S. Repens was the first plant I ever got and it was the best. I think it looks amazing when it grows in! And I kept it in a small 5 gallon... I HIGHLY recommend it!
Chik Nuggets「тм」 ha! Yes honestly I am a control freak at heart but honestly my wife is of course in control for most things (avoiding fighting) my tank is my space 😎
I love the S. Repens! I have that in my nano tank, they really took well and grow like crazy. Mine are low and fat, but I'd love it if it were more dense. I love the the look of the fluffy bottom.
I know I'm totally late in the game, but Ive been watching your videos constantly and you've talked about your kiddy pool projects, but is there a video on how to do this? I feel like it will save me a lot of money growing plants out like this. Many thanks.
The patience point has been a hard lesson for me. But now that I’ve learned the discipline to space changes out by two weeks, things in my algae train wreck of a 55 are really starting to improve.
Good video. I have E. Tenellus in my tank and, you're right, it's a aggressive carpet plant. It was supposed to be just the left front of the tank, but runners have gone everywhere. It's stayed fairly short, too, maybe an effect of having a Planted+ on just a 20-long, so fairly shallow. Substrate is eco-complete, btw.
if dont have patience, dont do planted tanks. i know a lot of my friends too who are very crazy they thought planted tank will just turn into jungle in 1 month then they spent a lot on ferts and lights and substrate/soil but THEIR HANDS ALWAYS TEMPERING THE SCAPE eventually killing all and destroying their tanks. in the end im the luckiest guy cause i pickup all whats left behind from their tanks and i put it in my pond. hahaha..
I am so struggling with monti carlo I have co2 high lights ferts a good flow it seems to be slow to grow and i often find it comes away from the substrate. I use aqua soil love learning though this one's got me beat great video pal
Sagitaria is amazing, mine is starting to carpet in my mid light, no ferts, no Co2 plain sand and gravel tanks. It looks like small vallisneria. I have the bigger variaty
Hi I love your vids. I want to start using plants in my tanks, but I am not sure how to clean the tank once I have a planted tank. Please provide information about cleaning a tank with a few plants and a lot of plants. Thanks :)
so i sprinkled some seeds i bought from ebay onto gravel and they grew, but now i need to know how to get nerite snails from going underneath and making them come out of the gravel. tiny plants floating every where all the time :(
Thanks so much! Now when you say “good spectrum” how do I achieve that? I have the fluval led smart thingy lol I can set the sunrise, daylight, sunset and night. It has pink, blue, cold white, pure white and warm white adjustable colors. I have no idea what to set it on. Please let me know if you have any advice on that. Thanks!
Hi I got my self some Monty carlo for a carpet but mine are going in to melt down Since I put them In my tank they was very strong will they grow back I do put in co2 and plant food cheers happy fish keeping
Hey man! I really like your aquarium style. Could you do a video on one of your tanks and all of the parameters? Water: RO or Tap CO2 amount Fertilization Lighting: Type of lights and photo period Weekly Water change / maintenance schedule I think this would give a great idea of what it takes to get the results that you have! Have a great weekend!
Rommel R what exactly do you mean by happy? commercially available rummynose tetras have been bred to the point of tolerating a wide range of parameters except very alkaline water as it messes with their kidneys. If they aren't very red in the nose, you may be looking at a disease or parasites, high levels of something like nitrate or ammonia, or even just them being uncomfortable in the tank. Maybe not enough of the tetras for them to shoal effectively, or there could be a larger fish that is causing them to hide or become stressed. I recently got some danios, which are top swimmers, and my rummynose are much more outgoing and very aggressive feeders.
chris day I meant that Mike's rummies noses are blood red and to me that's a sign of being happy. I have 6 rummies 3 zebras and 1 brilliant rasbora. For a while I've been having a problem with my own rummies noses not showing any red. Then one day I sunk 3 almond leaves and when the tannins released, the noses started turning red. My water is hard here, I think over 7.6. I got some seachem acid buffer and I've been dosing 1/4 teaspoon for 3 days now on my mr aqua 12gal long. It's still at 7.6. I have pool filter sand as my substrate and dragon stones and no plants yet. I'm even using organic peat inside my HOB. I don't wanna use the seachem long term. I don't wanna use RO because of the cost. What do you recommend I do?
Rommel R based on your description, I'd say you either don't have enough fish, or the lack of plants is stressing them out due to there being minimal hiding places. If they got more red after the tannins leached from your almond leaves, its quite possible that the darkening of the water helped, or maybe the actual leaves being in the tank provided some sort of shelter for them. I personally keep my rummies in tap water with a PH of 8.4, so I don't think it's your parameters. Personally I would add more dither or top swimming fish if you could manage it, rummies sort of rely on top swimmers to signal that everything is okay in the open water, or in the absence of dither fish, large shoaling numbers create security.
I cant get my Repens to grow. They arent dying but they arent growing or spreading out at all. Im not sure what I am doing wrong :/ Yours looks so nice.
Where did you get the small size gravel used in these tanks? I'm looking for gravel that is basically large sand. Tiny, 2mm-3mm pieces. Yours is one of the closes things I've seen.
So thankful for the recommendations!!!! But a quick fish question, what’s the red faced tetras that’s in the tank with the neons? I️ want to say that they’re rummy noses but idk.
So, I recently started a small 5 gallon starter aqua scaping tank that eventually will hopefully be a feeder shrimp breeding tank. I have some hairgrass and some dwarf swords coming for it as well as some micro swords and water sprites. Hoping it goes well once the plants get established. Learning the "patience" part from my red eared terrapin hatchling whose constantly teaching me- and he's already learned the art of begging and that sometimes I am a sucker for those little begging eyes and the fact that he will keep staring at me as I am working on my computer. An off the subject question for you is, what species of shrimp in your opinion are colorful and easy to breed?
Tank looks awesome! I am working on my S. reopens carpet right now as well. What is that cool looking crinkly leaf plant on the right front next to your s. Repens at 6:26. The one that is short and seems to fan out?
Thread might be dead but, what is a good substrate you'd recommend? I have a tank with gravel and silk plants and pretty unhappy with them. Without replacing the gravel entirely, would growing patches of any of the plants be a good idea?
I have had success in growing in gravel. Root tabs are your friend. If you decide to break it down, a good organic soil substrate with gravel or (better yet) sand is great.
Hey thanks for the vid! I have a 50 gallon hi tech planted tank, and have been slowly converting my 10 gallon to plants. Within the last week i have planted dwarf hair grass as a carpeting plant. I am also using the 24/7 finnex planted LED light, so my question is how happy are you with the light in regards to plants? I've never used LED before and was wondering long term your thoughts. Since i have it on a 10 gallon its quite a bit shallower than a 90 gallon. Thanks in advance :) Also do you use the 24/7 settings or do you use it on a separate timer?
Gravel can work depending on the plant. I can't help you much there, but other vids should. Water change frequency depends on a lot of variables like size of tank, number of fish, etc, but generally most advice I've seen says at least 20% change weekly for general purposes. Hope your tank is going well!
any tips for dwarf hair grass? I got some a while back and no matter how deep I buried them they always floated to the surface, eventually some dead strands started clogging the filter. how can I get it to spread and stay down?
I've avoided using carpet plants in my heavily planted tanks (see videos at "Jim's fish room updates...") thinking that food would fall into them and the fish wouldn't be able to get at that food. The dropped food would decay and foul up the tank water. Any opinions as to why my thinking isn't founded?
You could trim down the carpets once in a while to make an "open space" near the middle and add the food there. It makes it a little more practical and visually a pleasing
@@Chaos_Draco That's an interesting idea. But in feeding from the top, the food floats down all over the place, and if/when it falls into that non-open carpeted area, wouldn't the fish not be able to find/est it, and thus foul the trank?
That's what bottom feeders/shrimps/ or some of those plants are there to do :) They will go through those carpets and find all of those pieces of food scattered about when they aren't in the center
I want a planted tank for my kuhlie loach tank but I'm worried that if I use rocks or gravel they will get hurt, should I use gravel and sand? Or just have a lot of carpet plants for them to hide in?
Monte carlo is a very good carpet plant for beginners. No CO2, just a basic plant light and it makes a great low grow carpet plant. It is slow growing but worth the wait!
thank you so much for this video!!!! i was trying hairgrass and it wasnt working, so i was looking for other carpets but i just couldnt find the right ones. i brought a high power light so itd carpet, but that just caused it too go brown and not grow one bit
TheJibootyinfiresme hairgrass could be stubborn at times, what kind of substrate and fertiliser are you using? In my tank, hairgrass grow quite easily as long as I maintain the balance between the light, CO2 and fertiliser
Andy Suryantoro van Ruzzette hi :) i used dosed, and tablet fertilizer, i have it in fine sand and just normal sand too. i had co2 till recently but i ran out .. but it was eith a high power light, with co2 for 2 months
TheJibootyinfiresme if your light is high but there are not enough CO2 then you will have algae, is your tank also have algae? If not, then it's possible that you either you lack sufficient fertiliser or your sand is not suitable for the hairgrass
Andy Suryantoro van Ruzzette i do get algae since the co2 ran out, in my other tanks i get minimal algae, just a bit on the glass. ive moved most of the hairgrass out of that tank for now, hopefully itll grow in the other tanks. Thanks for the advice :)
Second attempt at growing HC or dwarf baby tears. I have a standard 10 gallon aqueon tank with ada amazonia and power sand special small, 20lbs co2 tank setup. Now all I need are lights. Finnex ray2, Finnex planted plus 24/7 SE, Finnex planted plus 24/7, Fluval 2.0 Pro, Current USA Satellite plus Pro. Help, they all seem awesome but I want one thats the best for the Dwarf baby tear. Thanks!!
I just bought the first plant you were talking about, and it has started to yellow after the first day and the leaves continue to slowly die. I have the Coralife Aqualight Dual Linear Strip T5 Aquarium Lighting Fixture, 2X14 Watt, 24 inch for lighting. Would lighting be the problem??
So, I'm thinking of growing plants in already established 55 gal tank with fish. Is this still possible? I mean I could take the fish out add nutrient rich soil, etc. And get this started without harming the fish? Because it seems I will need to take out the substrate thats in there right now. .... Just wanted to get an idea what Im in for, what kind of supplies I'll need. Any suggestions or tips or links would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for your time! Btw, I enjoyed your video and like the work and what your doing!
I understood the importance of lighting. I have too powerful lighting (2x200 watt led floodlights) therefore my hygrophila difformis completely carpeted my aquarium. Normally it gets a very long plant
My carpet plants are SO tall. Leggy as heck, wanted short plush carpet..they’re growing great but not what I ordered lol..they’re pink. They’re pretty but so tall. Not sure how it’ll all turn out.
I have java moss and i wanna make carpet..so could you please help me on what substance /material i should tie my java moss before keepin it in aquarium
Do you have a video for the proper method to clean a tank with soil? I have a gravel bottom with Amazon swords, which are fed by root tabs and vitamins I add to the water. They look great, but my ferns look tired. I would like to try soils, but I am afraid of ammonia buildup. Right now my tank is 4 years old and stable. Thanks!
OldeOne deESuhrim ammonia shouldn’t build up with bio media. Though to run a no filter tank requires knowledge of that balance. Good book I’ve from FOO the Flowerjorn is, “Ecology of the Planted Tank”.
In the second tank you showed, I noticed your S. Repen's leaves were drooping down, I have experienced the same problem. Is that due to too little light aswell?
S. Repens was the first plant I ever got and it was the best. I think it looks amazing when it grows in! And I kept it in a small 5 gallon... I HIGHLY recommend it!
how come I don't care about plants unless they are underwater?
Thisisnotmyrealname8 easier to tinker with and grow?
Chik Nuggets「тм」 ha! Yes honestly I am a control freak at heart but honestly my wife is of course in control for most things (avoiding fighting) my tank is my space 😎
Same
Wow... I was think that the other day
because if its not underwater, its not aquascaping, & there is another whole hobby on that
Wow. I've been searching for a good video for carpeting plants and this is the best video yet. Easy to follow, not boring and very informative.
Three Plants mentioned in the video are
1. Dwarf Sag - 1:43
2. Dwarf Chain Swords - 3:27
3. S. repens - 4:56
I love the S. Repens! I have that in my nano tank, they really took well and grow like crazy. Mine are low and fat, but I'd love it if it were more dense. I love the the look of the fluffy bottom.

great tips mate, the last tip is the most important i believe
I gotta get that archerfish man, I love it.
Patience? Excuse me? What's that?

You have to wait or see or study
I thought patients were what doctors have ?
😞 oh , lol
Good video Mike. Lots of info. I'm going to try a planted tank for the first time in many years of fish keeping.
super helpful video! thanks for the upload 🐠🐠🐠

Great tips Mike!
when the carpet is thick like the repens, do you still gravel vac it or does the plant use up the waste/dirt?
+Pa. Fish Preacher I still siphon it, lots of waste gets trapped in it
AQUAPROS how do you do that? do you lift up the reopens before vac or just stick the vac through the plants?
so i sprinkled some seeds i bought from ebay onto gravel and they grew, but now i need to know how to get nerite snails from going underneath and making them come out of the gravel. tiny plants floating every where all the time :(
Don't blame your snail. Those eBay seed suck. They uproot them self over time.
Thanks so much! Now when you say “good spectrum” how do I achieve that?
I have the fluval led smart thingy lol
I can set the sunrise, daylight, sunset and night. It has pink, blue, cold white, pure white and warm white adjustable colors. I have no idea what to set it on. Please let me know if you have any advice on that. Thanks!
Did you figure it out? Same tank bout to arrive at my door tomorrow
I know the Fluval Aquasky has a plant setting you can choose
I absolutely love this guy
Alot of good info on this video alway watch to the end. Thanks

AQUAPROS tank u get it lol no but really thanks

I love how his fish follow him around
Beautiful tank mate, wow your rum ya are so red.....beautiful! Also what’s your gravel/substrate?
I love it! How do you keep your rummies happy? Ph? Gh? Kh? I'm having trouble with mines.

good video Mike definitely took some notes thank you and tanks looking awesome BTW
I grew glossostigma from seeds… grew in great and looks amazing. Only problem is the roots are not holding and fish are pulling it up in bunches
Can I put carpet in my planted puffer tank? I followed your planted tank setup and I'm loving it.
For me it's always been cuba. Grow it like crazy with no CO2 or ferts. It is easy to grow, as long as you don't have fish that dig it up.
Beautiful tank mate
excellent vid, good job
How do you clean your gravel with a lot of plants, especially carpet plants ?
I cant get my Repens to grow. They arent dying but they arent growing or spreading out at all. Im not sure what I am doing wrong :/ Yours looks so nice.
+Gabriel Q Thanks! I vaccuum it a lot lol
Gabriel Q use a good substrate you know , what substrate you using ATM ?
Try using fertilizers and CO2 if it's not growing
Cheers for the recommendations.🤙
Hey, how would you recommend I use aquarium plant seeds in a aquarium that's already full of fish and water! ?
Mel_j_ley drop the seeds after removing some substrate. Sprinkle with lights off then put back removed sand. That simple
Is there a video of this tank, curious of the fish stock?
I like that some of these are BIG Tank 'carpets'... as my 55 is of course also 21 inches deep.
should we seed it or buy it in bunches?
you cant seed aquariumplants, there are not aquariumplants that have seeds
@@asianarowana9780 ya they're everywhere just Google it you can buy seeds just like any plant
Where did you get the small size gravel used in these tanks? I'm looking for gravel that is basically large sand. Tiny, 2mm-3mm pieces. Yours is one of the closes things I've seen.
Super informative video! Loved it! Miss my 720 Liters aquarium. Gonna get myself a 1000 Liters one when I move from my apartment into a house ;)
So thankful for the recommendations!!!! But a quick fish question, what’s the red faced tetras that’s in the tank with the neons? I️ want to say that they’re rummy noses but idk.
I like your honesty both on the video and in the comments below. Super👌🏻
+Zak Rafik appreciate it zak! Thank for watching as always man :)

Do you think I can grow dwarf sag with co2,fluorite gravel mixed with fluval stratum and a 6w led in my 3 gal?
Great tanks..thanks for sharing...what is the name of the bushy groundcover plant in 13:24...is it blixen?
What is that really short grassy stuff in front of your S. repens?
+Michelle Mantonya dwarf hairgrass!
Do you trim it to be that short? It looks really cool!
In the second tank you showed, I noticed your S. Repen's leaves were drooping down, I have experienced the same problem. Is that due to too little light aswell?
