and in between while at work I thought, "alright, maybe the Minorus put it together with tech, but how does it do the impossible? Its gotta be magic. Tina is lying." (Okay im probably wrong about the lying part but still.) I understand the changes they made for the tv show, cause obviously they have to change things in adaptations, so it bothered me that pretty much all the parents arent the supervillians we barely know. Like, no time traveling? No sorcerers? No aliens or mutants? AND their deal with Jonah isnt something they've 100% willingly went into? As a kid, I always found the pact they made to have their 6 children succeed them in the new world order super interesting, yet that doesnt happen. Even though its a far-from-perfect adaptation I'm kinda in love with this show. The fact that you never wouldve thought Marvel would actually do this as opposed to any of their other more popular comics, and THEN it turns out to be a more than decent show? I'm all in. Plus I'm super giddy that they did the ending exactly like the comics
PS. And, now that I think about it, but Nico didnt end up with the staff in the end right? So maybe she'll find the real Staff of One in their misadventures? One can hope.
My only thing with Alex is that in the comic there was room for a mole, it was all setup to be this one big scheme. But the show doesn't even have the same parents comic Alex was loyal to. I genuinely don't think Alex will be the bad guy in this series because of all the changes they made. I would absolutely love to see an exploration of the team with Alex never turning on them. He was my favorite character and to see him be the villain at the end and never come back for anything more than a cameo in later editions just crushed me.
Fuck man, this show is really good and I like how they changed it up from the comics.
Also: theory, I think that Gertrude might be psychic. Like yes, we know she had a psychic link with her dinosaur, BUT what if it’s more than that. I’ve been trying to find more evidence but Faust I wanna know your opinion on this
Thanks for the video dude. I'm only on episode 8 so far but enjoying it. I must say I like the parents a lot, even more than the kids. I've never read the source material though, I definitely want more of this

Alessia Marano i feel like it makes sense though because if you read how nico is with relationships in the comics, its all about her not being alone, and its kind of selfish but i also feel like thats the point but obviously in the tv show its slightly different and i do think that nico just kind of threw herself into the relationship with karolina and like you said, we dont know about nicos feelings but we’ll learn more in season two so!!

Gert was amazing! She was my favorite in the books, and I’m really happy she was portrayed well.

That would be too much of a departure from the comic series. People can only accept so much change before they’ve had enough.
I get that but I would give Alex some worth because more powerful characters are possibly coming and if he isn't the mole he would get left in the dust
A lot of the charm he has is that he is only human. To strip him of that, would remove a major part of the core of his character.
Once he goes to hell, he does learn how to use magic himself, so if he does turn out to be the mole, that could be visited in later seasons.
Faust I get it keep him human but another thing I didn't get was Tina had the so called staff of one in the finale and I didn't see Nico get it back I hope she finds a way to retrieve it or get a new like maybe the real one or the witchbreaker

I think Frank care more about himself than his daughter or the church, and getting himself a higher status, and the church can do that more than the kids.
I just did a review of the show, and I agree with you on a lot. I recently read the 2003 run of the comics, and I loved it. Still upset at the mole storyline and I don't really want them to do that. I'm rewatching the show again because I'm doing a piece about Alex because I have a lot of feelings on his treatment in the show. He's my favorite and I don't like a lot of what's happened or better yet what didn't happen. I do agree about the dynamic with him and Chase. I think there is a way for them to kind of bring Chase's intelligence down, he's smart but we haven't really SEEN him do anything other than work on the Fistiguns with his dad (like a few times) and be good with his hands, other than that, it wouldn't be too much of a big turnaround if they do that. So, they could work around that so Alex could be pushed up with his high intelligence and high wisdom which he does have but they haven't really let him portray it. Now that they're on the run, they could now let Chase have a higher wisdom since he is extremely naive so far. I liked the show a lot. I also think it makes more sense now for the mole (if they do it, I really hope they don't) to be either Karolina or Chase, probably Chase the most since he was the one who ruined a lot just because of his dad, I can imagine him doing it for that reason. Yeah, it could still be Alex but it seems out of character for him now whereas in the comics, while I did not see it coming, it made sense and I don't want his role to be the mole after the lack of love and care he got in the first season.
Great review. Like the show alot. And cant eait for S2. Also about agents of SHIELD, its gotten alot better. The whole team is a badass agent and bring something to the table. Hope u can give the show another shot, would love to hear your thoughts

there a gay characters that also kiss in season 1 of Jessica Jones on Netflix, nice review, I didn't read the books but I really enjoyed the 1st season and I'm not even the target audience lol

I've absolutely adored Runaways from episode 1 (no spoilers, please! The last episode hasn't aired in Canada yet and I'm so excited! Normally, I'm fine with spoilers, but I want to go into the finale as ignorant as I can). I adore all of the main characters, they truly are what make the show for me and any complaints or problems I have with the show are completely erased whenever I see the main cast together, they're all so great and I love them.
My biggest issues with the show as a whole are, in order of least to most, Chase's relationship with his dad. Seriously, Chase needs to get over his abusive father already and stop clinging to the one little sliver of kindness his dad showed to him. Next is Tina Minoru. I'm just not sure how the show is trying to make me feel about her, is she as bad as everyone says she is or is she not? Everyone says how much they hate her and how scary she is, then they give her a humanizing moment, and then she's going behind everyone's backs again. Is she as bad as everyone says or not? And finally, I actually don't really like Jonah. Grated, it may be saved in the finale, but I just don't really like how all the parents were basically manipulated and blackmailed into all of this because it removes a lot of the tension from the show. I liked it better when we saw the two sides of the parents, the good in front of their kids and the love they had for their kids vs. the evil when they're willing to do whatever they have to do to get what they want or do what they feel they have to, and introducing Jonah as the architect of the whole scheme kind of sucked a lot of that out of it for me.
Still, the show, overall, is amazing and I adore it so much. It's become my new obsession and I couldn't be happier to hear that it's getting a season two! I can't wait already! :D

Well, you have to realize that abuse victims actually act like that. That’s why people stay in abusive relationships even though they really shouldn’t. They show portrays every character differently depending on who’s POV we’re looking at. Everyone sees Tina as this strict and perfect boss like woman, but then we see how human and flawed she is from her POV. That’s also why the parents seem evil from the kids POV, but then nice from their POV.
It took them HOW LONG to run away?!?! I was pissed.... but I now do like seeing more about the parents. I just wished it didn’t consume so much. And the name annoyed me too. Also I really want Victor to come in in season 2. But I feel it’s gonna focus more on defeating the pride and they’ll probably have the parents sacrifice themselves to save their kids than the kids defeating them.
They’ll probably have Alex influenced by Jona somehow to keep the comics on the right track. And hopefully get the ring and book from jona?
And Niko and Carolina? I don’t mind it but I still want the Skrull and Carolina and Niko and Victor ships to sale.
But the fact that the staff isn’t addressed maybe it is the actual staff. Just not unlocked it’s full potential. Her mother does say she didn’t teach her everything.

I noticed that you really love the comic, I'm surprised that you want the show to adhere so much to it!
All shows and movies based on comics are adaptations, and as such liberties are inevitable, some minor, some extreme.
As a person who only has a passing knowledge of the books, I don't have the same issues with the characterization.
In fact as a minority, I'm really not too keen on Alex being a traitor and dying without the chance for redemption!
It's like Darwin in First Class all over.
It's bad enough that his parents are "gangsters", not sure who thought that was a good idea!
Gert doesn't interest me, she's a girl with a dinosaur, while her personality is fine, I find her to be just there.
All she does is pine after Chase, her parents are far more interesting to me.
I actually used to be pretty hardcore about adaptations, until I realized that they ruin characters in the books just as much!
So ultimately, it's just another writer's take on it, I still don't think that Kingdom Come can be done any other way though!
Great video! loved so much of it. I feel the same way about Alex and Chase. The changes to them weaken their overall character. Overall, I loved the show, but as always, I have to say the book was better. Also, it was sort of (not exactly) stated that the Church of Gib. is okay with homosexuality. Cant remember the exact episode, but when Karolina and Gert were searching K's house, Karolina said that the church is "...inclusive that way." Gert later agreed, to the point that she even approved of the church. Given both of these points (plus the fact that it is set in L.A. which, as a native Californian, I know is very pro-LGBT) points to a very inclusive belief system. Secondly, after convincing my girlfriend to read the comics, I realized that the season is actually the first collected edition of the first run. I hope that isn't a trend, because that means this run will be 3 seasons long. I CANT GO THAT LONG WITHOUT VICTOR BEING INTRODUCED!!! Anyways, great video! Cant wait for more!
p.s. What did you think of the fight between Jonah and Karolina? I thought that Majesdanians could only minimally effect each other with their powers?

I honestly hated the show. It was horribly slow paced and it felt like another cheap Freeform teen drama with the superpower element barely peppered in.

terra markov I think I read a crossover issue once but I would say that doesn't count. I get that it's not a superhero show but it seemed lacking in Marvel elements entirely and I guess that works for people but not me. There were a lot of elements that I wished were explored more, including their powers, or for the plot to even move forward at all. It just didn't do anything for me.

Sadly no. Victor Stein states that he either built or gave Tina the designs for the staff and that it is entirely technology. And is suggested to be alien tech.

Great Review Faust. I completely agreed with you on your point on Nico’s powers and the staff, it was a bit annoying but at least they called the staff “High Tech Magic”. With that being said I would love to see them actually introduce the staff of one. I love them all but, my favorite parent was of course, Tina. My favorite scene was Tina training Nico.

Edit: Forgot to mention this but there was a scene in doctor strange Tina Minoru was in. She was also in the Doctor Strange prequel one shot. So hopefully they actually make this fully cannon when they introduce magic.
The Showrunners of The Runaways have clarified that that character is not the Tina Minoru that was in the show, and they reinvented the character.
Since it's been acknowledged that Runaways IS set in the MCU I'm so hoping that they'll be able to do a story arc w/Young Avengers...maybe Wiccan can help teach Niko magic (plus I mean sorry but I love Wiccan & Hulkling), and seeing Scarlet Witch's sons Wiccan & Speed as well the other members of the YA would be amazing (and possibly it could be spun off into Hulu's 2nd Marvel series)
Ray McNulty Well, for now, Wanda is too young to have teenage sons (although when Tommy and Billy were reincarnated post-House of M, they were given lives that, chronologically made them older than Wanda's sons had been). But hopefully, somewhere down the line, Marvel Studios and Disney will try to crank out even more money from the successful MCU. I would love love LOVE to see a Younge Avengers film (not TV show, because limited budgets are annoying). And I agree - Wiccan and Hulkling are everything 👍 But they first need to introduce thr Skrulls to the MCU (apparently that's happening in Captain Marvel) and they need to emphasize the enmity between the Kree and the Skrulls.
Hawkeye has already retired. Hopefully in a few years we'll see Kate Bishop take up the mantle. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. gave us Jeffrey Mace as the Patriot, so the mantle exists and we might see Eli Bradley take it up. And Cassie Lang already exists in the MCU, so here's hoping 😊

The guy that played Frank only had one tone throughout the show. He always looks like he’s contemplating something. Ironic that the guy who plays an actor is the weakest actor in the show.

I’m hoping they also give the show a bigger budget to realise the special effects. Namely old lace (cgi and animatronic) and karolinas powers

I have been a deanoru shipper back when the book first came out in '03 and always thought, in time, they'd be endgame. The arrival of Xavin bothered me because it felt like Karolina was guilted into the relationship because it was to keep peace between their races... Even though Karolina grew to have feelings for and cared for Xavin, it was never to the depth that she loved/loves Nico... In the comics, Nico cares a great deal for Karolina, the way she looks after her emergency bracelet and her reaction when Karolina returns speaks volumes. The end of vol 1 issue 18, Nico and Karolina are even holding hands. Did BKV intend them to be a couple, but Marvel said no, so when vol 2 started, he had to steer the ship a different direction? A lot has changed since 2003 and I suspect the comic would have handled that almost kiss and their relationship differently if it was published now and I think that's why the show is going in that direction. Also as far as the show goes, I definitely don't want Nico to be confused about her feelings for Karolina or "experimenting" that's some tropey shit that needs to die with the Bury Your Gays trope.
I just went back and read volumes 1-3. Karolina definitely had feelings for Nico, every time she’d see her with a guy she’d make some sarcastic comment. The relationship between those two definitely had the potential to turn into something more from the get-go but I’m guessing back in 2003 people still weren’t ready for a gay couple. In the new run with Xavin gone, Karolina and Nico start something after K breaks up with her girlfriend. I guess they want to be in line with the show.

Aadil Kelly I agree. It could just be the acting but Alex's character seemed genuinely distraught at losing the evidence.
Alex was the one to show them the sacrifice in the comics and the one to translate the book on the history of Gibborim so it’s not going to be surprising in the show if he betrayed them. Also from the beginning of the show they made it clear that he had a thing for Nico and it was later stated that he liked her since they were kids. Now that Nico and Karolina seem to have something going on that might push him to betray them.
Don’t make Alex turn on The Runaways
I totally agree with you I loved The Runaways as a book though I wish they keeped the Aztec gods though but it’s still a good adaptation of a good comic

Remember when Nico asks how Alex "actually" knew her moms passcode (the Gala). There are a lot of instances where Nico urges Alex but its always interrupted. I think that tells something 😮

Magic seems plausible, Molly being a mutant is a lost cause since they did the space rock thing. Alex/chase alterations is a maybe, or they might lead him up to be the mole.

will you also be checking out marvel cloak and dagger when it debuts later this year am looking forward to finally seeing a live action version of the duo plus they .are both street level heroes even doe it might not happen but it would be pretty interesting to see them not only meet the runaways in live action but also meeting the defenders as well also i got myself a copy of the runaways novelization over the weekend still reading it keep up the good work also are looking forward to the live action version of teen titans this year and young justice season 3

In some ways I think the parents being essentially "original" in the show is that the writers and actors aren't as restricted
I want to add that the show is based on the first 6 actually :) In 6 they get the message that they are blamed for the murder :)
I found Victor Stein character my favorite part of the show. He and Chase had an uncomfortable dynamic stemming from an abusive relationship. Alex and his father also have an inverse relationship which begins strong and errods over time.

Episode 7 when Victor recieves a message from a much older son and lives a day, granted on alien ecstacy, is an amazing exploration of a man who gets a perfect last day safe in the knowledge his legacy will be achieved.
Oh and Alex is useless...um it is called Guile, who gets the $$, keeps the whole thing under wraps for as long as possible or turns an enemy into a friend in a 5 minute convo. Who brings that to the table?
I felt like Molly was extremely annoying and more put in there for diversity's sake, but she is written as a complete mess-up and too young to understand. She felt more like a token character rather than an actual character to follow.
I loved the show, the only thing I want them to improve is the fighting scenes and choreography since the two fights were terrible to be truthful.

I kinda felt Alex got fucked over in this series, he was a great character but as Faust said he didn't really bring anything to the table and he dosen't really have an excuse for being there after he was dropped by Nico (I know that he's friends with the group but still). So I'm now also hoping he's the mole in Season 2 as this would justify his lacklustre skills of this season.
I totally agree about the show's changes to Chase's character. About the only thing that reassures me is that he doesn't seem to have very practical knowledge. His intelligence only seems to lie in that one area. I was fine with him being a jock. At first I didn't like it, but then it set the stage for him learning to become a better, compassionate human being because of seeing the horrible behavior of people around him. I think it'll end up being the catalyst for his emotional intelligence and wisdom later. I can't decide who is going to die this season. I'm calling Alex. He definitely wasn't given as strong a character in the show. I'm so going to cry when Gert dies. She's my favorite character.

I thought the show was good although I do think that the whole Nico and Karolina thing was so forced and maybe chase and gert too. I do also think that they might make Molly into a mutant since they haven’t really said where her powers are from, like they wanted the opportunity just in case.
I stopped watching the shows because of how it's filmed. Sometimes I can't tell if it is a flashback or if it's happening right now.
I just need to see possessed Tina eating cake again to make me sit through a whole 'nother season of this show. That's all I need! on a more series note. Eh. Was pretty good. gonna watch cloak and dagger next.
