CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The pirate, Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro), treats his prisoners unconventionally.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A charmingly naïve boy from the English village of Wall travels to a magical, mythical world in search of the falling star that will help him win the heart of his true love in this fantasy adventure starring Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ricky Gervais, and Sienna Miller. For hundreds of years the massive cobblestone barrier that surrounds the sleepy English hamlet of Wall has kept the citizens of the village safe and secure from the malevolent supernatural forces that stir just outside its perimeter. When dashing Tristan Thorne (Cox) promises the fairest girl in the village, Victoria (Miller), that he will prove his love by bestowing her with a genuine falling star, his daring mission sends him on an adventure far outside the comfortable confines of Wall. In order to find the fallen star, Tristan will have to ascend the wall and venture deep into the forbidden heart of the fantastical realm known as Stormhold. Upon discovering that the meteorite he sought was in fact a beautiful girl named Yvaine (Danes), who has stumbled though space and is now being pursued by the King of Stormhold's (Peter O'Toole) sons (who long to use her cosmic powers to lay claim to the throne), Tristan vows to protect the otherworldly visitor at all costs. But the king's sons aren't the only ones in search of the luminous Yvaine; fearsome witch Lamia (Pfeiffer) has become convinced that the young girl's power can help her to achieve eternal youth and beauty. As Tristan makes his way through Stormhold on a mission to bring the star back to Wall, he will encounter a series of spectacular characters and creatures that will lead him to a fate he never imagined. Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughn serves as director and co-screenwriter for this tale of witches and pirates adapted from the novel by fantasy icon Neil Gaiman, who also produces.

I just love how his crew... or at least his first mate... knew how camp he was and just played along with his macho act he'd put on for them lol
But one of them later on told Captain Shakespeare, “We always knew you were a whoopsie” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
what's sad is this movie is pretty underrated and stores do not sell them anymore, I freaking love it, Romance, drama, action, adventure, everything in one film, the book is good to.
Yup, the Princess Bride of our generation
Netflix?
My wife and I love this movie.
7 years later you can now watch them on Netflix and even buy or rent it on RUclips
WAIT THERE'S A BOOK!?!
The crew ran to the deck so they could let the captain see their reaction, and make him think he was getting away with it 😂 love it
I love that they actually made Captain Shakespeare an actual part of the story. In the book their time on the ship is summed up in a throwaway line.
Really so how does he get good with a sword?
@@Warcodered01 he doesn’t. theres no real final battle. The book kind of just peters out.
@@Doc-Holliday1851 “peters out?”
As I heard it, DeNero was so good as Captain Shakespeare, the director expanded the character to what you see in the film and created this criminally underrated tale.
@@SolaceHuntsman The better to twinkle on your toes.
“Have you tried getting blood out of a silk shirt? Nightmare!”
It’s about as funny as “Honey-you’re wearing a bathrobe.”
He's just hilarious
It’s all right cap’n, we always knew you was a whoopsie
I genuinely enjoyed this film. Bought it from a bin at Walmart. Never regretted my decision. Underrated film seriously
larnizzo91 “from a bin” now that’s just sad. Walmart is hell. How they do that to a Neil Gaiman story?
The movie really was a joy somthing totally out of left field and yet truly enjoyable
My wife and I saw this in the theater when it came out. We were out for a drive, thought a movie sounded like fun but nothing was showing we were interested in so we decided to see this. It's been one of our favorites ever since. It's a lot like the princess Bride in the whimsy, weird and entertaining way.
Such a good movie. Rented it from a Redbox all because of the name. My nickname from my boss was stardust and so when I saw the title I rented it without reading the summary. First time I've ever watched a movie workout knowing what it was about. Don't regret it
It was one the first movies I saw when my family got cable and I recorded on a VHS tape and watch it many times over I loved it so much.
Best line ever “Captain’s busy; so should you be!”
"Anyone who disturbs me for the next few hours will get the same treatment". "you mean you'll...."
@Joe Owens first mate, most likely
Agreed, and so casually flawless
That guy was lowkey one of the best characters in the movie.
real big time to lean time to clean energy
This film is far, far, far too good to be classed as a kid's film. . . Don't tell me I'm too old to watch it! I love this film.
Do not show it to boys with many brothers. They may get some nasty ideas.
this is not a kids film. I watched it when I was wayyy to young and I was terrified of the DVD in my shelf
@@acesuomi I mean the witches scared me so much too!
This is not a kids film, definitely not. It's based on a book by neil gaiman and while he does write children books, this, as well as other stories, is definitely an adult book.
"When we're done your own mother won't recognise you."
...Who's gonna tell him?
Funny thing is she does recognise him 😂
I watched it because people kept giving it favorable comparisons to Princess Bride. They were right. One of the most underrated movies of the last 20 years.
Amazon was selling the 2 movies as a bundle for $10 (CAD) I squealed like a little girl and hit buy without hesitation. I saw this during pre-release, my ex won tickets. Every time I've seen it anywhere I've watched it... I'm so glad I'll finally have my own copy to watch.
"anyone who disturbs me for the next few hours will get the same treatment."
"What? You'll....?"
"No you idiot I'll throw you off the side as well."
I imagine he was slightly disappointed.
@@ephemispriest8069 It's made funnier when it's revealed later they all know what he's about and his tough guy act wasn't fooling anyone.
I loved that line. Their romance was understated yet adorable 🥰
"Captain's busy. So should you be."
This is possibly the greatest role Robert De Niro ever played. And he absolutely kills it. The haircut kills me every single time.
Anyone else get muted Robin Williams vibes from this?
Now that you mention it just a bit.
Sooo much!! 🥺
OMG I can see it!
I was thinking that before I even saw this comment.
I probably would if I knew what that was 😂
Man, I love Stardust.
It is one of my favourite underrated movies.
It’s such a fun film to watch
My god I can't stop watching this clip, De Niro is just to adorable here!!!
"Honey, you're wearing a bath robe." LOL you know he had to do it to 'em. Love this movie.
I just love the way she looks down at her clothes like "what?"
"Ever try to get bloodstains out of a silk shirt? Nightmare!" The smile he pulls gets me every time!!
That this fictional universe was never expanded upon with five sequels, two video games, a graphic novel, and HBO spin-off mini-series is a crime against nature.
Well, there was only one book. And Neil Gaiman intended it to be a stand-alone story. So.....
I missed the word "never" on first read through and got very excited for a moment.
trueeee
Yes, those were simpler times... When not every intellectual property had to be milked dry. When a film could just be a film.
True but at the same time I'm glad they just left it as it is. It's perfect now, we don't want all these money munching companies to get their hands on it and ruin a wonderful movie by creating terrible woke sequels were yvaine has a dream to be a businesswoman and it becomes a musical with terrible pop culture references thrown in randomly.
My god, that's Daredevil. And I'm betting that accent isn't fake.
Hello my old friend
And that is Will Grahams wife. Does this mean that this movie is just a crossover between different genres?
lol yeah he's English
I litually see your comments everywhere 😂
His dad is Jigsaw.
DeNiro does gay oh so well. Just shows his acting talents.
yeah... acting... haha
Natural talents
Really? I always thought the captain was just flamboyant
Mister Hamlicrazy123 flamboyant is one thing, but petticoats and a pink silk dress?
Definitely another. 😉
He is a method actor.
I still remember my mom surprising me for my birthday, and ran off to see this movie. We got a large popcorn, two large drinks, and settled in to a nearly-empty theatre, on the opening weekend for this movie. We didn't even go to an early showing, this was like a 7PM showing, and when we got out, we were rolling with laughter and talking about favorite characters, lines, etc., and both of us talked about hoping there would be a movie about Captain Shakespeare, or maybe a prequel with him. I'd read the book it's based off of, though I have to say I prefer the movie (mostly cause of Shakespeare and Michelle P.)
Aaaaaand thts why he is such a damn good actor. He can play any character. Genius! One of the greats.
The greatest.
Robert De Niro is so incredibly, incandescently FABULOUS in this movie!!!
Who knew you could be utterly FLAMING and yet a complete badass at the same time??
LOL XD
Well his dad was a whoopsie.....
When people say De Niro only plays the same characters. You should show them this movie. I love the guy such a good actor seems like he is just having fun with it!
De Niro plays the same ? Lol.
He’s probably the greatest actor ever
Lmao the people who say De Niro isn't a good actor are contrarians. Whenever I see De Niro play anything I know his acting isn't going to disappoint.
They need to release this movie in Theatres again..as many are not aware of this great movie
It is nice fun movie...
DeNIro was so totally awesome in this movie!
Your own mother won't recognise you... Well she does.
Glad everyone else here thinks this is underrated. I stumbled about this movie on TV by chance, noticed the girl from Homeland and decided to ‘watch a few minutes’, ended up watching till the end.
matt murdock in another universe
Sadly underrated movie. Probably DeNiro's best work of that decade.
Literally, I want to know what Robert de Niro thought when he first read his character summary. 😂
Absolutely
He clearly enjoyed himself enormously.
Visited some friends of mine from my previous college. One of them mentioned how she loved this movie and had it on DVD. We watched it while I was visiting and admit that it's really damn good. Some parts have aged poorly (mainly special effects-wise) but it's definitely underrated
I first saw this film when a classmate used it as a background while we are having our group project. It was about 3/4 of the movie when we realize it was a great movie. To this day still one of my favorite.
Daredevil, Juliet, and The Taxi Driver
I LOVE this movie. De niro is just the cherry on top
Honestly, I can’t think of one person I know that’s seen this movie and doesn’t like it. It’s not a perfect film, but it’s so much fun you can’t help but enjoy yourself. One of my personal favorites from when I was a kid
What a multi talented actor .. De Niro is a Living legend
Its a tragedy how underated this movie is. It used to be one of my favourites but I forgot about it for a while.
This movie is a masterpiece.
It's like Blackbeard, a reputation as a bad and dangerous man but never harmed anyone. But Captain Shakespeare adorable❤️
DeNiro has never been so whimsical before, i love him so much in this movie
Just realized DeNiro's character is reverse of what Stellan Skarsgard is doing on Andor :D
I love his name. You know.."Shakes-Spear" 🤣🤣🤣
This movie is incredibly underrated
Omg, my favorite character. He is great captain and brilliant actor
When the first mate said “what you’ll…” letting it slip that he knew the Captain preferred men to women. Lol. I love it.
One of the many reasons that Robert De Niro is one the best ever actors.
"captain'a busy so should you be." one of my favorite lines
Okay but can we just talk about the line about getting blood stains out of a silk shirt? Because I feel like that accidentally implies he *has* killed people before and just doesn't like doing it.
How can Matt see
Yeah..he isn't blind
“Honey, you’re wearing a bathrobe”
Such a great actor.
One of the best Roles Deniro has ever played!
ahahah, brilliant xD absolutely brilliant
Best and funniest part of the film, loved it.
I thought he was a flying pirate, or was that "flaming" pirate?!
It takes great acting for Deniro to do this, wow
When you’re performance and intimidation are off the scale!
This is called continuously rolling nat 20s with a high CHA score.
De niro in this was brilliant
I just realized that the actor of Tristan is the man without fear/ the Devil of Hell's Kitchen ( aka Daredevil)
Such a criminally underrated movie.
I love this part of the movie!! and Claire Danes is so beautiful!
This character is so amazing!
stardust was the best movie because they cast ricky gervais and basically told him to shut up.
I saw this movie years ago and I still love it so much
honey, you'er wearing a bathrobe,fav
The "your own mother wouldn't recognise you" line is kind of amusing on rewatch.
Despite 18 years apart, last seen as a baby, she recognises him instantly.
So Matthew Cox used to be an A-list actor and now turns into a TV actor ?
Will Smithsucks *Charie Cox
BTW, he ended up on the greatest product of the MCU.
The actor who plays supermen is also in this movie
I don't think he was ever A-list tbh, plus there's less of a distinction between "TV actors" and "film actors" now. Just look at Benedict Cumberbatch - he's in every bloody movie, yet still does plenty of TV. If anything, I'd say TV is where the really interesting, compelling stories are at now.
In case you didnt notice: there arent that many "steadily paid movie actors" ... and TV gives you a regular income.
Has he even done many movies? I think not. This and Theory of Everything are the only movies I can think of But he's been in a lot of great tv shows.... Daredevil, Boardwalk Empire and Downtown Abbey.
How did he not get an Oscar for this?
thats charlie cox im dead
This is my absolute favorite movie ever
Excellent method actor
I adore his first mate so very much!!
The best pirate ever
I just love this film!
Yup it's very very nice movie...
Robert De Niro is so good in this film!
Deniro channeled his father
Well if it isn't the blind lawyer from the Hell's Kitchen
@Bhendi9 You Mean DareDevil
what i wanna know is, how did he get there?
Afarkas Rashka on the ship?
He probably meant from the brig? where they were held to the Captain's Quarters and tbh I've been wondering the same
Secret compartments, perhaps?
Gawd Robert De Nero such a good actor
Robert DeNiros best role
My God I forgot about this I loved the man
Love this movie
This movie is so under rated film. Its a modern day princess bride and ghe closest thing to it for a new generation
Dexter Fletcher at 0:41-0:48
Matthew Murdock after The Defenders series final
It’s ok Captain we always knew you were a whoopsie! You’ll always be our captain captain
The perfect ingredients for a good reputation!
this movie is way more better than the book
Stars... Are stars... In a sky .... That's all
Anyone else remember that Henry Cavill was in this film too?
Yep. As was Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian, Billy Russo/Jigsaw in Netflix's Punisher).
Ahahahhahaha yes~ somehow his acting was so stiff here🤣 myb its the character (?) 🤷♀️
Who was Henry Cavill's character?
@@juliamazonidasilvapereira4327 He's Victoria's fiance-the one who gives Captain Shakespeare the eye near the end.😉
@@elenachristian9860 Thanks!
In high school we did a marching band halftime show based on this movie
I don't think I can bear to read the book if the captain isn't in it XD
...Is that Daredevil in his longjohns?
unrelated but i just remember that in this movie daredevil and superman fight over a girl
don't forget billy russo being daredevil's dad...
@@bungakrst oh yeah you're right
Shake Spear!!
Is there a New York in fairy land? Lol
When I first saw this movie, I thought it was a decent fantasy film then this scene came up. I could not see De Niro acting effeminate, as he was always the tough, brooding type. It put me off for the rest of the movie. Lately, looking back I realize that it wasn't that bad, in fact, I don't think anyone else could have nailed the role of Shakespeare as he did.
It’s funny since his mother did recognise him.
Matt murdock early years
If you do that scene, fatality.
