    S. Repens was the first plant I ever got and it was the best. I think it looks amazing when it grows in! And I kept it in a small 5 gallon... I HIGHLY recommend it!

    I love the S. Repens! I have that in my nano tank, they really took well and grow like crazy. Mine are low and fat, but I'd love it if it were more dense. I love the the look of the fluffy bottom.

    Good video. I have E. Tenellus in my tank and, you're right, it's a aggressive carpet plant. It was supposed to be just the left front of the tank, but runners have gone everywhere. It's stayed fairly short, too, maybe an effect of having a Planted+ on just a 20-long, so fairly shallow. Substrate is eco-complete, btw.

    if dont have patience, dont do planted tanks. i know a lot of my friends too who are very crazy they thought planted tank will just turn into jungle in 1 month then they spent a lot on ferts and lights and substrate/soil but THEIR HANDS ALWAYS TEMPERING THE SCAPE eventually killing all and destroying their tanks. in the end im the luckiest guy cause i pickup all whats left behind from their tanks and i put it in my pond. hahaha..

    • @AQUAPROS

      +Rommel R ph 7.2 GH and KH are both 4

    • @cjday573
      @cjday573 7 лет назад

      Rommel R what exactly do you mean by happy? commercially available rummynose tetras have been bred to the point of tolerating a wide range of parameters except very alkaline water as it messes with their kidneys. If they aren't very red in the nose, you may be looking at a disease or parasites, high levels of something like nitrate or ammonia, or even just them being uncomfortable in the tank. Maybe not enough of the tetras for them to shoal effectively, or there could be a larger fish that is causing them to hide or become stressed. I recently got some danios, which are top swimmers, and my rummynose are much more outgoing and very aggressive feeders.

    • @HM-lk3pq
      @HM-lk3pq 7 лет назад +1

      chris day I meant that Mike's rummies noses are blood red and to me that's a sign of being happy. I have 6 rummies 3 zebras and 1 brilliant rasbora. For a while I've been having a problem with my own rummies noses not showing any red. Then one day I sunk 3 almond leaves and when the tannins released, the noses started turning red. My water is hard here, I think over 7.6. I got some seachem acid buffer and I've been dosing 1/4 teaspoon for 3 days now on my mr aqua 12gal long. It's still at 7.6. I have pool filter sand as my substrate and dragon stones and no plants yet. I'm even using organic peat inside my HOB. I don't wanna use the seachem long term. I don't wanna use RO because of the cost. What do you recommend I do?

    • @cjday573
      @cjday573 7 лет назад +2

      Rommel R based on your description, I'd say you either don't have enough fish, or the lack of plants is stressing them out due to there being minimal hiding places. If they got more red after the tannins leached from your almond leaves, its quite possible that the darkening of the water helped, or maybe the actual leaves being in the tank provided some sort of shelter for them. I personally keep my rummies in tap water with a PH of 8.4, so I don't think it's your parameters. Personally I would add more dither or top swimming fish if you could manage it, rummies sort of rely on top swimmers to signal that everything is okay in the open water, or in the absence of dither fish, large shoaling numbers create security.

    So, I recently started a small 5 gallon starter aqua scaping tank that eventually will hopefully be a feeder shrimp breeding tank. I have some hairgrass and some dwarf swords coming for it as well as some micro swords and water sprites. Hoping it goes well once the plants get established. Learning the "patience" part from my red eared terrapin hatchling whose constantly teaching me- and he's already learned the art of begging and that sometimes I am a sucker for those little begging eyes and the fact that he will keep staring at me as I am working on my computer. An off the subject question for you is, what species of shrimp in your opinion are colorful and easy to breed?

      Gravel can work depending on the plant. I can't help you much there, but other vids should.
      Water change frequency depends on a lot of variables like size of tank, number of fish, etc, but generally most advice I've seen says at least 20% change weekly for general purposes.

    I've avoided using carpet plants in my heavily planted tanks (see videos at "Jim's fish room updates...") thinking that food would fall into them and the fish wouldn't be able to get at that food. The dropped food would decay and foul up the tank water. Any opinions as to why my thinking isn't founded?

    • @Chaos_Draco
      @Chaos_Draco 5 лет назад

      You could trim down the carpets once in a while to make an "open space" near the middle and add the food there. It makes it a little more practical and visually a pleasing

    • @jimsfishroom1567
      @jimsfishroom1567 5 лет назад

      @@Chaos_Draco That's an interesting idea. But in feeding from the top, the food floats down all over the place, and if/when it falls into that non-open carpeted area, wouldn't the fish not be able to find/est it, and thus foul the trank?

    • @Chaos_Draco
      @Chaos_Draco 5 лет назад

      That's what bottom feeders/shrimps/ or some of those plants are there to do :)
      They will go through those carpets and find all of those pieces of food scattered about when they aren't in the center

      TheJibootyinfiresme hairgrass could be stubborn at times, what kind of substrate and fertiliser are you using? In my tank, hairgrass grow quite easily as long as I maintain the balance between the light, CO2 and fertiliser

      Andy Suryantoro van Ruzzette hi :) i used dosed, and tablet fertilizer, i have it in fine sand and just normal sand too.
      i had co2 till recently but i ran out ..
      but it was eith a high power light, with co2 for 2 months

      TheJibootyinfiresme if your light is high but there are not enough CO2 then you will have algae, is your tank also have algae? If not, then it's possible that you either you lack sufficient fertiliser or your sand is not suitable for the hairgrass

      Andy Suryantoro van Ruzzette i do get algae since the co2 ran out, in my other tanks i get minimal algae, just a bit on the glass.
      ive moved most of the hairgrass out of that tank for now, hopefully itll grow in the other tanks. Thanks for the advice :)

    Second attempt at growing HC or dwarf baby tears. I have a standard 10 gallon aqueon tank with ada amazonia and power sand special small, 20lbs co2 tank setup. Now all I need are lights. Finnex ray2, Finnex planted plus 24/7 SE, Finnex planted plus 24/7, Fluval 2.0 Pro, Current USA Satellite plus Pro. Help, they all seem awesome but I want one thats the best for the Dwarf baby tear. Thanks!!

    I just bought the first plant you were talking about, and it has started to yellow after the first day and the leaves continue to slowly die. I have the Coralife Aqualight Dual Linear Strip T5 Aquarium Lighting Fixture, 2X14 Watt, 24 inch for lighting. Would lighting be the problem??

    So, I'm thinking of growing plants in already established 55 gal tank with fish. Is this still possible? I mean I could take the fish out add nutrient rich soil, etc. And get this started without harming the fish? Because it seems I will need to take out the substrate thats in there right now. .... Just wanted to get an idea what Im in for, what kind of supplies I'll need. Any suggestions or tips or links would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for your time! Btw, I enjoyed your video and like the work and what your doing!

    I understood the importance of lighting. I have too powerful lighting (2x200 watt led floodlights) therefore my hygrophila difformis completely carpeted my aquarium. Normally it gets a very long plant

    Do you have a video for the proper method to clean a tank with soil? I have a gravel bottom with Amazon swords, which are fed by root tabs and vitamins I add to the water. They look great, but my ferns look tired. I would like to try soils, but I am afraid of ammonia buildup. Right now my tank is 4 years old and stable. Thanks!

      OldeOne deESuhrim ammonia shouldn’t build up with bio media. Though to run a no filter tank requires knowledge of that balance. Good book I’ve from FOO the Flowerjorn is, “Ecology of the Planted Tank”.

    In the second tank you showed, I noticed your S. Repen's leaves were drooping down, I have experienced the same problem. Is that due to too little light aswell?
